From March to April 1992, 200 culled chickens sent to an abattoir in Tokyo, Japan were examined for the presence of growth agglutinating antibody in the serum. In the serological survey, 11 (5.5%) of 200 chicken sera had high growth agglutination titres against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, ranging from 1:16 to 1:128. These findings indicate a high rate of erysipelas infection among chickens in the field.

Systems used to measure fertility in poultry have themselves presented a major impediment to progress in maintaining or improving fertility. Generally, these systems have been time-consuming, quantitatively inadequate, or both. A simplistic illustration of the basis of the problem is that if six fertile eggs were laid by a turkey hen during 1 wk after insemination, then all we know is what happened to six sperm: they fertilized the eggs. Seven 18-wk-old pullets from a commercial layer flock experiencing increased mortality associated with neurologic and respiratory symptoms were submitted to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System at the Turlock Branch for necropsy. Clinical signs included depression, torticollis, swollen eyelids, conjunctivitis, and sinusitis. Four experiments were run to test the anticoccidial activity of dried Artemisia annua leaves and several of their chemical constituents for possible use as prophylactic feed additives. When fed over a period of 3 wk at a level of 5%, a dried leaf supplement of A. annua provided significant protection against lesions due to Eimeria tenella but not Eimeria acervulina or Eimeria maxima. The pathogenicity of Pasteurella gallinarum for mature leghorn chickens was investigated by inoculating thirty 52-week-old chickens intravenously with live P. gallinarum. Natural cases of keratoconjunctivitis, apparently caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), in layer chickens are described. The disease occurred in a commercial flock consisting of 36,000 pullets (Babcock), first appearing around 30 days of age. The virulence of Salmonella typhimurium strains for day-old chickens was examined. The mortality following oral inoculation varied from 0 to 100 per cent. Some breeds were more susceptible than others. There was no correlation between oral and parenteral virulence.
