Parental loss: prevalence estimates and mental health impacts from the second Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and mental health impacts of parental loss in children and adolescents under 18 years. METHOD: A nationally representative sample of households with children aged 4-17 years was recruited in 2013-2014, with 6,310 parents/carers of eligible households (response rate = 55%). Primary carers completed a questionnaire about biological parental loss (death, incarceration, separation) and mental health disorders. RESULTS: At 17 years, 0.3% had a parent in custody, 2.5% had a biological parent die, 31.8% had separated parents, and 37.8% were not living with bot

The relationship between the source of oral health information and dental caries: Findings from Child Dental Health Survey 2013 in England.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the magnitude and shape of the relationship between dental caries experience and the source of oral health information in England. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study using the Child Dental Health Survey 2013 in England. Using a negative binomial model, the relationship between the number of decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) of 12- and 15-year-old students and their primary source of oral health information was assessed. The sources of oral health information included parents, television, newspapers, the Internet, and social media. The adjusted model included

Empowering child health: Harnessing machine learning to predict acute respiratory infections in Ethiopian under-fives using demographic and health survey insights.

BACKGROUND: A dearth of studies showed that infectious diseases cause the majority of deaths among under-five children. Worldwide, Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) continues to be the second most frequent cause of illness and mortality among children under the age of five. The paramount disease burden in developing nations, including Ethiopia, is still ARI. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the magnitude and predictors of ARI among under-five children in Ethiopia using used state of the art machine learning algorithms. METHODS: Data for this study were derived from the 2016 Ethiopian

Comparing two data collection methods to track vital events in maternal and child health via community health workers in rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Timely tracking of health outcomes is difficult in low- and middle-income countries without comprehensive vital registration sys … by CHWs using two methodologies-routine data collected while delivering an integrated maternal and child health intervention, and data from a birth history census approach at the same site in rural Nepal. METHODS: We linked individual records from routine programmatic data from June 2017 to May 2018 with those from census data, both collected by CHWs at the …

Employment, health visits, mental health, and mortality in parents with a chronically ill child: a Danish nationwide population-based cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Chronic diseases in children can impact their parents; this may be overlooked in a clinical setting. Our aim was to investigate associations of chronic diseases in children with their parents' employment, health care utilization, mental health, and mortality. In a matched cohort study using nationwide and population-based data in Denmark, we included parents to children (< 18 years) with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis/juvenile idiopathic arthritis during 2008-2015. The reference group w

Evaluating patient data quality in South Africa's National Health Laboratory Service Data Warehouse, 2017-2020: implications for monitoring child health programmes.

BACKGROUND: South Africa's National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the only clinical laboratory service in the country's public health sector, is an important resource for monitoring public health programmes. OBJECTIVES: We describe NHLS data quality, particularly patient demographics among infants, and the effect this has on linking multiple test results to a single patient. METHODS: Retrospective descriptive analysis of NHLS data from 1st January 2017-1st September 2020 was performed. A validated probabilistic record-linking algorithm linked multiple results to individual patients in li

Roles of social workers and community health extension workers in enhancing access to maternal and child health services: reflection on a Nigerian intervention.

Nigeria introduced Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs to improve access to skilled care in response to persistently poor health outcomes among women and children. While existing assessments often emphasize the role of healthcare workers, the contributions of social workers and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) remain largely overlooked. This study explores the roles played by social workers and CHEWs in enhancing access to MCH services through an intervention project in Anambra State, Nigeria. An exploratory qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with five social …

Influence of Maternal Lifestyle and Child Health Practices on the Health and Nutrition of Children Under Five Years Old: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Child nutrition is crucial for a country's economic development. In Bangladesh, nearly half of the children under five suffer from malnutrition, with higher rates in rural areas. This study aims to identify factors linked to malnutrition in children in a rural area of the Mymensingh district, Bangladesh. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved face-to-face interviews with 500 mothers using a questionnaire. Data were organized in an Excel spreadsheet for bivariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: We found that 27% of children were malnourished. Bivariate analysis

Socioecological Perspectives on Healing After Child Sexual Abuse: An Application of the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework.

Children who experience childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and their non-offending family members are frequently referred to Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) for multisector service coordination and evidence-based treatments. Little is known about how interactions with the CAC model impact healing after CSA from a socioecological context (child, parent/caregiver, family). This qualitative study explored facilitators and barriers to healing after CSA within a socioecological context among families that received care at an urban Midwestern CAC. Semi-structured interviews (n = 15) were conducted with

Cumulative determinants of adolescent health indicators: the effects of social and structural determinants of health and child sexual abuse on overdose and suicide attempt.

BACKGROUND: Research has increasingly focused on the role of social and structural determinants of health (SDoH) in shaping behavioral and mental health-related outcomes, including suicide and substance use disorder. While child sexual abuse (CSA) is a well-established risk factor for these outcomes, less is known about the association with image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) and its relationship to suicide and overdose risk. Moreover, limited research has explored the interaction between abuse experiences and SDoH deficits, particularly how cumulative disadvantages may exacerbate these risks. ME

The impact of parental dental anxiety and oral health literacy on child oral health and dental-visit patterns: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the risk indicators of parental dental anxiety (PDA) and oral health literacy (OHL) can help oral healthcare professionals recognise challenges in this field. Armed with the appropriate information, they can effectively engage with parents to build trust and promote early and regular child dental visits. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between PDA and OHL with the sociobehavioural characteristics of families, self-reported child oral health (presence of ≥ 1 untreated decayed teeth) and the dental visit patterns amongst children living in Al

The role of home-visitation programs in improving health outcomes for children and families. American Academy of Pediatrics. Council on Child and Adolescent Health.

Traditional pediatric care is often based on the assumption that parents have th basic knowledge and resources to provide a nurturing, safe environment and to provide for the emotional, physical, developmental, and health care needs of their infants and young children. Unfortunately, many families have insufficient knowledge of parenting skills and an inadequate support system of friends, extended family, or professionals to help with these vital tasks. Home-visitation programs offer an effective mechanism to ensure ongoing parental education, social support, and linkage with public and privat

The fiscal sustainability of Burkina Faso's free health care policy for maternal and child health: an analysis using the fiscal space diamond.

BACKGROUND: In April 2016, Burkina Faso implemented a free maternal and child health care program. Program monitoring after the policy’s introduction showed increased stock-outs of essential drugs and supplies. The program’s outcomes could differ from those expected if financing and resources were insufficient. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the program’s fiscal sustainability by examining ways to finance its implementation effectively. METHODS: A slightly modified four-dimension definition of fiscal space was used to examine whether Burkina Faso had sufficient financial capacity to suppor…

Design and content of health facility routine data recording and reporting forms for maternal, newborn, and child health: a scoping review of literature.

BACKGROUND: High-quality routine health information systems (RHIS) are critical for improving maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), to facilitate clinical decision-making and track service delivery. Despite widespread use of health facility data forms for capturing indicators, there are no evidence-based standardized formats or content guidelines for MNCH. The aim of this scoping review was to identify, synthesize, and explore literature related to health facility data forms regarding data-element content, design, and format. METHODS: Following Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review metho…

Mapping the evidence on interventions that mitigate the health, educational, social and economic impacts of child marriage and address the needs of child brides: a systematic scoping review.

More than 650 million women alive today were married as children. Relative to efforts to prevent child marriage, efforts to support child brides have received much less attention. This review set out to map and describe interventions that support child brides. We performed a scoping review using seven electronic databases coupled with a grey literature search in January 2022. Data were extracted using a piloted extraction tool and findings were reported in narrative synthesis. A total of 34 projects were included in our review. Most projects focused on improving sexual and reproductive health

The link between hearing impairment and child maltreatment among Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory of Australia: is there an opportunity for a public health approach in child protection?

BACKGROUND: International studies provide evidence of an association between child disabilities, including hearing impairment (HI), and child maltreatment. There are high prevalences of ear disease with associated HI, and child maltreatment among Australian Aboriginal children, but the link between HI and child maltreatment is unknown. This study investigates the association between HI and child maltreatment for Aboriginal children living in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 3895 Aboriginal school-aged children (born between 1999 and 2

Web-Based Health Services in Forensic Psychiatry: A Review of the Use of the Internet in the Treatment of Child Sexual Abusers and Child Sexual Exploitation Material Offenders.

In recent years, web-based health services for a variety of mental disorders have been developed and evaluated. Evidence suggests that guided internet-based therapy can be as effective as conventional face-to-face therapy. In forensic psychiatric practice, few web-based treatments have been implemented up to now. However, to our knowledge, there do not yet exist guided internet-based treatments for child sexual abusers and child sexual exploitation material offenders. This review aims at examining under what conditions patients are most likely to benefit from internet-based treatments. In addi
