Effect of tobacco use on cadmium accumulation in the oral keratinized mucosa.

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the effect of tobacco use on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd), a carcinogenic element, in the oral keratinized mucosa (OKM). METHODS: OKM samples were obtained by standard punch biopsy from nonsmokers (n = 19) and smokers (n = 21). Cd analysis was performed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The calibration curve R2 values for three wavelengths (214,439, 226,502, and 228,802 nm) were at the level of 0.9999. The frequency of consumption of foods that are Cd sources, such as seafood, rice, and vegeta…

The role of gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide in plant cadmium stress responses.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that poses a significant risk to both plant growth and human health. To mitigate or lessen Cd toxicity, plants have evolved a wide range of sensing and defense strategies. The gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is involved in plant responses to Cd stress and exhibits a crucial role in modulating Cd tolerance through a well-orchestrated interaction with several signaling pathways. Here, we review potential experimental approaches to manipulate H2S signals, concluding that research on another gasotransmitter, namely nitric oxide (NO), serves as a good mode…

Temporal hormetic response of soil microbes to cadmium: A metagenomic perspective.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The hormetic response of microbes to cadmium (Cd) is often observed in soil, but the mechanisms are unclear. In this study, we proposed a novel perspective of hormesis that successfully explained the temporal hermetic response of soil enzymes and microbes, and the variation of soil physicochemical properties. Several soil enzymatic and microbial activities were stimulated by 0.5 mg·kg-1 exogenous Cd, but inhibited at higher Cd dosages. The phenomena suggested the hormetic response to 0.5 mg·kg-1 Cd was highly generalizable concerning soil enzymes and microbial activity. However, the response d…

Occupational carcinogens in Italy: an overview on exposure to cadmium and its compounds.

Given the recognized carcinogenicity of cadmium, several regulatory interventions have been carried out over the years to protect exposed workers. The aim of the study is to investigate the prevalence and extent of exposure to cadmium among Italian workers. Data was collected from a nation-wide occupational exposure registry (SIREP, 1996-2022). Gender-specific statistical analysis was carried out for some exposure-related variables (cadmium compound, activity sector, occupational group, firm size). Potentially exposed workers were estimated for some industrial sectors. Concurrent exposures wer…

Evidence of the different effect of mercury and cadmium on the hIAPP aggregation process.

hIAPP is a hormone consisting of 37 aminoacids that shows a strong tendency to self-assemble into β-sheet-rich aggregates, which evolve to form insoluble aggregates that seem to be associated with β-cell degeneration in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Numerous factors, intrinsic and extrinsic to the peptide molecule, appear to influence the hIAPP aggregation process. Different metal ions are able to interact with the hIAPP molecule, modulating its secondary structure and subsequently the peptide's capacity to aggregate. In this study, the effect of Hg2+ and Cd2+ on the hIAPP aggregation process was

The preferential accumulation of cadmium ions among various tissues in mice.

Cadmium (Cd) is hazardous to human health because of its toxicity and long half-life of clearance. Many studies have explored the relationship between chronic Cd exposure and different human diseases. However, most of the studies limited the study targets of Cd toxicity to two or three organ systems. The goal of this study was to establish a mouse model of Cd accumulation in most organ systems and to particularly investigate the potential toxic effects of Cd to the cardiovascular system. Mice were divided into three groups: the control group, Cd-100 group, and Cd-200 group. In the control grou…

Oxidative and osmoregulatory effects of imidacloprid, cadmium, and their combinations on Daphnia magna.

Oxidative stress and osmoregulatory system damage-inducing potential of binary mixtures of neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) and Cd2+ in Daphnia magna were evaluated. Animals were subjected to subchronic (7 days) and acute (48 h) of IMI and Cd2+ effects with single and binary mixtures. ATPase and antioxidant enzyme activities with lipid peroxidation were measured. Morphometric characteristics were also evaluated. Response patterns showed variability due to the duration, concentration, and toxicant type. While the enzyme activities mostly showed a decreasing trend upon the subchronic

Toxicity effects of microplastics and nanoplastics with cadmium on the alga Microcystis aeruginosa.

The extensive spread of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in the aquatic environment has attracted widespread attention. The toxicity of cadmium (Cd) combined with microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) toward freshwater algae Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) was investigated to evaluate the environmental behavior of the Cd complexation in fresh water. Cd alone has the highest toxicity to algae. Both MPs and NPs also have a negative effect on the growth of algae as individual components due to their adsorption of nutrients and disruption of the alga's activity in a single MP…

The elemental defense effect of cadmium on Alternaria brassicicola in Brassica juncea.

BACKGROUND: The elemental defense hypothesis states a new defensive strategy that hyperaccumulators defense against herbivores or pathogens attacks by accumulating heavy metals. Brassica juncea has an excellent ability of cadmium (Cd) accumulation. However, the elemental defense effect and its regulation mechanism in B. juncea remain unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we profiled the elemental defense effect and the molecular regulatory mechanism in Cd-accumulated B. juncea after Alternaria brassicicola infection. B. juncea treated with 180 mg Kg- 1 DW CdCl2 2.5H2O exhibited obvious elemental d…

The role of inflammation in cadmium nephrotoxicity: NF-κB comes into view.

Kidney diseases are major health problem and understanding the underlined mechanisms that lead to kidney diseases are critical research points with a marked potential impact on health. Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that occurs naturally and can be found in contaminated food. Kidneys are the most susceptible organ to heavy metal intoxication as it is the main route of waste excretion. The harmful effects of Cd were previously well proved. Cd induces inflammatory responses, oxidative injury, mitochondrial dysfunction and disturbs Ca2+ homeostasis. The nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) is a cellular…

Mechanisms of Cadmium-Induced Testicular Injury: A Risk to Male Fertility.

Cadmium is a heavy toxic metal with unknown biological functions in the human body. Over time, cadmium accretion in the different visceral organs (liver, lungs, kidney, and testis) is said to impair the function of these organs, which is associated with a relatively long biological half-life and a very low rate of excretion. Recently studies have revealed that the testes are highly sensitive to cadmium. In this review, we discussed the adverse effect of cadmium on the development and biological functions of the testis. The Sertoli cells (SCs), seminiferous tubules, and Blood Testis Barrier are…

Alleviative Effect of Threonine on Cadmium-Induced Liver Injury in Mice.

As a toxic trace element commonly found in food, cadmium (Cd) can cause severe liver injury. Our previous study showed that threonine (Thr) could significantly alleviate Cd toxicity in yeast. To investigate the effect of Thr on Cd-induced liver injury in mice, twenty-four mice were randomly divided into four groups: control, Cd, and low/high dose of Thr-treatment groups (0.04 and 0.08 mmol/kg/day, respectively). After 7 days of continuous treatment, the alleviative effect of Thr on liver injury in Cd-exposed mice was assessed. The results showed that Thr significantly reduced the elevation of …

[Roles of Zinc Transporters That Control the Essentiality and Toxicity of Manganese and Cadmium].

Cellular transport systems for both essential and toxic trace elements remain elusive. In our studies on the transport systems for cadmium (Cd), we found that the cellular uptake of Cd is mediated by the transporter for manganese (Mn). We identified ZIP8 and ZIP14, members of the ZIP zinc (Zn) transporter family, as transporters having high affinities for both Cd and Mn. Notably, the uptake of Cd into rice root from soil is mediated by a transporter for Mn as well. We found that ZIP8 is highly expressed at the S3 segment of the kidney proximal tubule and can transport glomerulus-filtered Cd an…

The use of mercapto-modified palygorskite prevents the bioaccumulation of cadmium in wheat.

In this study, the mechanism by which mercapto-modified palygorskite (MPAL) mediates Cd and Mn absorption by wheat was elucidated. In the aqueous phase, MPAL can react with Cd to form Cd-thiol complexes and CdO and with Mn to form MnO. In the wheat-soil system, 0.1-0.3% MPAL application increased the biomass of wheat by 18.6-29.4% and decreased the Cd concentration in shoots and roots by 19.4-51.8% and 35.9-64%, respectively; however, MPAL application did not decrease the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extracted Cd concentration in soil, probably because the formed Cd-thiol complexe

The Effects of Waste Cement on the Bioavailability, Mobility, and Leaching of Cadmium in Soil.

Waste cement is a construction and demolition waste produced from old buildings' demolition and transformation. In recent years, the recycling of recycled concrete is limited to the use of recycled aggregate, and the research on the utilization of waste cement in waste concrete is scarce. This study explored the effective application of waste cement for the adsorption of cadmium (Cd2+) from an aqueous solution and the bioavailability and immobility of Cd2+ in soil. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of ordinary Portland cement(OPC) paste, fly ash cement (FAC) paste, and zeol…

Comparison of Four Amendments for Arsenic and Cadmium Combined Contaminated Soil.

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) are common soil pollutants whose opposing geochemical behaviors must be taken into account in the development of cost-effective, environmentally friendly remediation strategies. In this study, a pot experiment with lettuce and a field experiment with wheat were performed to examine the impacts of zeolite, biochar, MnO2, zero-valent iron (ZVI) individually and in binary combinations thereof on As-Cd pollution. The results of the pot experiment showed that biochar, MnO2 and ZVI had good passivation effects on As and Cd when provided individually, but the effects of …

The adverse impact of cadmium on immune function and lung host defense.

Cadmium (Cd) is a transition metal, also referred to as a heavy metal, that is naturally abundant in the earth's crust. It has no known benefit to humans. It is primarily released into our environment through mining and smelting in industrial processes and enters the food chain through uptake by plants from contaminated soil and water. In humans, Cd primarily enters the body through ingestion of foods and cigarette smoke and has an extremely long resident half-life in the body compared to other transition metals. Environmental workplace exposure is also a source through inhalation, although mu…

Cadmium contamination in agricultural soils of China and the impact on food safety.

Rapid industrialization in China during the last three decades has resulted in widespread contamination of Cd in agricultural soils. A considerable proportion of the rice grain grown in some areas of southern China has Cd concentrations exceeding the Chinese food limit, raising widespread concern regarding food safety. In this review, we summarize rice grain Cd concentrations in national Chinese markets and in field surveys from contaminated areas, and analyze the potential health risk associated with increased dietary Cd intake. For subsistence rice farmers living in some contaminated areas o
