Residual samples of blood spots, which are routinely collected on almost all newborns in the United States, can be used to determine seroprevalence information on newborns and maternal exposures to various substances, including drugs of abuse. By modifying a commercial radioimmunoassay (RIA) kit for urinary samples, one can use blood spotted on filter paper as a matrix to quantitate the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine (BE). This paper reports a method for determining the carbonation rate (CR) of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) during carbonation process based on headspace gas chromatography technique. The method was carried out by simultaneously detecting the signal values of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Homocystinuria was diagnosed in 15 (0.59%) cases on screening 2560 children for aminoacidopathies. The commonest presenting features were ectopia lentis (95%) and mental retardation (86%). Other features included, dental anomalies (40%), osteoporosis (40%), behavioral problems (33%) and arachnodactyly (13%). BACKGROUND: The concentrations of the pyrimidine "de novo" metabolites and their degradation products in urine are useful indicators for the diagnosis of an inborn error of the pyrimidine de novo pathway or a urea-cycle defect. Until now, no procedure was available that allowed the analysis of all of these metabolites in a single analytical run. We describe a rapid, specific method to measure these metabolites by HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry.
METHODS: Urine or urine-soaked filter-paper strips were used to measure N-carbamyl-aspartate, dihydroorotate, orotate, orotidine, uridine, and uracil.

Plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) purified from human placenta was compared to PAI purified from conditioned cell culture fluid of the human fibrosarcoma cell line HT-1080.
