The sensory organs in tegument of two trypanorhynchean species--Nybelinia surmenicola (plerocercoid) and adult Parachristianella sp. (Cestoda, Trypanorhyncha)--were studied with the aim of ultrastructural description and a comparative analysis. The Nybelinia surmenicola plerocercoid lacks papillae with sensory cilia on the bothria adhesive surface. We found an unciliated sensory organ within the median bothria fold. This unciliated free nerve ending contains the central electron-dense disc, three dense supporting rings, and broad root. The nerve ending locates in the basal matrix under the teg…

Tapeworms (class Cestoda) of the genus Hymenolepis are etiological agents of hymenolepiasis, the most prevalent cestode infection in humans, which especially affects children, causing a significant public health impact. Tapeworms have complex life cycles, undergoing morphological and physiological transformations that need precise control of genetic expression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs that regulate gene expression post transcriptionally, with a prominent role in developmental processes. Previously, we described the microRNA (miRNA) repertoire of Hymenolepis microstoma, a validated la…

The zoonotic cestode Spirometra mansoni (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae), characterized by a complex life cycle involving plerocercoid larvae (spargana) in amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, as well as adult intestinal stages in carnivorous mammals, particularly felids and canids, presents significant risks to both veterinary and public health. To address diagnostic challenges in feline infections, potential serodiagnostic antigens were characterized using an integrated immunoproteomic and molecular approach. Four subcutaneous infections in nude mouse demonstrated plerocercoid larval migration fr…

Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), yellow-necked mice (A. flavicollis) and voles (Microtus agrestis) from the British Isles and from the European mainland have been reported to carry a cestode referred to as Hymenolepis murissylvatici. However, based on the morphometrics of diagnostic characters, Prokopič (1967) showed that isolates of this species from wood mice were indistinguishable from a species parasitizing a range of birds, which he referred to as Variolepis crenata. Subsequently, Vaucher et al (2003) showed that this was not a valid conclusion. Here, we track the key nomenclature changes

Seasonal patterns in parasite diversity and prevalence are determined by a suite of factors ranging from environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, precipitation) to host behavior and traits. The forces shaping these patterns are increasingly unstable due to anthropogenic climate change, emphasizing the importance of leveraging natural history collections to understand how historical environmental conditions contributed to the spatiotemporal distributions of parasites and parasitic diseases. We implemented frameworks from metacommunity analyses to test for seasonal trends in parasite communi

The Asian fish tapeworm (AFT), Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, is a highly invasive and pathogenic parasite of freshwater fishes, present on all continents except Antarctica. Globally, 310 + definitive fish host species have been recorded, with Mexico showing the highest number of reports. Here, we summarize the current knowledge about the biology, distribution, and ecological determinants of this parasite, highlighting key knowledge gaps that could guide future research. Considering Mexico has quite comprehensive records of this parasite (both in host and geographical terms), we propose that this

Cancer is still one of the leading causes of death, with an estimated 19.3 million new cases every year. Our paper presents the tumor-suppressing effect of Taenia crassiceps and Mesocestoides corti on B16F10 melanoma, the intraperitoneal application of which followed the experimental infection with these tapeworms, resulting in varying degrees of effectiveness in two strains of mice. In the case of M. corti-infected ICR mice, a strong tumor growth suppression occurred, which was accompanied by a significant reduction in the formation of distant metastases in the liver and lung. Tapeworm-infect

AbstractIndirect genetic effects (IGEs) exist when there is heritable variation in one organism's ability to alter a second organism's traits. For example, parasites have antigens that can induce a host immune response, as well as disparate strategies to evade or suppress host immunity; among-parasite genetic variation in these antigens generates among-host variation in immune traits. Here, we experimentally show that the cestode parasite Schistocephalus solidus exerts an IGE on an immune trait (peritoneal fibrosis) in its threespine stickleback host: stickleback developed strong fibrosis afte

The risk and severity of pathogen infections in humans, livestock, or wild organisms depend on host immune function, which can vary between closely related host populations or even among individuals. This immune variation can entail between-population differences in immune gene coding sequences, copy number, or expression. In recent years, many studies have focused on population divergence in immunity using whole-tissue transcriptomics. But, whole-tissue transcriptomics cannot distinguish between evolved differences in gene regulation within cells, versus changes in cell composition within the

This paper aims to expand understanding of a poorly known group of cestodes that parasitize an intriguingly diverse suite of elasmobranchs. The group's three currently described members (i.e., Pentaloculum macrocephalum, Pentaloculum hoi, and Zyxibothrium kamienae) parasitize an electric ray, a carpet shark, and a skate, respectively. Pentaloculum grahami n. sp. is described from a second genus of carpet shark, specifically Parascyllium collare, in Australia. Zyxibothrium duffyi n. sp. and Zyxibothrium healyae n. sp. are described from the deep-sea skates Brochiraja asperula and Brochiraja spi

A lack of accurate information on the prevalence and distribution of Anoplocephala spp. infections on horse farms has led to insufficient attention to tapeworm control and increasing horse anoplocephaloses in Europe. Our study aimed to examine the occurrence of Anoplocephala spp. infection using coprological, serum- and saliva-based antibody detection methods and to analyze the risk factors associated with tapeworm infection in domestic horses in Slovakia. Fecal, serum, and saliva samples were collected from 427 horses from 31 farms in Slovakia. Additionally, a questionnaire study was conducte

Echinococcus granulosus, the etiological agent of human cystic echinococcosis (formerly known as hydatid disease), represents a serious worldwide public health problem with limited treatment options. The essential role played by the neuromuscular system in parasite survival and the relevance of serotonin (5-HT) in parasite movement and development make the serotonergic system an attractive source of drug targets. In this study, we cloned and sequenced a cDNA coding for the serotonin transporter from E. granulosus (EgSERT). Bioinformatic analyses suggest that EgSERT has twelve transmembrane dom

Diphyllobothriosis caused by the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum) is an emerging parasitic disease reported also from non-endemic areas, including Europe (Spain). The origin of these human cases is unknown but should be related to fresh marine fish imported from endemic areas. In this study, we molecularly confirmed common dolphins Delphinus delphis off Argentina as euparatenic transit hosts of A. pacificus. Preliminary analysis of their stomach content, together with data from previous studies from the Southwest Atlantic, showed that common dolp

Here, we report the first record of pleroceroids of the Nearctic tapeworm Proteocephalus ambloplitis (Leidy, 1887) in European fresh waters. The plerocercoids were found encapsulated in the internal organs of the invasive pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) in a pond in Bègles Plage, Bordeaux, France. This parasite species was not observed in L. gibbosus collected from two nearby localities, Bordeaux Lac and a pond in the Parc de Fontaudin. Species identification was confirmed using molecular data and morphological characteristics.

In November of 2013, a specimen of Japanese sleeper ray, Narke japonica (Temminck et Schlegel), caught off Nanfang-ao, Taiwan was found to be parasitised by the cestode Anteropora japonica (Yamaguti, 1934). Specimens comprised whole worms and free proglottids, both of varying degrees of maturity. This material allowed for the opportunity to examine in detail the developmental progression of this hyperapolytic lecanicephalidean species with regard to overall size, scolex dimensions, and microthrix pattern. Complete immature worms ranged in size from 2.4 mm to 14 mm. The smallest scoleces were h

Many prey species have evolved collective responses to avoid predation. They rapidly transfer information about potential predators to trigger and coordinate escape waves. Predation avoidance behaviour is often manipulated by trophically transmitted parasites, to facilitate their transmission to the next host. We hypothesized that the presence of infected, behaviourally altered individuals might disturb the spread of escape waves. We used the tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus, which increases risk-taking behaviour and decreases social responsiveness of its host, the three-spined stickleback, to

Paranoplocephala omphalodes is a widespread parasite of voles. Low morphological variability within the genus Paranoplocephala has led to erroneous identification of P. omphalodes a wide range of definitive hosts. The use of molecular methods in the earlier investigations has confirmed that P. omphalodes parasitizes four vole species in Europe. We studied the distribution of P. omphalodes in Russia and Kazakhstan using molecular tools. The study of 3248 individuals of 20 arvicoline species confirmed a wide distribution of P. omphalodes. Cestodes of this species were found in Microtus arvalis,

Trophically transmitted parasites frequently increase their hosts' risk-taking behaviour, to facilitate transmission to the next host. Whether such elevated risk-taking can spill over to uninfected group members is, however, unknown. To investigate this, we confronted groups of 6 three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, containing 0, 2, 4 or 6 experimentally infected individuals with a simulated bird attack and studied their risk-taking behaviour. As a parasite, we used the tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus, which increases the risk-taking of infected sticklebacks, to facilitate trans

Immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and ultrastructural studies were conducted on a sub-population of 20 wels catfish Silurus glanis from a tributary of the River Po (Northern Italy). Fish were examined for the presence of ecto- and endo-parasites; in the intestine of 5 fish, 11 specimens of cestode Glanitaenia osculata were noted and was the only helminth species encountered. The architecture of intestine and its cellular features were nearly identical in either the uninfected S. glanis or in those harboring G. osculata. Near the site of worm's attachment, mucous cells, several mast cells
