Herpes zoster (HZ) or 'shingles' is a painful vesicular rash resulting from reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that also causes chickenpox. The incidence of HZ infection (HZI) increases with age and the degree of immunosuppresssion. Post herpetic neuralgia, the most common complication of HZ, occurs after the zoster rash has resolved. Conventional therapies include antivirals, corticosteroids and analgesics, both oral and topical. Here we report a case of HZ in an 80-year-old woman involving maxillary nerve and the article also reviews various treatment modalities available for the man…

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the association between common infectious diseases and the risk of hematological malignancies in an adult population. Data were drawn from a population based case-control study that included 165 cases (125 lymphoid and 40 myeloid neoplasms) and 233 controls. Occurrence of childhood diseases (measles, rubella, chickenpox, mumps, pertussis and scarlet fever) was slightly inversely associated with the risk of both malignancies, but statistical significance was not reached. The data of infections occurring after 14 years of age indicated an increasing …

Increasing concerns regarding smallpox as a biologic weapon have led to massive production of vaccinia vaccine and targeted vaccination campaigns. A regional mail survey was conducted among pediatricians to assess their knowledge and perceptions on smallpox and smallpox vaccine. Fifty-nine percent of the responders were unable to differentiate chickenpox from smallpox, and the majority would not accept vaccination in the absence of an outbreak and would not recommend smallpox vaccine to their patients. Even in previously vaccinated pediatricians, willingness to receive smallpox vaccine is poor…

Because of its ability to produce two clinically distinct disease entities (chickenpox and shingles), varicella zoster virus (VZV) is an unusual etiologic agent. Although in the past viral exanthems were mostly only of academic interest to the practitioner, the development of antiviral agents and the newly approved varicella (OKA) vaccine have increased the clinical significance. Also, with the increasing seroprevalence of HIV infection, more patients will be stricken with zoster (at a younger age) and disseminated varicella. In this review, the history, incidence, pathogenesis, clinical manif…

A dot ELISA was used to analyze the antibody response to varicella-zoster virus glycoproteins I, II, and III in leukemic and healthy children who either developed natural varicella or received the live attenuated varicella vaccine. Both groups of children showed an antibody response to these viral glycoproteins. The antibody response to all three glycoproteins showed excellent persistence over the 3-year period of study. None of the glycoproteins provoked an antibody response that could be shown to correlate with protection from breakthrough varicella after household exposure to chickenpox or …

Reye syndrome in siblings was seen in three of 85 families; the incidence of RS in these family groups appears to exceed that of the general population. The interval between development of RS in the first and second siblings was two to 11 days and related to the incubation period of the initial viral infection. In five of the children this infection was chickenpox and in two, an unspecified upper respiratory illness. To assess the role of genetic factors, HLA typing was performed on these siblings; a common genetic marker indicating susceptibility to RS was not identified. All families resided…

Varicella is an acute, highly contagious disease in susceptible individuals and is preventable through vaccination. This study aimed to determine the impact of varicella vaccination on hospitalizations and complications at a pediatric reference hospital in Panama before and after the vaccine introduction. This descriptive ecological study analyzed clinical records of patients diagnosed with varicella through a retrospective and interrupted time series analysis. An autoregressive integrated moving average model was built to compare the incidence rates observed after vaccination with those expec

INTRODUCTION: The varicella vaccine was first introduced into the Brazilian immunization schedule in September 2013 as a single dose for children aged 15 months. In 2018, a second dose was recommended for individuals between 4 and 6 years old. This study aims to assess the impact of routine varicella vaccination on the number and profile of hospitalized varicella patients during the single dose period, as well as in the first two years after the adoption of the second dose.
METHODS: An observational retrospective study was conducted in an infectious disease pediatric hospital, in Minas Gerais

INTRODUCTION: Vaccination against varicella rapidly reduces disease incidence, resulting in reductions in both individual burden and societal costs. Despite these benefits, there is no standardization of varicella immunization policies in Europe, including countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).
AREAS COVERED: This systematic literature review identified publications on the epidemiology of varicella, its associated health and economic burden, and vaccination strategies within the CEE region, defined as Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hun

Background: The varicella vaccine is not included in the national childhood immunization schedules in China, although one-dose varicella vaccine has been suggested for susceptible children aged 1-12 years in Jiangsu Province. However, varicella epidemics and outbreaks are frequently reported. We investigated a varicella outbreak in an elementary school to explore the risk factors for varicella transmission and vaccine failure. Methods: A 1:2 matched case-control study was carried out. Participant data were collected with standardized questionnaires. For each case, we enrolled two controls: a su

OBJECTIVE: to describe the impact of varicella vaccination on varicella-related hospitalization rates in countries that implemented universal vaccination against the disease.
DATA SOURCE: we identified countries that implemented universal vaccination against varicella at the http://apps.who.int/immunization_monitoring/globalsummary/schedules site of the World Health Organization and selected articles in Pubmed describing the changes (pre/post-vaccination) in the varicella-related hospitalization rates in these countries, using the Keywords "varicella", "vaccination/vaccine" and "children" (or

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is the first human herpesvirus to be attenuated and then approved in 1995 as a live vaccine for children. Within a few years after its administration in the United States, small outbreaks of breakthrough varicella were observed in vaccinees. Several risk factors were determined. But now a new investigation suggests another risk factor, namely, a deficiency in antibody responses to a specific individual VZV glycoprotein called gC (ORF14; gpV) in the vaccinees. Antibody concentrations to 5 VZV protein antigens were measured in children who had either wild type varice

We present the case of a 4-year-old immunocompetent girl with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that occurred 45 months after a single dose of the varicella vaccine. Varicella-zoster virus is rare in children, particularly those who have received the varicella vaccine. Our case illustrates the need for a continued high index of suspicion, even among vaccinated children with herpetiform rashes, for varicella reactivation or reinfection.

BACKGROUND: Although varicella is generally mild in children, it is often more severe in adults and overall is responsible for approximately 2000 hospital admissions each year in Australia. Live attenuated varicella vaccines have been available in Australia since 2000. They are safe and effective.
OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the role of varicella vaccination and management of varicella in pregnancy.
DISCUSSION: The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends vaccination of all children at the age of 18 months and a catch up program for nonimmune adolescents and adults. The

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The emergence of monkeypox outside its endemic region in Africa has raised significant concerns within the public health community due to its rapid global dissemination. Early clinical differentiation of monkeypox from similar diseases, such as chickenpox and measles, presents a challenge. The Monkeypox Skin Lesion Dataset (MSLD) used in this study comprises monkeypox skin lesions, which were collected primarily from publicly accessible sources. The dataset contains 770 original images captured from 162 unique patients. The MSLD includes four distinct class labels: monke…

In this research, we demonstrate a Deep Convolutional Neural Network-based classification model for the detection of monkeypox. Monkeypox can be difficult to diagnose clinically in its early stages since it resembles both chickenpox and measles in symptoms. The early diagnosis of monkeypox helps doctors cure it more quickly. Therefore, pre-trained models are frequently used in the diagnosis of monkeypox, because the manual analysis of a large number of images is labor-intensive and prone to inaccuracy. Therefore, finding the monkeypox virus requires an automated process. The large layer count …

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), and in infants, adolescents, adults, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised it can be serious. The best way to prevent chickenpox is immunization with the varicella vaccine. Protective levels of antibodies induced by the varicella vaccine decline over time, but there is currently no formal recommendation for testing anti-varicella zoster virus (VZV) IgG levels in immunized healthcare workers (HCWs).
METHODS: The aims of this study were to evaluate the seroprevalence of circulating anti-VZV IgG…
