The Effect of Chronic Azithromycin Use in Winter on Health Care Utilization for Children With Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: A Double Blind Randomized Controlled Study (RCT).

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease in preterm infants, often leads to acute respiratory exacerbations triggered by infections. Our previous mouse study suggested that azithromycin's anti-inflammatory properties may benefit virus-induced respiratory illnesses prophylactically. METHODS: In this single-center, double-blind RCT, 60 children (6 months to 6 years) with BPD received azithromycin (5 mg/kg three times weekly; n = 30) or placebo (n = 30) for one winter season (October to March). Primary outcome was the total number of days of unscheduled healthcare cli

Rehabilitation Treatment of a Child Diagnosed With Duplication of 1q42-q44: A Case Report.

Trisomy 1 is a rare chromosomal anomaly and has never been reported in Korea. Clinical features of trisomy 1 include macrocephaly, prominent forehead, flat nasal bridge, low set ears, and micrognathia, all of which result in a very distinguishable facial structure. A child with trisomy 1 also suffers from mental retardation and/or developmental delays. In this case report, the child was diagnosed with de novo trisomy 1 without receiving any treatment until visiting our hospital. The child suffered from foot and ankle deformities, leading her unable to stand independently. Here we report the su

Agreement Between Parent Proxy Report and Child Self-Report of Pain Intensity and Health-Related Quality of Life After Surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Monitoring patient-centered health outcomes after hospital discharge is important for identifying patients experiencing poor recovery after surgery. Utilizing parent reports may improve the feasibility of monitoring recovery when children are not available to provide self-report. We therefore aimed to examine agreement between parent and child reports of child pain and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children after hospital discharge from inpatient surgery. METHODS: A total of 295 children aged 8 to 18 years and their parents reported on child pain intensity using an 11-

Pulmonary tuberculosis presenting with tubercular myocarditis and shock in an adolescent child.

Involvement of the heart in children with tuberculosis (TB) generally affects the pericardium; however, the myocardium of a child being affected alone and leading to systolic heart dysfunction has rarely ever been reported. We report a case of a 12-year-old child who presented to Pediatric Emergency Services with severe hypotension (BP <5th percentile for the age) and was subsequently diagnosed with severe left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, with an ejection fraction of less than 15%. During the hospital stay, after an exhaustive workup, the child was diagnosed with pulmonary TB with tubercular

[Consequences of a bipolar disorder and use of mood stabilizers for its management during pregnancy].

UNLABELLED: For patients with a bipolar disorder who are pregnant or consider pregnancy, the following issues are of importance: Genetic counselling: genetic vulnerability is virtually certainly the basis of the occurrence of a bipolar disorder. MEDICATION: discontinuation of the medication may lead to recurrence; continuation may cause intoxications in the woman and her child and congenital anomalies in the child. Alternatives to mood stabilizers can be applied; electroconvulsive therapy is a possibility as is medication with antidepressants, antipsychotics and benzodiazepines during acute e
