Fertility effects of the 14;20 Robertsonian translocation in cattle.

Superovulation and embryo collection procedures were used to study the effect of the 14;20 Robertsonian translocation on fertility and embryo viability. Karyotypes were successfully completed on cells from 77 of the 279 embryos prepared for such analysis. Embryos from 4 cows heterozygous for the translocation were studied. Two bulls with the same condition were studied by using their semen in artificial insemination of cows with normal karyotypes. The proportions of fertilized ova and transferable embryos were not different between cows with the 14;20 translocation and those with normal karyot

Strategies for preventing milk fever in dairy cattle.

Milk fever is a complex metabolic disorder that occurs at the onset of lactation. Clinical symptoms of this disease include inappetence, tetany, inhibition of urination and defecation, lateral recumbency, and eventual coma and death if left untreated. The hallmark of this disease is severe hypocalcemia, which probably accounts for most of the clinical signs associated with a milk fever episode. Several factors have been consistently associated with increased incidence of milk fever, including parturition and initiation of lactation, advancing age, breed, and diet. Of the various methods used i

Pinless external fixation of mandible fractures in cattle.

OBJECTIVE: This report describes our experience with a new technique for stabilization of mandibular fractures in cattle using a pinless external fixator. STUDY DESIGN: Mandibular fractures were stabilized with a pinless external fixator, which is a modification of a unilateral AO/ASIF (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation)-fixator in which pins are replaced with bone clamps. ANIMALS: Seven dairy cattle between 1 and 5 years of age. METHODS: Fracture stabilization was achieved by using the pinless external fixator. Postoperative management included intravenous administration of so…

Clinical and pathological studies in cattle with hepatic disease.

In cattle with hepatic lipidosis, hepatic abscessation, leptospirosis, biliary calculi or fasciolosis, the progression of the disease was studied by serial measurements of serum total bile acid concentrations, plasma glutamate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, 5'-nucleotidase and leucine aminopeptidase activities Terminalia avicennioides and by liver biopsy. Regardless of the cause of the hepatic disease, weight loss, anorexia, dullness and depression were consistent features. Signs of hepatic encephalopathy, such as blindness, head pressing, excitability, ataxia and weakness were less…

Degenerative axonal swellings in the trigeminal ganglia of cattle.

We examined the acidophilic oval structures which were frequently encountered in the trigeminal ganglia of cattle that clinically showed trigeminal disturbance. Histopathologically, these structures were composed of numerous fine granules and were generally located near the neuronal cell bodies. They were demonstrated in silver preparations and, using neuron-specific enolase, tau and ubiquitin antibodies. Electron microscopy revealed an accumulation of large membranous vesicles thought to be derived from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum of axons, a few degenerative mitochondria and non-membran…

A new Robertsonian translocation in cattle, rob(16;20).

A new centric fusion translocation, rob(16;20), was discovered in a phenotypically normal bull. C-banding revealed the dicentric nature of this centric fusion. This bull is a descendant of a German red pied bull and a Czechoslovakian red pied cow. Its mother and 26 half-brothers had normal karyotypes, indicating that this translocation arose "de novo".

Prophylaxis of intravenous catheter-related thrombophlebitis in cattle.

Two methods of preventing intravenous catheter-related thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein, using clinical and ultrasonographic criteria, were compared. The first method consisted of minimising bacteriological contamination by the preparation of the skin as if for surgery. The second method involved the daily subcutaneous administration of low doses of heparin to decrease procoagulant activity. The results showed that the preparation of the skin before the placement of an indwelling catheter in the jugular vein and adequate daily maintenance of the catheter were of great importance in the pre

Distribution of lesions in cattle infected with Mycobacterium bovis.

Detailed postmortem examinations were conducted on 30 cattle from a dairy herd with bovine tuberculosis to determine the distribution of lesions in Mycobacterium bovis-infected cattle. Twenty-four different tissue specimens from each animal were examined for gross lesions and collected for bacteriologic culturing and histologic examination. Tuberculosis was confirmed in 15 cattle with evidence of infection in 1 or more of the following tissues: medial retropharyngeal, parotid, tracheobronchial, mediastinal, caudal deep cervical, and subiliac lymph nodes; palatine tonsil; and lung. Gross and hi…

Kinetic disposition of triclabendazole in buffalo compared to cattle.

Concentrations of triclabendazole sulfoxide and its sulfone metabolite in plasma were measured in buffalo and cross-bred cattle after single intraruminal administration of triclabendazole at two different doses. Plasma concentrations of both metabolites were significantly lower in buffalo than cattle at both doses, which resulted in a smaller area under the concentration-time curve, a lower concentration maximum and a lower relative bioavailability. Thus, the recommended doses of 12 mg/kg body weight for the treatment of bubaline fascioliasis may not be valid for buffalo because of the substan…

Lead arsenate poisoning in a herd of beef cattle.

Lead arsenate poisoning was diagnosed in 2 beef heifers and was suspected in 6 other cattle from the same herd that had died previously and were not examined. Clinical signs in affected cattle included staggering, dehydration, hemorrhage, acidemia, and shock. Diagnosis was by arsenic and lead analysis of urine samples and kidney and liver tissue digests. Both examined heifers died within 4 days of onset of clinical signs. These cattle had been moved from an area with poor grazing conditions to a pasture with abundant forage. This pasture had an open shed that contained an open sack of lead ars…

[Tongue play and manganese deficiency in dairy cattle].

The present paper discusses "tongue rolling" observed in dairy cattle farms of a region in northern Greece associated with manganese deficiency. In these animals total body manganese status was evaluated by determining hair, as well as feed manganese content. Cows exhibiting tongue rolling had significantly lower hair manganese content, compared to non-tongue rolling control animals from other farms; in addition, feedstuff analysis demonstrated that manganese and inorganic phosphorus intake of affected cows was also significantly lower.

[Leptospirosis in slaughter cattle--serologic and bacterial study].

Antibodies to leptospiras were demonstrated in 91 cases (7.4%) out of 1,239 animals examined by serological assays of blood sera of cattle slaughtered in slaughter-houses and coming from 21 farms of one district. The antibodies were detected in animals coming from eleven out of the farms investigated (52.4%). The most frequent reactions were proved with leptospiras of the serovar L. grippotyphosa (61.8%) and with leptospiras of the serological group Sejroe (18.9%), rarely with leptospiras of the serovar L. icterohaemorrhagiae or copenhageni (5.7%). Antibodies to leptospiras of other serovars (…

Distribution of antigen in cattle infected with rinderpest virus.

Five Holstein heifers (approximately 8 months of age and weighing 225-275 kg) were inoculated subcutaneously with 1,000 TCID50 of rinderpest virus, virulent Kabete O strain. They become clinically ill 2 to 5 days post-inoculation, with fever (40 C to 41.5 C), conjunctivitis, and diarrhea. All were euthanatized when moribund at 6 days postinoculation. The following tissues were collected in formalin, embedded in paraffin, and subsequently subjected to histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination: tongue, buccal mucosa, soft palate, esophagus, rumen, abomasum, duodenum, jejunum with and w

Necrotic encephalitis as a manifestation of acute sarcocystosis in cattle.

Extensive brain pathology attributed to Sarcocystis is described in a heifer and a 2- to 4-month-old calf. These appear to be the first recorded cases of naturally occurring acute sarcocystosis in cattle in sub-Saharan Africa. The heifer became recumbent and had convulsions before dying, while clinical signs in the calf included loss of body mass, diarrhoea, nervousness and opisthotonus. Disseminated haemorrhages were noted in the brains of both animals at necropsy. Microscopically, the grey and white matter contained multiple areas of necrosis associated with haemorrhage, fibrinoid vasculitis…

Observations on cattle ticks in Huila Province (Angola).

In Huila Province of Angola, 3864 ticks were collected during a parasitological survey carried out in the rainy season from October 1990 to April 1991. The samples were collected from cattle gathered for the annual vaccination campaign against contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, anthrax and blackleg in 18 veterinary stations of six municipalities. After tick classification, the following proportions of ticks were obtained: Rhipicephalus evertsi mimeticus (27.1%), Amblyomma pomposum (26.4%), Boophilus decoloratus (19.0%), Rhipicephalus zambesiensis (9.4%), Rhipicephalus duttoni (8.3%), Hyalomma …

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy: a new disease of cattle?

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was first recognized in Great Britain in 1985. Most believe that the disease is of recent origin initiated by feeding rendered animal protein from scrapie-infected sheep to cattle, then perpetuated by feeding rendered infected cattle to other cattle. This paper explores an alternative hypothesis that BSE existed in cattle populations in an unrecognized form for a much longer time until amplified by changes in the rendering process that allowed cattle to cattle transmission to occur. This viewpoint is supported by observations that transmissible mink encep…

A new Robertsonian translocation in cattle, rob(15;25).

A new Robertsonian translocation, rob(15;25), was discovered in a Portuguese Barrosa cow. The animal (2n = 59,XX) was found by G- and R-banding to be a heterozygous carrier of a centric fusion translocation involving chromosomes 15 and 25. C-banding revealed the dicentric nature of this new centric fusion. Comparison of this new translocation with the well-known Robertsonian translocation rob(1;29), which is often found in the same breed, confirmed that two different chromosomes (25 and 29) were involved in the short arms of these two Robertsonian translocations.

[Infection with Leptospira interrogans, serovar mozdok, in cattle].

In East Germany the same serovar, Leptospira mozdok, of the Pomona serogroup is found in cattle as well as in swine populations (Zieris 1989). Nowadays cases of bovine leptospirosis caused by infection with L. pomona have no significance. There are marked epizoological differences between infection with L. mozdok and L. pomona. The main source of infection with L. mozdok for cattle is the black striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius). Secondary homonomous transmission occurs among the cattle. The clinical course of both infections is the same--including peracute, acute and chronic forms. Impor…
