Genomic Surveillance Detection of SARS-CoV-1-Like Viruses in Rhinolophidae Bats, Bandarban Region, Bangladesh.

We sequenced sarbecovirus from Rhinolophus spp. bats in Bandarban District, Bangladesh, in a genomic surveillance campaign during 2022-2023. Sequences shared identity with SARS-CoV-1 Tor2, which caused an outbreak of human illnesses in 2003. Describing the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of reservoir pathogens can aid in identifying sources of future spillovers.

Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses unraveled critical roles of small intestine during the weaning period of Vespertilio sinensis.

BACKGROUND: Weaning represents a critical period during which mammals adapt to solid food and develop their immune systems. The intestine, as the primary digestive and immune organ, is central to successful weaning. Bats are the only flying mammals and undergo ontogenetic shifts in flight and diet in response to substantial energy and immune demands. However, the transcriptomic and metabolomic changes in bat intestines during the weaning transition remain unexplored. RESULTS: In this study, 24 small intestinal tissue samples were collected from Vespertilio sinensis across four developmental st

Bat phylogeny and geographic location, rather than bat individual characteristics, explains the pattern of trypanosome infection in Europe.

Understanding the drivers of parasite susceptibility provides valuable information, such as how parasites spread, what conditions favour their transmission, and what host characteristics make infections more likely. It can also reveal co-evolutionary dynamics and adaptation strategies between hosts and parasites. In this study, we investigated the infection patterns of several bat species across Europe by trypanosome parasites. We used phylogenetic generalised linear mixed models to investigate whether geographic location, individual characteristics (sex, body mass and body size) or species af

Nipah virus: pathogenesis, genome, diagnosis, and treatment.

The highly infectious Nipah virus (NiV) is classified under the Paramyxoviridae family and is categorized under the genus Henipavirus. NiV spreads to humans through zoonotic transmission from reservoir host bats and other intermediate hosts. It is highly contagious and has a high case fatality rate (CFR) of ~ 40-80%. Only sporadic outbreaks have been reported so far, but like SARS-CoV2, NiV has a high pandemic potential and has been put on the World Health Organization (WHO) priority pathogen list. Currently, no clinically approved antivirals, immunotherapy, or vaccines are available to tackle

Genetic Diversity and Geographic Spread of Henipaviruses.

Henipaviruses, such as Hendra and Nipah viruses, are major zoonotic pathogens that cause encephalitis and respiratory infections in humans and animals. The recent emergence of Langya virus in China highlights the need to understand henipavirus host diversity and geographic spread to prevent future outbreaks. Our analysis of the National Center for Biotechnology Information Virus and VIRION databases revealed ≈1,117 henipavirus sequences and 142 complete genomes. Bats (64.7%) and shrews (11.7%) dominated the host species record, and the genera Pteropus and Crocidura contained key henipavirus ho

Phylogenetic analysis blaTEM gene of Escherichia coli isolated from cave bats in West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The blaTEM, blaCTX-M, and blaSHV are the result of mutations in the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) enzyme, which can be seen genotypically. Wild bats have never received antibiotic therapy, and the presence of antimicrobial-resistance (AMR) in bats indicates the level of AMR in the environment, the circulation of ESBL Escherichia coli between humans or animals in Indonesia and wild animals is still not widely known. Whole genome sequencing is used to determine the circulation of ESBL Escherichia coli in detail. AIM: Our research aims to determine the genetic level of rel

Echolocating Bats Have Evolved Decreased Susceptibility to Noise-Induced Temporary Hearing Losses.

Glenis Long championed the application of quantitative psychophysical methods to understand comparative hearing abilities across species. She contributed the first psychophysical studies of absolute and masked hearing sensitivities in an auditory specialist, the echolocating horseshoe bat. Her data demonstrated that this bat has hyperacute frequency discrimination in the 83-kHz range of its echolocation broadcast. This specialization facilitates the bat's use of Doppler shift compensation to separate echoes of fluttering insects from concurrent echoes of non-moving objects. In this review, we

Species-specific SNP arrays for non-invasive genetic monitoring of a vulnerable bat.

Genetic tagging from scats is one of the minimally invasive sampling (MIS) monitoring approaches commonly used to guide management decisions and evaluate conservation efforts. Microsatellite markers have traditionally been used but are prone to genotyping errors. Here, we present a novel method for individual identification in the Threatened ghost bat Macroderma gigas using custom-designed Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) arrays on the MassARRAY system. We identified 611 informative SNPs from DArTseq data from which three SNP panels (44-50 SNPs per panel) were designed. We applied SNP geno

Europe-wide distribution and bat-host specific lineages in the malarial parasite Polychromophilus murinus revealed through genetic screening of bat flies.

Malaria parasites of the genus Polychromophilus commonly infect vespertilionid and miniopterid bats, and are transmitted by bat flies (Nycteribiidae). While Polychromophilus murinus has been recorded sporadically in Europe, its host range, distribution and phylogeographic structure have not been explored. Here we investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of P. murinus infections in 1131 bat flies collected from seven European bat species, focusing on Basilia nana, collected from its primary host, the Bechstein's bat throughout its distribution. Additionally, we explore the temporal dyna

First description of a mobatvirus (Hantaviridae) in the Amazon region.

From 1988-2023, Pará accounted for the highest proportion of deforestation among all states in the Brazilian Amazon. Specifically, 57.20 % of the territory in the Santa Bárbara municipality was deforested as of 2023. Since 2017, the Hantaviridae family has included viruses identified in nonrodent vertebrates, such as mobatviruses (from moles and bats). In the current metagenomic analysis of a pool of multiple organs of a Carollia brevicauda bat, we obtained sequences for three segments of the previously described Buritiense virus (BURV); to date, only the L segment had been sequenced for this

Assays for Detecting Henipavirus Antibodies.

While molecular detection has increasingly become the detection method of choice for infectious diseases, antibody detection remains an important approach for diagnosis and surveillance. For henipaviruses, antibody detection methods such as ELISA and Western blot played a key role in the initial discovery of bats as the natural reservoir host. Here, we will describe three additional antibody detection methods (LIPS, Luminex, and pseudovirus systems), which can be used in most BSL2 laboratories without the need for live virus and a high containment BSL4 facility.

Strategy To Assess Zoonotic Potential Reveals Low Risk Posed by SARS-Related Coronaviruses from Bat and Pangolin.

In the last 2 decades, pathogens originating in animals may have triggered three coronavirus pandemics, including the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Thus, evaluation of the spillover risk of animal severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-related coronavirus (SARSr-CoV) is important in the context of future disease preparedness. However, there is no analytical framework to assess the spillover risk of SARSr-CoVs, which cannot be determined by sequence analysis alone. Here, we established an integrity framework to evaluate the spillover risk of an animal SARSr-CoV by testing how viruses bre

Marburg virus in Egyptian Rousettus bats in Guinea: Investigation of Marburg virus outbreak origin in 2021.

In 2021, a patient died from Marburg virus (MARV) disease in Guinea and it was the first confirmed case in West Africa. The origin of the outbreak has not been identified. It was revealed that the patient didn't travel anywhere before the illness. Prior to outbreak, MARV had been found in bats in the neighboring Sierra Leone, but never in Guinea. Therefore, the origin of infection is unclear: was it an autochthonous case with spillover from a local population of bats or an imported case with spillover from fruit bats foraging/migrating from Sierra Leone? In this paper, we studied Rousettus aeg

Micro‒Global Positioning Systems for Identifying Nightly Opportunities for Marburg Virus Spillover to Humans by Egyptian Rousette Bats.

Marburg virus disease, caused by Marburg and Ravn orthomarburgviruses, emerges sporadically in sub-Saharan Africa and is often fatal in humans. The natural reservoir is the Egyptian rousette bat (ERB), which sheds virus in saliva, urine, and feces. Frugivorous ERBs discard test-bitten and partially eaten fruit, potentially leaving infectious virus behind that could be consumed by other susceptible animals or humans. Historically, 8 of 17 known Marburg virus disease outbreaks have been linked to human encroachment on ERB habitats, but no linkage exists for the other 9 outbreaks, raising the que

Effects of culling vampire bats on the spatial spread and spillover of rabies virus.

Controlling pathogen circulation in wildlife reservoirs is notoriously challenging. In Latin America, vampire bats have been culled for decades in hopes of mitigating lethal rabies infections in humans and livestock. Whether culls reduce or exacerbate rabies transmission remains controversial. Using Bayesian state-space models, we show that a 2-year, spatially extensive bat cull in an area of exceptional rabies incidence in Peru failed to reduce spillover to livestock, despite reducing bat population density. Viral whole genome sequencing and phylogeographic analyses further demonstrated that

Rickettsia and relapsing fever Borrelia in Alectorobius kelleyi (Ixodida: Argasidae) from peri domestic bats in the northeastern United States.

The soft ticks (Argasidae) are known vectors of human and animal pathogens around the globe and are relatively understudied. Our aim was to assess the presence of Rickettsia and Borrelia bacteria in Alectorobius kelleyi (Argasidae) parasitizing synanthropic bats in the highly urbanized northeastern United States. By collaborating with parasitologists, bat scientists and wildlife rehabilitators we were successful in obtaining A. kelleyi from five states. Since Argasid larvae will attach to their hosts for many days, most A. kelleyi examined (92%) were larvae collected from sick or injured big b

Genomic determinants of Furin cleavage in diverse European SARS-related bat coronaviruses.

The furin cleavage site (FCS) in SARS-CoV-2 is unique within the Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SrC) species. We re-assessed diverse SrC from European horseshoe bats and analyzed the spike-encoding genomic region harboring the FCS in SARS-CoV-2. We reveal molecular features in SrC such as purine richness and RNA secondary structures that resemble those required for FCS acquisition in avian influenza viruses. We discuss the potential acquisition of FCS through molecular mechanisms such as nucleotide substitution, insertion, or recombination, and show that a single nucleo

Rewarming rates of seven insectivorous bat species along an altitudinal gradient in South Africa.

Small endotherms commonly use daily torpor to maintain energetic homeostasis. During daily torpor, rewarming rates have a large impact on overall energy savings because they influence heat loss in this energetically costly phase of torpor. These rates are affected by both intrinsic and extrinsic ecological factors; however, data on rewarming rates along temporal and spatial scales between and within species are scant. We investigated how seven insectivorous bat species differing in body size and thermal stability of preferred roosts vary in rewarming rates along an altitude gradient (0-1400 m.

Racket or Bat Sports: No Association With Thumb-Base Osteoarthritis.

CONTEXT: Repetitive joint use is a risk factor for osteoarthritis, which is a leading cause of disability. Sports requiring a racket or bat to perform repetitive high-velocity impacts may increase the risk of thumb-base osteoarthritis. However, this hypothesis remains untested. OBJECTIVE: To determine if a history of participation in racket or bat sports was associated with the prevalence of thumb-base osteoarthritis. DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study. SETTING: Four US clinical sites associated with the Osteoarthritis Initiative. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: We recruited 2309 men

Genetic identification of bat species for pathogen surveillance across France.

With more than 1400 chiropteran species identified to date, bats comprise one-fifth of all mammalian species worldwide. Many studies have associated viral zoonoses with 45 different species of bats in the EU, which cluster within 5 families of bats. For example, the Serotine bats are infected by European Bat 1 Lyssavirus throughout Europe while Myotis bats are shown infected by coronavirus, herpesvirus and paramyxovirus. Correct host species identification is important to increase our knowledge of the ecology and evolutionary pattern of bat viruses in the EU. Bat species identification is comm…
