Circulating T-cell subsets discrepancy between bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder during mood episodes: A naturalistic, retrospective study of 1015 cases.

AIMS: We aimed to investigate whether peripheral T-cell subsets could be a biomarker to distinguish major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: Medical records of hospitalized patients in the Department of Psychiatry, the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, from January 2015 to September 2020 with a discharge diagnosis of MDD or BD were reviewed. Patients who underwent peripheral blood examination of T-cell subtype proportions, including CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ T-cell, and natural killer (NK) cells, were enrolled. The Chi-square test, t-test, or

Profiles of activated T lymphocytes in peripheral blood of Kuwaiti psoriasis vulgaris patients.

We have previously reported unexpected immunological features of psoriasis among Kuwaitis, suggesting novel patterns of immune reactivity contributing to the disease. To better define this phenomenon, we herein describe profiles of major populations and immunologically activated subsets of peripheral blood lymphocytes in a cohort of Kuwaiti psoriasis vulgaris patients. Whole venous blood from fifteen psoriatic and twenty eight normal, healthy subjects was analyzed by 2-color flow cytometry for levels of major lymphocyte species and their immunologically activated subsets. When compared to norm

HIV-related neuropsychological impairment and immunodeficiency. CD8+ lymphocytes and neopterin are related to HIV-encephalopathy.

The relationship between neuropsychological test performance and immunological parameters was studied in 52 HIV-positive patients within different stages of the infection. All subjects were neuropsychologically tested, the CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte count were measured in peripheral blood, and the concentration of neopterin and HIV-p24 antigen were measured in serum. Ten patients with AIDS were defined as neuropsychologically impaired. The CD8+ cell count was the only immunological parameter that could significantly discriminate between AIDS patients with and without neuropsychological impairmen

Effect of in vivo rapamycin treatment on de novo T-cell development in relation to induction of autoimmune-like immunopathology in the rat.

Cyclosporine (CsA) and FK506 are structurally unrelated immunosuppressants, but function in similar ways. FK506 and rapamycin (RAPA), on the other hand, have structural similarities, but act by different mechanisms to yield immunosuppression. Besides their immunosuppressive action, CsA and FK506 are known to interfere with T-cell development. CsA treatment after lethal X-irradiation and syngeneic bone marrow transplantation results in autoimmune disease, which is referred to as CsA-induced autoimmunity. In this study, we examined the effect of RAPA on T-cell development by flow cytometry and i

Dynamics and Correlates of CD8 T-Cell Counts in Africans with Primary Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection.

UNLABELLED: In individuals with HIV-1 infection, depletion of CD4+ T cells is often accompanied by a malfunction of CD8+ T cells that are persistently activated and/or exhausted. While the dynamics and correlates of CD4 counts have been well documented, the same does not apply to CD8 counts. Here, we examined the CD8 counts in a cohort of 497 Africans with primary HIV-1 infection evaluated in monthly to quarterly follow-up visits for up to 3 years in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. Statistical models revealed that (i) CD8 counts were relatively steady in the 3- to 36-month period of inf

Evaluation of lymphocyte subgroups in children with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

The aetiology of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) remains to be fully elucidated, although it follows infection with a hypermutant defective M-protein measles virus. This study analysed peripheral blood lymphocyte subgroups to determine their role in the pathophysiology of SSPE. It included 22 children with SSPE aged 2 - 15 years (patient group) and 22 age- and gender-matched healthy children (control group). In children < 6 years old, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the proportions of lymphocytes expressing the surface markers CD3, CD8,

Comprehensive evaluation of the immune risk phenotype in successfully treated HIV-infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: Despite successful treatment and CD4+ T-cell recovery, HIV-infected individuals often experience a profound immune dysregulation characterized by a persistently low CD4:CD8 T-cell ratio. This residual immune dysregulation is reminiscent of the Immune Risk Phenotype (IRP) previously associated with morbidity and mortality in the uninfected elderly (>85 years). The IRP consists of laboratory markers that include: a low CD4:CD8 T-cell ratio, an expansion of CD8+CD28- T-cells and cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity. Despite the significant overlap in immunological phenotypes between n
