Allergy to dialysis materials.

One hundred and six unselected patients were screened for allergic symptoms, specific IgE against ethylene oxide (ETO), isocyanates (ISO), formaldehyde (FA), phthalates (PHT), total IgE and eosinophil count. Complement activation was measured during cellulosic dialysis in atopic patients and in a control group. Sixteen patients demonstrated mild allergic symptoms during dialysis treatment. Ten of them had IgE elevation and eosinophilia. Eight of these patients had positive RASTs (ETO: n = 5, ETO-ISO(?)-FA: n = 2, ISO-PHT: n = 1) against dialysis material. All eight had an eosinophilia and seve

Open-Air Plasma Treatment to Enhance Nanoparticle Adhesion on Nylon- and Cotton-Based Fabrics for Chemical Protection.

Nylon- and cotton-based fabrics, particularly a 50:50 nylon-cotton blend ("NYCO"), are commonly used for military and workforce garments. Developing high-throughput methods to attach reactive or sorptive metal oxide or metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) is important for chemical protection. Open-air plasma treatment has been used to activate cotton, nylon, and NYCO such that they covalently bond to ca. 20 nm zinc oxide and UiO-66-NH2 MOF particles. For cotton, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that plasma treatment partially oxidizes cellulose, with transformation of

Purple sweet potato polysaccharide ameliorates concanavalin A-induced hepatic injury by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a prevalent liver disease that can potentially lead to hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis. The prolonged administration of immunosuppressive medications carries significant risks for patients. Purple sweet potato polysaccharide (PSPP), a macromolecule stored in root tubers, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immune-enhancing, and intestinal flora-regulating properties. Nevertheless, investigation into the role and potential mechanisms of PSPP in AIH remains notably scarce. PURPOSE: Our aim was to explore the possible protective impacts of PSPP again

[Antioxidant activity of cationic whey protein isolate].

The process of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in biological membranes of cells is carried out by free radical mechanism, a feature of which is the interaction of radicals with other molecules. In this work we investigated the antioxidant activity of cationic whey protein isolate, obtained by the cation-exchange chromatography on KM-cellulose from raw cow's milk, in vitro and in vivo. In biological liquids, which are milk, blood serum, fetal fluids, contains a complex of biologically active substances with a unique multifunctional properties, and which are carrying out a protective, antimicrobial, re

(+)-Majoranolide analogues from regioselective Baeyer-Villiger reactions mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents.

A series of enantiopure (+)-majoranolide analogues has been synthesized from the cellulose-derived chiral platform chemical (-)-Cyrene. The bicyclic ketone was substituted at C3 with a variety of benzylidene moieties via base-catalysed aldol condensations and a subsequent Baeyer-Villiger oxidation was achieved using the hypervalent iodine(III) reagent (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) in combination with methanesulfonic acid. The reaction proceeded via an intermediate hemiketal, with rate and yield enhancement using solvent mixtures containing 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. PIDA gave higher yields than p

Immune microenvironment modulation for treating inflammatory periodontal bone defects using a dynamic dual-responsive hydrogel.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the structures supporting teeth, primarily induced by bacteria. Plaque control and maintenance of local periodontal immune homeostasis are crucial for treating periodontitis and achieving bone regeneration. In this study, we prepared a pH/ROS dual-responsive hydrogel system (CDFBCS@SA) composed of modified carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCDA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) through dynamic chemical crosslinking to load sinapic acid (SA), a natural phenolic acid with antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties. This hydrogel system can d

Nitric oxide mitigates cadmium stress by promoting the biosynthesis of cell walls in Robinia pseudoacacia roots.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a growing concern worldwide, because it threatens human health through the food chain. Woody plants, such as the pioneer species black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), are widely used in phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils, but strongly differ in Cd tolerance. Nitric oxide (NO), a highly reactive gas of biogenic and anthropogenic origin, has been shown to protect plants to Cd exposure. We investigated the protective mechanism of NO against Cd toxicity in black locust using physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches. We studied the correlation betw

Engineered Sulfonated Bacterial Cellulose Hydrogel with Dual Bioactive-Drug Delivery Functions for Precision Treatment of Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder driven by dysregulated keratinocyte-immune interactions and oxidative stress. To address limitations of conventional therapies, we engineered a sulfated bacterial cellulose/chitosan hydrogel that integrates intrinsic bioactivity with controlled methotrexate delivery (MTX-SBC/CS Gel). Sulfonation introduced sulfonic groups, conferring potent ROS-scavenging activity while optimizing drug compatibility and release kinetics. Chitosan enabled self-healing and bioadhesion through hydrogen-bonding networks. Molecular simulations and experiments revea

Probing capping mechanisms and polymer matrix loading of biogenic vaterite CaCO3-Ag hybrid through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Despite extensive research in the literature, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via capping mechanisms remains incompletely understood. This study employs a mechanistic approach to unravel the underlying molecular interactions driving the capping process of biogenic vaterite CaCO3-Ag and explores their interactions with different polymer matrices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to reveal the capping mechanisms, surface composition alterations, and vaterite polymorph transitions. The oxidation states of AgNPs exhibited distinct changes under different capping agents

Characterization of carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils and oligosaccharides from Kraft pulp fibers and their potential elicitor effect on the gene expression of Capsicum annuum.

Biomass-derived oligo- and polysaccharides may act as elicitors, i.e., bioactive molecules that trigger plant immune responses. This is particularly important to increase the resistance of plants to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this study, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) gels were obtained by TEMPO-mediated oxidation of unbleached and bleached kraft pulps. The molecular structures were characterized with ESI and MALDI MS. Analysis of the fine sequences was achieved by MS and MS/MS of the water-soluble oligosaccharides obtained by acid hydrolysis of the CNF gels. The analysis revealed the presen

Preparation of robust and fully bio-based modified paper via mussel-inspired layer-by-layer assembly of chitosan and carboxymethyl cellulose for food packaging.

A green and facile method was proposed to prepare robust and fully bio-based modified paper in this study, which involved in layer-by-layer deposition of chitosan (CS) and mussel adhesive protein-mimetic polymer (dopamine-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC-g-DA) on paper surface and subsequent oxidative cross-linking by sodium periodate. The mechanical, barrier and antibacterial properties of the cross-linked multilayer-modified paper significantly improved with the increased bilayer numbers. Compared with unmodified paper, cross-linked (CS/CMC-g-DA)6 multilayer-modified paper exhibited 71.6

Cellulose Nanocrystal-ZnO Nanohybrids for Controlling Photocatalytic Activity and UV Protection in Cosmetic Formulation.

A high-performance semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) on melamine formaldehyde-coated cellulose nanocrystals (MFCNCs) was synthesized and evaluated for its application in smart cosmetics. These ZnO@MFCNC hybrid nanostructures were evaluated for their in vitro sun protection factor performance and photocatalytic activity under simulated UV and solar radiation. The photodegradation kinetics of a model pigment (methylene blue) was fitted to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. A 4-fold increase in the photocatalytic activity of ZnO@MFCNCs was observed when compared to pure ZnO. This is associated with (i)

Encapsulated granuloma (surgiceloma) caused by retained Surgicel® following liver lobectomy in a dog: a case report.

A 12-year-old dog underwent liver lobectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma, and Surgicel® was used intraoperatively for haemostasis. Three months after surgery, computed tomography revealed a solitary abdominal mass, which was surgically removed. Histopathology identified the mass as retained Surgicel® surrounded by granulomatous inflammation. Although Surgicel® is generally considered safe, retained material may mimic abscess, haematoma or tumour recurrence on imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first veterinary case describing an encapsulated granuloma caused by retained Surgice

Formation of carcinogens indoors by surface-mediated reactions of nicotine with nitrous acid, leading to potential thirdhand smoke hazards.

This study shows that residual nicotine from tobacco smoke sorbed to indoor surfaces reacts with ambient nitrous acid (HONO) to form carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). Substantial levels of TSNAs were measured on surfaces inside a smoker's vehicle. Laboratory experiments using cellulose as a model indoor material yielded a > 10-fold increase of surface-bound TSNAs when sorbed secondhand smoke was exposed to 60 ppbv HONO for 3 hours. In both cases we identified 1-(N-methyl-N-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridinyl)-4-butanal, a TSNA absent in freshly emitted tobacco smoke, as the major pro

The neuroprotective effect of Diosgenin in the rat Valproic acid model of autism.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with two core behavioral symptoms restricted/repetitive behavior and social-communication deficit. The unknown etiology of ASD makes it difficult to identify potential treatments. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant drug with teratogenic effects during pregnancy in humans and rodents. Prenatal exposure to VPA induces autism-like behavior in both humans and rodents. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Diosgenin in prenatal Valproic acid-induced autism in rats. METHOD: pregnant Wister

"Bioactive" Therapeutic Contact Lens Triggered by Biomimetic Chiral Helical Nanoarchitectonics for Rapid Corneal Repair.

Consistent corneal epithelial injury would cause chronic inflammation, neovascularization, and even corneal scarring, resulting in vision loss. Rapid repair is crucial for treatment, within which the use of therapeutic contact lenses presents great promise. A great challenge is how to achieve rapid repair of severely deficient corneal epithelium and regulation of the oxidative stress environment simultaneously. Herein, a "bioactive" therapeutic contact lens, mimicking the layered helical structure of the native cornea, is designed based on the assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) inside p

The effect on the intestines of continuous release of methylene blue from a drug delivery system: an experimental study in a chick embryo gastroschisis model.

Increased small bowel nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity has been suspected as a cause of postnatal intestinal dysmotility in gastroschisis. The effect of continuous delivery of methylene blue loaded polymer (MBLP) hydroxy-propyl methyl cellulose-ethyl cellulose (HPEC-MC) and daily injection of methylene blue (MB) on the intestinal damage (ID) was evaluated using a chick embryo gastroschisis model. Fourteen-day-old fertilized chick eggs were divided into five groups. In the control (C) group, no intervention was performed. In the sham (S) group, the allantoic and amniotic membranes were open
