Trypanocidal effect of alcoholic extract of Castanedia santamartensis (Asteraceae) leaves is based on altered mitochondrial function.

The deficit of effective treatments for Chagas disease has led to searching for new substances with therapeutic potential. Natural products … sters of palmitate, as well as a group of phenolic compounds, including ferulic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, myricetin, quercitrin, and cryptochlorogenic acid were identified in the most active fractions. Kaurenoic acid and the most active fractions CS400 and CS402 collapsed the mitochondrial membrane potential in trypomastigotes, demonstrating for the fi …

Development of a high-performance liquid chromatography method for simultaneous quantification of sixteen polyphenols and application to tomato.

The main purpose of the current work was to develop a new method to evaluate and quantify sixteen polyphenol compounds from tomato fruit usi … stance 184' (1064.93 μg·g-1 DW). The main polyphenol components were rutin, quercetin, gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, 2,5-dihydroxy benzoic acid, caffeic acid and benzoic acid in tomato fruits. In conclusion, this novel HPLC method is useful and acceptable to analyze polyphenols in tomato fruit.

Structural and functional characterization of whey protein isolate-polyphenol covalent conjugates prepared via electrochemical oxidation, alkaline treatment, and free radical grafting.

Covalent conjugates of whey protein isolate (WPI) with caffeic acid (CA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), and rosmarinic acid (RA) were prepared via alkaline treatment (A), free radical grafting (F), and electrochemical oxidation (E) to investigate the effects of preparation method on their structural and functional properties. A-WPI-CGA had the highest phenolic content (61.55 ± 0.69 mg/g), A-WPI-RA showed the lowest free sulfhydryl group content (2.96 ± 0.13 μmol/g), and F-WPI-CGA showed the highest amino group consumption (316.46 ± 6.47 μmol/g). The A-WPI-polyphenol and E-WPI-polyphenol conjugates e…

Kinetical approach of release and antioxidant performances of ι-carrageenan-based films modified by sodium alginate and Ca2+ and incorporating sea fennel essential oil and its major components.

Understanding whether antioxidant efficiency in active films is governed by release kinetics or intrinsic radical-scavenging reactivity remains insufficiently explored in hydrophilic biopolymer networks. This study investigates the coupling between release mechanisms and antioxidant reaction kinetics in ι-carrageenan-based films loaded with bioactive (chlorogenic acidor d-limoneneor sea fennel essential oil) to evaluate their release behavior and antioxidant activity. Release experiments were conducted in food simulant D1 (50% ethanol) over 48 h, while antioxidant activity (AA%) was monitored …

The thermal degradation of glucomoringin and changes of phenolic compounds in moringa seed kernels during different degrees of roasting.

The effect of heat treatment on the abundant bioactive compounds in moringa seed kernels (MSKs) during different degrees of roasting remains sparingly explored despite the flour of roasted MSKs has been incorporated into the human diet (e.g., cakes, cookies, and burgers) as a substitute to enrich the nutritional content. Therefore, we investigated the impacts of different roasting conditions (e.g., temperature and duration) on bioactive compounds (e.g., glucosinolates (GSLs), phenolic acids and alkaloids) and antioxidant capacity of MSKs. Our results showed that light and medium roasting incre
