The udders from 13 culled ewes and liver, spleen, kidney, lung and brain from 15 lambs, 11 months old, were examined for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) at slaughter. Lm was isolated from 1 of 13 udders, from 6 of the 15 brains and from 0–4 of the other organs from each of the 15 lambs. Internal organs from 68 sheep submitted for post-mortem examination were examined in the same way. Lm was isolated from 25 of these animals. Lm was isolated from the brain of 7 of 9 animals with encephalitis, and from 0–3 of the other 4 organs examined. Lm was also isolated from 10–20 % of the organ

As a result of determination of immunoglobulins of class A and M by the method of simple radial immunodiffusion with the use of monospecific antiglobulin sera it appeared that in the sera of carriers immunogolubins M were contained in much lesser quantity than in typhoid patients. The content of immunoglobulins A was somewhat greater in the blood sera of carriers.

PURPOSE: Women with BRCA1/2 mutations have higher risk for breast and ovarian cancers. Available intervention actions include prophylactic surgeries and breast screening, which vary significantly in cost, cancer prevention, and in resulting death from other causes. Whipple's disease is a rare multi-systemic disease associated with the ubiquitous environmental bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. Over the last 10 years, since the isolation of the bacterium, recent advances in medical microbiology, epidemiology and cellular biology have provided major insights into the understanding of the pathophysiology of T. whipplei infections that may result in Whipple's disease.

Neisseria meningitidis is the etiologic agent of meningococcal meningitis. Carriage of the organism is approximately 10% while active disease occurs at a rate of 1:100,000. By means of an in vitro culture technique, 75 samples of horse blood were examined for Babesia equi, a causative agent of equine piroplasmosis. At the time of culture initiation, 15 samples were microscopically positive for B. equi, and this was subsequently confirmed by culture diagnosis. Sixty samples showed no parasites in Giemsa-stained thin blood smears. However, after the culturing process, parasites were found in blood smears of 36 of these samples. To determine serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2 R) levels in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, serum sIL-2 R was measured in 260 subjects with chronic HCV infection, including 100 patients who had previously been treated with natural interferon (IFN) alpha, and in 51 HCV RNA-negative controls.
