The clinical characteristics and therapy of syndrome of craniocerebral-cervical vertebral injury.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristics and new treatment for syndrome of craniocerebral-cervical vertebral injury. METHODS: The clinical data of 52 patients with head injury accompanied by neck injury were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Craniocerebral injury could result in damage to cervical vertebrae, muscles, vessels and nerves, and even cause vertebral artery injury, which may lead to insufficient blood-supply of vertebral-basal artery. All patients were treated with cervical vertebral traction and the results were good. CONCLUSIONS: Acute craniocerebral injury with symp…

Tracheal injury added to cervical bone destruction due to the impact of hitting the water surface: four immersed adult bodies.

In the forensic examinations of cases of falling, two properties of the water surface, namely its nature as a hard, flat object and as a soft and ungraspable substance must be appreciated. Namely, at the moment of impact, the water surface exerts a greater resistance against relatively broad areas like the head, face and trunk than against the extremities that have a small area. Therefore, total resistance against the whole body would promote flexure. We experienced 72 autopsy cases of immersed bodies during a 4-year period. The cause of death for 64 of these with or without cervical vertebra

Old Cardinal Odontoid Process Type II Fracture With Notable Displacement in a Child Who Recovered From Conservative Treatment: Review of the Literature.

Injuries to the cardinal spine are quite uncommon in pediatric patients. Nonetheless, the second cervical vertebra are crucial for the human neck's extension and rotation. Surgery is the most typical treatment for patients who have a type II fracture of the cardinal vertebra's odontoid process along with a considerable displacement of the odontoid process. Nonetheless, surgical intervention is characterized by challenges and problems following surgery. For the first time, a youngster who had a type II fracture of the cardinal vertebra's odontoid process and substantial odontoid process displac

Lumbar osteochondroma arising from spondylolytic l3 lamina.

Osteochondromas are common, benign tumors in the long bones, but osteochondromas are rare in the vertebrae. Most vertebral osteochondromas arise from the cervical or upper thoracic spine. However, lumbar osteochondromas have rarely been reported. In this report, a rare case of a lumbar osteochondroma arising from the spondylolytic L3 lamina in a 57-year-old woman is presented. She also had a ruptured disc and lumbar canal stenosis at L4-5-S1. The osteochondroma was completely removed and a posterior lumbar interbody fusion and instrumentation were performed. Considering the rarity of osteochon

In vivo three-dimensional kinematics of the cervical spine during head rotation in patients with cervical spondylosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Kinematics of the cervical spine during head rotation was investigated using 3-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cervical spondylosis (CS). OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate in vivo 3D kinematics of the spondylotic cervical spine during head rotation. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several in vivo studies have identified kinematic differences between normal and spondylotic subjects, but only two-dimensional flexion/extension motion has been investigated. Differences of in vivo 3D cervical motion during head rotation between normal and spondylotic subjects

Biomechanical modelling of impact-related fracture characteristics and injury patterns of the cervical spine associated with riding accidents.

BACKGROUND: Horse-related injuries are manifold and can involve the upper and lower limbs, the trunk, spine or head. Cervical spine injuries are not among the most common injuries. However, they can be fatal and often result in neurological symptoms. This study investigated the influence of the posture of the cervical spine on the ultimate strength and the pattern of vertebrae failure with the aim to provide some guidance for protective clothing design. METHODS: Eighteen human cervical spines, each divided into two specimens (three vertebrae each), were subjected to a simulator test designed

MURCS association--a review of 7 cases.

MURCS association (Mullerian hypoplasia/aplasia, renal agenesis and cervicothoracic somite dysplasia) is emerging as the second most frequent cause of primary amenorrhoea after Turner syndrome. Seven cases have been described and analysed. All cases had absence of uterus and tubes 85% had cervical spine abnormalities such as vertebral fusion, hypoplasia of vertebrae or butterfly vertebrae and short stature and 28% had renal agenesis or ectopy. The latter finding is in contrast to the reports in world literature where the frequency of renal agenesis is higher. There was no familial incidence in

Evolution of the axial skeleton of early dinosaurs and the role of meristic and homeotic processes.

Changes in the axial skeleton played an important role in dinosaur evolution, with some of the oldest dinosaurs showing evidence of sacralization events. The increased number of early dinosaur discoveries over the last decade provides an opportunity to better characterize this phenomenon. It has led us to revise our understanding of axial evolution in early dinosaurs. Results support that the last common ancestor of Dinosauria would probably present 9 cervical, 16 dorsal and 2 sacral vertebrae (primordials). Early saurischians maintain a consistent number of vertebrae with presacral origin, an

Thoracolumbar Arachnoid Cyst with Horner Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Horner syndrome (HS) results from the interruption of sympathic pathway, and the patients have a group of signs including miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, and anhydrosis. While HS is mainly caused by cervical sympathetic nerve injury such as sympathetic chain tumor, we report here a HS case caused by a thoracolumbar arachnoid cyst. Imageological examination showed the cyst existed in spinal canal from the T11 to L3 level, which was further confirmed by operation. The tumor attacked the lateral margin of intervertebral foramen at certain stages. In MRI scan, no abnormality was found in the patient

Chordoma of the low cervical spine presenting with Horner's syndrome.

Chordomas arising from the low cervical spine have been reported rarely. This case report expands the knowledge of chordomas of the low cervical spine by reporting the clinical, radiological, and pathological findings of a case of chordoma arising from C6 vertebra in a 61-year-old man presenting with left Horner's syndrome. This clinical presentation is uncommon for cervical chordomas and resulted from the tumor growth in the left carotid space resulting in the total encasement of common carotid artery and involvement of sympathetic fibers ipsilaterally.

A case of TSH receptor antibody-positive hyperthyroidism with functioning metastases of thyroid carcinoma.

The presence of TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) is rarely responsible for hyperthyroidism due to metastatic lesions of thyroid carcinoma. A 70-year-old woman was incidentally found to be thyrotoxic around the time that external irradiation was performed for multiple bone metastases 9 years after subtotal thyroidectomy for follicular carcinoma. Hyperthyroidism persisted after oral administration of thiamazole. Relevant laboratory data were as follows: FT4 9.6 ng/L, FT3 7.3 ng/L, TSH <0.19 mU/L, TBII 70, TSAb 735, and Tg 32,000 microg/L. 131I-total body scan showed 131I accumulation in the occipita

Spinal decompression and radionuclide therapy for an unresectable FGF23 transmitted tumor causing cervical myelopathy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare disorder characterized by hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, mainly caused by benign tumors with excessive secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and somatostatin receptor expression. Although complete excision is recommended, reports on treatment strategies for anatomically challenging surgical cases are lacking. We report an unresectable case of FGF23 transmitted tumor in the cervical vertebrae causing myelopathy, which was treated with surgical decompression combined with radionuclide therapy.
