Classifications and imaging of juvenile spondyloarthritis.

Juvenile spondyloarthritis may be present in at least 3 subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis according to the classification of the International League of Associations for Rheumatology. By contrast with spondyloarthritis in adults, juvenile spondyloarthritis starts with inflammation of peripheral joints and entheses in the majority of children, whereas sacroiliitis and spondylitis may develop many years after the disease onset. Peripheral joint involvement makes it difficult to differentiate juvenile spondyloarthritis from other juvenile idiopathic arthritis subtypes. Sacroiliitis, and e…

[Classification and treatment of syndesmotic injury].

The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis is a critical structure in maintaining the ankle stability. Syndesmotic injuries are usually associated with ankle fractures and high fibula fractures. Non-isolated and partially isolated syndesmotic injuries are involved in unstable injuries, which need to operative treatment. Partially isolated syndesmotic injuries belong to stable injuries, which should be treated with non-operative management. It is becoming clear that early fixation and stabilization for unstable injuries are probably better than non-treatment or delayed treatment. It still remains with

Radiographic classifications in Perthes disease.

Background and purpose - Different radiographic classifications have been proposed for prediction of outcome in Perthes disease. We assessed whether the modified lateral pillar classification would provide more reliable interobserver agreement and prognostic value compared with the original lateral pillar classification and the Catterall classification. Patients and methods - 42 patients (38 boys) with Perthes disease were included in the interobserver study. Their mean age at diagnosis was 6.5 (3-11) years. 5 observers classified the radiographs in 2 separate sessions according to the Cattera…

Classification of meningiomas-advances and controversies.

Meningiomas are the most frequent primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Although approximately 80% of the tumors are slow growing and benign, some subtypes are associated with a less favorable outcome. An adequate classification system aims at providing a tool for estimating recurrence and overall survival of meningioma patients. The 2016 version of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification for CNS tumors constitutes a hallmark for neuropathological tumor classification since genetic alterations and histopathology are combined for a final diagnosis. Although this mainly applies…

Pathophysiology and classification of pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Background: The term pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) was first described in 1884 and there has been much debate since then over the term. A recent consensus of world experts agreed that PMP should be thought of as a clinical entity characterised by the presence of mucinous ascites, omental cake, peritoneal implants and possibly ovarian involvement. It generally originates from mucinous appendiceal tumours. Content: This review details the clinical presentation of this unusual condition, presents the new classification system and how this relates to outcome. The pathophysiology of this disease is …

Classification and definition of premature ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a poorly understood condition and is considered as the most common sexual disorder in men. The ambiguity surrounding PE is in part due to the difficulty in conducting and interpreting research in the absence of a standardised definition that adequately encompasses the characteristics of these patients. An enhanced awareness of sexual dysfunctions in the recent decades has lead to an increase in scientific research that has challenged the traditional paradigm regarding PE. This has also enabled to establish a universal definition and classification of the disease. …

Higher classification and phylogeny of Euglenozoa.

Discoveries of numerous new taxa and advances in ultrastructure and sequence phylogeny (including here the first site-heterogeneous 18S rDNA trees) require major improvements to euglenozoan higher-level taxonomy. I therefore divide Euglenozoa into three subphyla of substantially different body plans: Euglenoida with pellicular strips; anaerobic Postgaardia (class Postgaardea) dependent on surface bacteria and with uniquely modified feeding apparatuses; and new subphylum Glycomonada characterised by glycosomes (Kinetoplastea, Diplonemea). Euglenoida comprise two new infraphyla: Entosiphona with

Amended Classification of the Open Abdomen.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, a classification system for the open abdomen was introduced. The aim of such a classification is to aid the (1) description of the patient's clinical course; (2) standardization of clinical guidelines for guiding open abdomen management; and (3) facilitation of comparisons between studies and heterogeneous patient populations, thus serving as an aid in clinical research. METHODS: As part of the revision of the definitions and clinical guidelines performed by the World Society of the Abdominal Compartment Syndrome, this 2009 classification system was amended following a re…

A New Classification for the Varus Knee.

BACKGROUND: A new classification for osteoarthritis of the knee associated with varus deformity is presented. This classification is derived from the combination of conventional radiographs, stress radiographs (when needed), and clinical examination. METHODS: This study included the analysis of coronal alignment on full-leg standing radiographs of 526 patients awaiting knee arthroplasty for varus deformity in a single institution. Various mechanical and anatomic angles were measured, and these findings were combined with a basic clinical examination of patients. The radiographs were measured …

The Prevalence and Classification of the Cystoduodenal Ligament.

Variant patterns of peritoneal folds could be formed due to the complex nature of the embryology of the peritoneum and the gastrointestinal tract. When uncommon peritoneal folds are formed, they could influence aberrant formation of surrounding gastrointestinal structures and create spaces that may harbour peritoneal fluids in cases of infection or malignant tumor. One of such variant peritoneal folds is the cystoduodenal ligament which is a doubled peritoneal membrane attaching the gallbladder to the duodenum. Yet no study was found that had reported the frequency of occurrence of the cystodu

Classification and Management of Pancreatic Pseudocysts.

This article aims to elucidate the classification of and optimal treatment for pancreatic pseudocysts. Various approaches, including endoscopic drainage, percutaneous drainage, and open surgery, have been employed for the management of pancreatic pseudocysts. However, no scientific classification of pancreatic pseudocysts has been devised, which could assist in the selection of optimal therapy. We evaluated the treatment modalities used in 893 patients diagnosed with pancreatic pseudocysts according to the revision of the Atlanta classification in our department between 2001 and 2010. All the …

Classification of hemopericardium on postmortem CT.

Postmortem CT (PMCT) is increasingly used in forensic practice, and knowledge and classification of typical hemopericardium on PMCT would help to assure correct radiological interpretation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the pericardial and pleural space fluid volumetry, and to evaluate the signs on PMCT pointing to cardiac tamponade as the cause of death, and their pitfalls. Fourteen cadavers (eleven male, three female, 49-87 [mean, 70.9] years) were examined by PMCT. The pericardial volume and pericardial findings with/without pleural space fluid collection were compared with autopsy…

Synpolydactyly of the hand: a radiographic classification.

UNLABELLED: Synpolydactyly is an uncommon congenital anomaly characterized by polydactyly with syndactyly in the central hand. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and assess the reliability of a radiographic classification system for synpolydactyly. We identified 56 hands with central synpolydactyly and developed a radiographic classification system that categorizes by the location within the hand, the bony level of polydactyly, and the presence of a delta phalanx. Four paediatric hand surgeons independently reviewed each radiograph to establish reliability. There was exact agreem…
