BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM), or spread of cancer cells into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is characterized by a rapid onset of debilitating neurological symptoms and markedly bleak prognosis. The lack of reproducible in vitro and in vivo models has prevented the development of novel, LM-specific therapies. Although LM allows for longitudinal sampling of floating cancer cells with a spinal tap, attempts to culture patient-derived leptomeningeal cancer cells have not been successful.

Serotonin content in the pineal glands and in their subcellular fractions of the pig housed under natural and limited to circa 2.5 hours per day lighting conditions has been examined spectrofluorometrically. The shortened circadian light phase caused dramatically high drop of serotonin content in the evening (1900-2000). Correlation between presence of dense bodies in subcellular fractions and content of serotonin has been not observed.

This study aimed to evaluate the potential of phytochemicals from two native UAE plant species, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Tamarix nilotica, as anti-cancer agents. Regulation of the immune response by macrophages was studied with cellular resistance to Listeria monocytogenes as parameter. The use of agents which suppress macrophage activity during the induction-phase of immunity enabled the induction of protective immunity with killed listeria. Fractionation of the cell content of listeria yielded an RNA'se sensitive fraction which in a dose of 300 ng and in combination with the cationic surfactant dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bromide induced protective immunity against listeria.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To reduce relapse risk, Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is part of conditioning regimens for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in pediatric acute leukemia. The study purpose was to evaluate clinical practices regarding TBI, such as fractionation, organ shielding and delivery techniques, among SIOPE affiliated radiotherapy centers.
METHODS: An electronic survey was sent out to 233 SIOPE affiliated centers, containing 57 questions about clinical practice of TBI. Surveys could be answered anonymously.

Fractionation of dichloromethane (DCM) molecules with different chlorine isotopes by aerobic methylobacteria Methylobacterium dichloromethanicum DM4 and Albibacter nethylovorans DM10; cell-free extract of strain DM4; and transconjugant Methylobacterium evtorquens Al1/pME 8220, expressing the dcmA gene for DCM dehalogenase but unable to grow on DCM, was studied. Kinetic indices of DCM isotopomers for chlorine during bacterial dehalogenation and diffusion were compared. A two-step model is proposed, which suggests diffusional DCM transport to bacterial cells.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to determine whether percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) dependence was significantly different between 2 prospective trials with different radiation fractionation schemes.
METHODS: Stage III or IV locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinomas arising from the oral cavity, hypopharynx, oropharynx, nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, or larynx were treated using hyperfractionation (A-3 protocol) or accelerated fractionation (A-4 protocol) with chemotherapy. Amifostine was administered 15 to 30 minutes preradiation, at a dose of 500 mg/day in both protocols.
