Pancreastatin is a 49 amino acid peptide first isolated, purified and characterized from the porcine pancreas, and whose biological activity in different tissues can be assigned to the C-terminal part of the molecule. Pancreastatin has a prohormonal precursor, chromogranin A (CGA), which is a glycoprotein present in neuroendocrine cells, including the endocrine pancreas. Both intracellular and extracellular processing of CGA can yield pancreastatin. This processing is tissue-specific, with the pancreatic islet and antral gastric endocrine cells being the major source of fully processed pancrea

Enterochromaffin cells in the duodenal mucosa were stained by using a monoclonal antibody against serotonin immunoreactive sites and an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. A semi-automatic image analysing system showed increased numbers of these cells in patients with untreated coeliac disease compared with a control group. The number of serotonin positive granules in individual enterochromaffin cells also seemed to be increased in patients with coeliac disease, a finding which may be related to the pathogenesis of this disorder.

A pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor that develops from adrenomedullary chromaffin cells and produce ones or more catecholamines, including adrenaline, norepinephrine, and dopamine. On rare occasions a pheochromocytoma is hormonally inactive. Cyanotic heart disease is also a relatively rare pathology. One of its least frequently occurring variants is the single ventricle of the heart. Presumably, in patients with cyanotic heart defects, the occurrence of pheochromocytes and paragangliomas will be higher due to the presence of certain germinative and somatic mutations. In cyanotic heart defects, …

Mucinous tumors of the ovary and adenocarcinomas of the female genital tract with or without argyrophil cells were studied by immunohistology for mucous antigens. These were isolated from intestinal mucosa and ovarian mucinous cyst fluid. Mucous antigen, M1 which is primarily associated with ovarian mucinous cystadenoma, was found in all mucinous tumors of the ovary, adenocarcinoma of the cervix, and endometrium. Intestinal mucous antigen (IMA), which is specific for goblet cells of the normal intestinal mucosa, was detected only in a few mucinous tumors of the ovary, with or without argyrophi

Recent achievements of gastrointestinal endocrinology on the basis of new techniques enabled investigation of endocrine cells in pathological conditions. The present paper describes investigations of 56 surgical cases of the stomachs operated on for duodenal and gastric ulcer and gastric cancer. Argyrophilic cell hyperplasia was common in non-metaplastic antropyloric mucosa in duodenal ulcer cases, not so common, however, in gastric ulcer and gastric cancer. In metaplastic mucosa enterochromaffin (EC) cells predominated. Intestinal metaplasia appeared to be the most significant factor influenc

We observed Na, K, and Cl voltage-dependent currents in a patch-clamp study of mouse brain astrocytes. In whole-cell recordings, depolarizat … f K channels were observed at steady depolarized potentials. They resembled the K channels found in chromaffin cells by Marty and Neher (1985). Large conductance channels (385 pS) activated around 0 mV were identified as Cl channels.

The use of neural transplantation or cellular therapies for Parkinson's disease (PD) is based on the idea of substituting nigral dopaminergic neurons lost as a consequence of the degenerative process. More than 400 people with PD have received a transplant with highly variable results. Success of cellular therapy depends on the survival of a sufficient number of trasplanted dopaminergic cells and on the restoration of normal striatal circuitry, disrupted by the disease process. None of the currently used cellular sources can generate an unlimited number of dopaminergic cells. Stem cells (SC) a

The carotid body (CB) chemoreflex maintains blood Po2 and Pco2/H+ homeostasis and displays sensory plasticity during exposure to chronic hypoxia. Purinergic signaling via P1 and P2 receptors plays a pivotal role in shaping the afferent discharge at the sensory synapse containing catecholaminergic chemoreceptor (type I) cells, glial-like type II cells, and sensory (petrosal) nerve endings. However, little is known about the family of ectonucleotidases that control synaptic nucleotide levels. Using quantitative PCR (qPCR), we first compared expression levels of ectonucleoside triphosphate diphos

We found a reduced number of exocytosis events in chromaffin cells and a slowing of endocytosis in neurons. Endosome size was increased in neurons and NGF levels were reduced in the septal region of the brain. Our data is the first indication that Itsn1 has a role in endocytosis in an in vivo mammalian model, and t …

Pheochromocytoma is a rare, primarily benign tumor that arises from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. It is known for causing excessive secretion of catecholamines, such as epinephrine and norepinephrine. This condition poses significant health risks due to its potential to cause severe cardiovascular complications, including hypertension, stroke, and various forms of cardiomyopathy. A 29-year-old woman with a history of diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension presented with symptoms suggestive of an infection related to an intrauterine device (IUD). However, persistent symptoms fol…

We present a case report detailing the surgical management of a cardiac paraganglioma in a 57-year-old man with a succinate dehydrogenase subunit B mutation and family history of paragangliomas. These neuroendocrine tumours arise from chromaffin cells and account for less than 3% of cardiac tumours. Succinate dehydrogenase subunit B mutations are associated with aggressive disease patterns and require a multidisciplinary approach for optimal management. The patient had multifocal disease involving the neck, abdomen and heart, yet was asymptomatic aside from a palpable neck mass. Positron emiss…

Paragangliomas/pheochromocytomas are uncommon neuroendocrine tumors that arise from chromaffin cells located outside of the adrenal gland. Although cardiac paragangliomas have been observed in all heart chambers, the most prevalent are left-atrial paragangliomas, followed by aortic body tumors. Diagnosis of paragangliomas/pheochromocytomas is mostly achieved with a multimodality approach because of her clinical presentation ranging from incidental findings to refractory acute heart dysfunction. The role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support in the early management and diagnosis of une…

Ewing sarcomas (EWS) are highly malignant neoplasms of mesenchymal origin that are rare in the head and neck. Only a few laryngeal EWS have been reported in the literature. We report a 47 years-old man who visited our hospital for medical help after 5 months of hoarseness and sore throat. Computed tomography (CT) showed uneven thickening of the epiglottis fold, right vocal cord, and anterior union. In addition, fluoro-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET)/CT has confirmed high activity in the already known laryngeal and nodal lesions, and has revealed otherwise unkno

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas (PGL) are neuroendocrine tumors arising from neural crest-derived chromaffin cells in the parasympathetic ganglia or in sympathetic ganglia located in the adrenal glands (Pheochromocytoma, PHEO), or extra-adrenal location and around 30-40% of PGL can be hereditary (MEN2, Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, von Reklingausen syndrome and Pheochromocytoma-Paraganglioma syndrome).
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluate 127 patients with PHEO/PGL treated at our Institution from 1992 to 2018 and report our experience, focusing on different surgical treatment based on hereditary syn…

Paragangliomas (PGLs) arise from chromaffin cells of the extra-adrenal sites along the sympathetic and/or the parasympathetic chain. Majority of the PGLs occur in the abdomen. When retroperitoneal PGLs produce symptoms of compression or invasion of adjacent organs, they could be misdiagnosed as a tumor of adjacent organs. Here, we report a rare case of ureteral obstruction caused by an extra-adrenal retroperitoneal PGL that mimicked a ureteral tumor. A 46-year-old female presented with a 2-year history of hypertension. Routine laboratory tests were unremarkable. The computed tomography (CT) sc…

Pheochromocytoma (PCC) is a tumor derived from adrenomedullary chromaffin cells. Prognosis of malignant PCC is generally poor due to local recurrence or metastasis. We aim to report a case of malignant PCC with 18-year survival and discuss which factors may be related to mortality and long-term survival in malignant pheochromocytoma. The patient, a 45-year-old man, reported sustained arterial hypertension with paroxysmal episodes of tachycardia, associated with head and neck burning sensation, and hand and foot tremors. Diagnosis of PCC was established biochemically and a tumor with infiltrati…

BACKGROUND: Pheochromocytomas are catecholamine secreting tumors of the adrenal medulla chromaffin cells, however, when present extra-adrenally they are called paragangliomas. Paragangliomas rarely produce catecholamine in excess, which is evident by clinical symptoms, urine, and blood biochemistry. Total resection of these tumors can lead to complete clinical and biochemical resolution. This case report presents the clinical features, radiological findings, and neurological outcome in a middle-aged female with a secretory paraganglioma.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 34-year-old …
