Ultrasound machines with 7.5 to 5.0MHz linear transducers are well suited for rapid and straightforward differentiation of soft tissue swelling in the musculoskeletal system of cattle; in proximal limb regions 3.5MHz convex scanners allow better imaging. The main indications for ultrasonography of the musculoskeletal system in cattle are suspected arthritis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, abscesses, haematomas, diagnosis of muscle and tendon lesions, and generally the evaluation of soft tissue swellings everywhere that cannot be diagnosed based on clinical examination. The examiner starts by obtaini…

Carpet layers comprise less than 0.06% of the United States workforce yet they submit 6.2% of compensation claims for traumatic knee inflamm … validate the questionnaire responses. Compared with the MWBL, carpet layers reported more frequent bursitis (20% v 6%), needle aspiration of knee fluid (32% v 6%), and skin infections of the knee (7% v 2%). A score indicating frequency of using the knee kicker was the only statistically significant predictor of bursitis, whereas the score for kneeling was …

A healthy Danish man presented with infected prepatellar bursitis 8 months after being involved in a car accident in Malaysia resulting in exposure of a laceration of his knee to stagnant water. Tissue samples grew Burkholderia pseudomallei and diagnostic work up revealed no secondary foci. The patient was successfully treated with surgical debridement and 3 months of oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. At 6 months follow-up the patient was without relapse.

Review of referrals to our unit over the last 7 years showed that of approximately 750 cases referred as soft-tissue tumours, 132 were subsequently diagnosed as non-neoplastic lesions. The imaging characteristics of these lesions are presented to differentiate them from neoplasms. The most common diagnoses were myositis ossificans, ganglion cyst, abscess/infection, bursitis and synovitis. The imaging features of other rarer conditions will also be discussed.

Transarterial embolization (TAE) is a minimally invasive option for adhesive capsulitis (AC) refractory to conventional therapy. By targeting the underlying inflammatory process through reduction of neo-angiogenesis and nerve stimulation, TAE aims to achieve meaningful pain relief. Early studies report promising outcomes, although available data remain heterogeneous in technique and assessment. This review provides recommendations for performing adhesive capsulitis embolization (ACE) to promote standardized practice and support consistent methodology in future research. Reports of Baastrup disease have been underrepresented in the medical literature. Therefore, the current comprehensive review was performed by searching standard search engines using the terms "Baastrup's," "disease," "lumbar," "interspinous bursitis," and "kissing spine disease." Baastrup disease appears to be more common than once believed. Baastrup disease is associated with other degenerative disease processes of the spine that could potentially lead a physician to perform unnecessary surgery. Appreciation of this disease and identification on imaging can improve diagnosis and appropriate …

Periarthritis scapulohumeralis, also known as frozen shoulder, is a common disease in which the patient has a painful and restricted range of active and passive shoulder motion involving capsular contraction with no identifiable cause. Pathogenesis is thought to be a progression of inflammation and fibrosis of the capsule. Appropriate physical examination and radiologic studies can help in differentiating this condition from rotator cuff tear and other diseases. The natural progression of a frozen shoulder includes three phases (freezing, frozen and thawing) over a duration of 1 to 3.5 years a

INTRODUCTION: There has been an emergence of evidence in the area of frozen shoulder (FS) within the past decade related to risk factors, etiology, diagnosis, and management. It has become increasingly challenging for clinicians and researchers to stay up to date in these areas, particularly with the clinical practice guidelines that are available being few and outdated. To this end, the aim of this study was to produce an international consensus on the risk factors, etiology, diagnosis and management for individuals with FS.
METHODS: During phase one a steering committee was formed in order

Frozen shoulder is a common debilitating disorder characterized by shoulder pain and progressive loss of shoulder movement. Frozen shoulder is frequently associated with other systemic conditions or occurs following periods of immobilization, and has a protracted clinical course, which can be frustrating for patients as well as health-care professionals. Frozen shoulder is characterized by fibroproliferative tissue fibrosis, whereby fibroblasts, producing predominantly type I and type III collagen, transform into myofibroblasts (a smooth muscle phenotype), which is accompanied by inflammation,

Increased patellar uptake on bone scans is seen quite commonly but the possible or probable etiologies of this finding have not been previously well described. A review of 100 consecutive bone scans showed that the incidence of bilateral "hot" patellae is 15%. Identified etiologies include osteoarthritic degenerative disease (35%), fracture, possible metastatic disease, bursitis, Paget's disease, and osteomyelitis. The value of careful history, physical examination, and radiographs is stressed.

The immune mediated pathologic effects of rheumatoid arthritis on osteoarticular tissues are well delineated in the orthopaedic and medical literature. Less well explored are the extraosseous manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis. The rheumatoid disease process can affect virtually any organ system or tissue in the human body; from scleritis, arteritis, and splenomegaly to neuropathy, bursitis, and tendinopathy. The scope of this treatise is to define better for the clinician the extraosseous presentation of rheumatoid arthritis in the foot and ankle.

Elbow pain arises from diverse tendinous, ligamentous, neural, and bursal disorders involving the lateral, medial, anterior, and posterior compartments. Because clinical symptoms frequently overlap - such as epicondylitis, distal biceps tendon injury, cubital tunnel syndrome, and olecranon bursitis - precise imaging is essential for accurate diagnosis and targeted management. Ultrasonography has become a first-line modality for elbow evaluation due to its high-resolution visualization, dynamic capability, and real-time interventional guidance. This article presents the Ultrasound Musculoskelet…

Injection of steroid and anesthetic into the greater trochanteric bursa is commonly performed for trochanteric bursitis, gluteus medius/minimus tendinopathy, or as a part of a barbotage procedure for gluteus medius or minimus calcific tendonosis. Trochanteric bursal injection is widely performed both with and without image guidance, and is typically viewed as low-difficulty; however optimum needle tip position can be challenging. We discuss a simple dynamic technique to aid the practitioner in optimal needle placement.

Calcific tendinitis results from deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals in periarticular muscle attachments. Although involvement of tendons around the hip is not uncommon, gluteus medius and minimus tendons are rarely affected. We present endoscopic treatment of calcific tendonitis of gluteus medius and minimus and associated trochanteric bursitis in a patient with 2-year history of lateral hip pain. This is the first reported case treated using an endoscopic approach, which is effective and minimally invasive.

Arthroscopy of the elbow has become a valuable adjunct in the evaluation and treatment of elbow trauma and reconstruction. Arthroscopic visualization aids diagnosis and treatment while minimizing surgical trauma. The indications and techniques of elbow arthroscopy continue to expand and evolve. This article demonstrates the use of elbow arthroscopy as it relates to some of the topics in this volume. Arthroscopic setup, portal anatomy, technique, as well as an overview of trauma, loose bodies, bursitis, instability, arthrofibrosis, arthritis, and complications are discussed.
