Regional variations in the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) distribution patterns of coeliac disease (CD) have been reported. This study focuses on phenotype frequencies of a cohort of Austrian paediatric CD patients in comparison with those recorded in the literature. HLA class I and II typing was performed in 136 CD patients and 667 healthy controls from the general population of the same geographical area. The present study is a retrospective analysis of first experiences of fracture treatment with the Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation technique. Thirty-five unstable spine fractures were treated with the CD implant at the University of Louisville--Level I Trauma Center--between June, 1985 and August, 1987. In the present study we report on the effects of commonly used nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs on metallothionein (MT) and MT-I mRNA levels. A single dose of chloroquine (100 mg/kg), diclofenac (100 mg/kg), indomethacin (10 mg/kg), or piroxicam (100 mg/kg) was administered ip to C57B1 mice. After 18 h, MT levels were determined with a Cd-saturation radioassay. MT-I mRNA levels were measured by Northern Blot analyses using a probe containing the mouse MT-I gene. BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (2HPT) is one of the most important complications in chronic dialysis (CD) patients. Percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT) of the parathyroid glands was introduced initially as an alternative treatment to parathyroidectomy and, with the technical progress of parathyroid imaging, it has now become a useful adjunct to medical therapy. The development of hepatic glutamine synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) activity and expression was studied in 1 to 112 day old sparse-fur (spf) mutant mice, with X-linked ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC, EC 2.1.3.3.) deficiency.
