The choroid plexus is the secretory tissue responsible for cerebrospinal fluid production in the brain. Ischemia of the choroid plexus is rare because of its abundant blood supply from multiple arterial systems, including the anterior and posterior choroidal arterial anastomoses. It is not clear under what circumstances isolated choroid plexus infarction occurs. A 56-year-old woman presented to our hospital after experiencing several episodes of paroxysmal dizziness and weakness in her right upper extremity that lasted several hours. She had a 10-year history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus…

The choroid plexus (ChP) is part of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, regulating brain homeostasis and the brain's response to peripheral events. Its upregulation and enlargement are considered essential in psychosis. However, the timing of the ChP enlargement has not been established. This study introduces a novel magnetic resonance imaging-based segmentation method to examine ChP volumes in two cohorts of individuals with psychosis. The first sample consists of 41 individuals with early course psychosis (mean duration of illness = 1.78 years) and 30 healthy individuals. The second sampl…

The choroid plexus (CP) plays central roles in regulating the microenvironment of the central nervous system by secreting the majority of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and controlling its composition. A monolayer of epithelial cells of CP plays a significant role in forming the blood-CSF barrier to restrict the movement of substances between the blood and ventricles. CP epithelial cells are equipped with transporters for glucose and lactate that are used as energy sources. There are many review papers on glucose transporters in CP epithelial cells. On the other hand, distribution of monocarboxylat…

The choroid plexus has been implicated in neurodevelopment and a range of brain disorders. Evidence demonstrates that the choroid plexus is critical for brain maturation, immune/ inflammatory regulation, and behavioral/cognitive functioning. However, current automated neuroimaging segmentation tools are poor at accurately and reliably segmenting the lateral ventricle choroid plexus. Furthermore, there is no existing tool that segments the choroid plexus located in the third and fourth ventricles of the brain. Thus, a protocol delineating how to segment the choroid plexus in the lateral, third,…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The choroid plexus (CP) clears harmful metabolites from the central nervous system as part of the glymphatic system. We investigated the association of CP volume (CPV) with baseline and longitudinal cognitive decline in patients with Parkinson disease (PD).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 240 patients with newly diagnosed PD who had undergone detailed neuropsychological tests and high-resolution T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging during the initial assessment. The CPV of each patient was automatically segmented, and the intrac…

Although choroid plexus cysts are a frequent incidental neuroimaging finding, symptomatic ones are rare-a series of more than five cases are hard to find. In the absence of high-volume studies, there are no generally accepted algorithms for diagnosis and treatment for this pathology. Proposed surgical techniques include microsurgical excision or fenestration and endoscopic excision or fenestration with or without additional shunting. No definitive conclusions exist about the superiority of a certain technique. Here, we introduce an illustrative case of a patient with a symptomatic choroid plex…

The choroid plexus (CP), located in each of the four ventricles of the brain, is formed by a monolayer of epithelial cells that surrounds a highly vascularized connective tissue with permeable capillaries. These cells are joined by tight junctions forming the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB), which strictly regulates the exchange of substances between the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The primary purpose of the CP is to secrete CSF, but it also plays a role in the immune surveillance of the central nervous system (CNS) and in the removal of neurotoxic compounds from the CSF. Ac…

Choroid plexus tumors are rare pediatric neoplasms ranging from low-grade papillomas to overtly malignant carcinomas. They are commonly associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome and germline TP53 mutations. Choroid plexus carcinomas associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome are less responsive to chemotherapy, and there is a need to avoid radiation therapy leading to poorer outcomes and survival. Malignant progression from choroid plexus papillomas to carcinomas is exceedingly rare with only a handful of cases reported, and the molecular mechanisms of this progression remain elusive. We report a case of…

We present a rare prenatal diagnosis of bilateral choroid plexus papillomas by obstetrical ultrasound and fetal MRI at 20 weeks 6 days gestation. The fetus demonstrated bilateral enlarged, echogenic choroid plexus with increased Doppler flow suggestive of vascularized choroid tissue. Same-day fetal MRI demonstrated that the choroid plexus appeared enlarged bilaterally without definite hemorrhage. The combined features on ultrasound and MRI suggested bilateral choroid plexus papillomas with increased cerebrospinal fluid production, leading to ventriculomegaly and enlarged extra-axial spaces. Th…

The choroid plexus (ChP) produces cerebrospinal fluid and forms an essential brain barrier. ChP tissues form in each brain ventricle, each one adopting a distinct shape, but remarkably little is known about the mechanisms underlying ChP development. Here, we show that epithelial WNT5A is crucial for determining fourth ventricle (4V) ChP morphogenesis and size in mouse. Systemic Wnt5a knockout, or forced Wnt5a overexpression beginning at embryonic day 10.5, profoundly reduced ChP size and development. However, Wnt5a expression was enriched in Foxj1-positive epithelial cells of 4V ChP plexus, an…

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of in-vivo imaging of the retina and choroid using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in guinea pigs. Methods: The study included 19 pigmented guinea pigs (age: 3-4 weeks) which underwent sonographic axial length measurements and OCT imaging. At study end, the animals were sacrificed and histomorphometric examinations of the retina and choroid were performed. We assessed the reproducibility of the OCT measurements and compared in-vivo measurements to histomorphometric data. Results: The mean thickness of the retina and choroid near the optic…

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a crucial role in all parts of the eye, from maintaining clarity and hydration of the cornea and vitreous to regulating angiogenesis, intraocular pressure maintenance, and vascular signaling. This review focuses on the interactions of the ECM for homeostasis of normal physiologic functions of the cornea, vitreous, retina, retinal pigment epithelium, Bruch's membrane, and choroid as well as trabecular meshwork, optic nerve, conjunctiva and tenon's layer as it relates to glaucoma. A variety of pathways and key factors related to ECM in the eye are discussed, …

There is only limited information available on the effects of physical exercise on the posterior pole. Retinal circulation is autoregulated similarly to the brain vasculature in order to provide constant flow and thus constant nutrition of the inner retinal structures while the choroid is mostly controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. The available data show that physical exercise may indeed have a positive effect on the retina and visual function. The assessment of retinal structure could serve as a marker in sports medicine, whereas physical activity could exert a positive protective e…

The choroid plexus (CP) plays a major role in controlling the entry of substances and immune cells into the brain as it forms the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) in the brain ventricles. Dysregulated immune cell trafficking through the epithelial cell (EC) layer of CP is central for the pathogenesis of infectious diseases in the brain and many neurodegenerative disorders. In vitro studies elucidating the function of the CP have so far been limited to the monolayer culture of CP ECs. To mimic immune cell migration across the CP barrier, a three-dimensional model would be advantageous.…
