An eleven-month-old long-haired German pointer with a cyst on the medial side of the left lung is described. The content was a mucous liquid in a quantity of 400 ml. The cyst was the cause of a heavy dyspnoca. After removal of the cyst, the animal improved quickly. The origin of the cyst could not be determined definitely probably it was a congenital bronchogenic cyst.

BACKGROUND: To identify and estimate the prevalence of mediastinal cysts lined by the epithelium expressing steroid receptors.
METHODS: We retrieved 19 mediastinal cysts from our pathology files from 1996 to 2004, and examined estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) expressions in the cysts.
RESULTS: Three paravertebral cysts, all in women, one bronchogenic cyst in a woman, nine thymic cysts, and six pericardial cysts were found in the pathology files. Paravertebral cysts were situated in the posterior mediastinum and were attached either to the left or the right of the vertebr…

We present the case of a 52-year-old male who underwent thoracotomy for resection of a suspected bronchogenic cyst in the right posterior mediastinum. The size of the tumor had increased over years, according to repeated X-rays, and the cyst became symptomatic with obstruction of the right subclavian and jugular veins. To our surprise, histopathology revealed a hydatid cyst.

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is an established, minimally invasive modality for evaluating m … ell-defined cystic lesion in the right posterior mediastinum, with differential diagnoses including bronchogenic cyst, duplication cyst and necrotic lymphadenopathy. Given diagnostic uncertainty and the risks of primary surgical intervention, EUS-B-FNA was performed via transoesophageal approach under general anaesthesia. Cytological analysis revealed cyst macropha …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Foregut mediastinal cysts are rare congenital anomalies arising from aberrant embryonic foregut development, with … d management strategies encompassing surgical resection and observation.
KEY CONTENT AND FINDINGS: Bronchogenic cysts, the most common subtype (50-60%), typically occur near the carina, while esophageal duplication and neurenteric cysts are often posterior. Imaging, particularly computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is critical for diagnos …

BACKGROUND: Congenital cystic malformations of the lung often go unrecognized in childhood. It is controversial whether surgical management … outcomes. Univariate analysis revealed pneumonia, complex cysts, male sex, left-sided lesions, and bronchogenic cysts as predictors of a concomitant pulmonary resection being necessary during removal of the lesions. In a multivariable model, pneumonia and bronchogenic cysts persisted as predictors of the need for a more extensive pulmonary resection.
CONCLUSIONS: …

Background: About a fifth of all mediastinal masses are primary cysts arising in the absence of other underlying pathology. Bronchogenic cysts, although rare, are the most frequent type responsible for lower airways compression as they often develop in the peripheral branches of the tracheobronchial tree. Case presentation: We report the case of a 6-months-old child admitted for acute respiratory distress and wheezing not responsive to asthma treatment. Digestive and airway endoscopy proved a mild and a marked reduction of the esophageal and tracheal lumen, respectively. The nocturnal polygrap…

INTRODUCTION: An acute viral pericarditis may reveal a congenital pericardial abnormality.
CASE HISTORY: We report the case of a young man of 29 years in whom the development of rapidly progressive dyspnoea and fever led to the echocardiographic diagnosis of a pericardial tumour. The thoracic CT scan showed a mass arising in the superior mediastinum with no evidence of spread. Surgical exploration allowed the excision of a soft mutilobular mass adherent only to the aorta. Histological examination revealed an intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst.
CONCLUSION: After a review of bronchogenic cysts…

The retrotracheal triangle is an area in the posterior superior mediastinum where abnormal structures may be detected in as many as 2% of ch … ts, foreign bodies, diverticula, and achalasia), and miscellaneous entities (intrathoracic thyroid, bronchogenic cyst, bronchogenic carcinoma, cystic hygroma, and emphysema). Careful attention to this long-neglected area on chest radiographs can yield findings of abnormalities not otherwise suspected.

Mediastinal cysts of foregut origin represent an important diagnostic group. Classified according to their anomalous embryonic origins, they include bronchogenic, esophageal, enteric, and nonspecific cysts. A series of 20 consecutive surgically treated cases from the thoracic surgical service of a large medical center is reported, all successfully resolved without mortality. Described are 12 bronchogenic, four enterogenous, and four nonspecific cysts, occurring in a variety of thoracic locations. Close attention to symptomatology reveals a wide range of manifestations, from total absence of sy

The authors present a case report on a 60-year-old female patient suffering from benign mediastinal cyst, arterial hypertension and porphyria. CT-guided transparietal fine-needle punction was done simultaneously as a diagnostic and a therapeutic procedure. Partial regression of the cyst was still apparent at the check CT investigation after six months. The examination of the level of immunoglobulins in the fluid obtained during transparietal punction confirms the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst.

Intracardiac cystic lesions are rare. Hydatid disease, blood cysts and bronchogenic cysts in various chambers of the heart have been reported. Right atrial thrombus presenting as a cystic lesion on echocardiogram has not been reported. We describe a patient with mitral regurgitation in atrial fibrillation with a right atrial cyst, which was found to be a cavitating thrombus.

Lesions of the thoracic inlet present a significant challenge to the surgeon due to the difficulty of access and proximity to important neurovascular structures within the region. We describe two cases of benign disease of the thoracic inlet in children, one bronchogenic cyst and an esophageal duplication, and report the cervical approach used to manage them. Both lesions extended from the neck through the thoracic inlet, but demonstrate how benign lesions in this area can be delivered up into a cervical incision, negating the need for the more invasive modified thoracotomies. A cervical appro…
