Enterobacter cloacae (n = 110) isolates from a district hospital in Taiwan were screened for extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). In total, 17 ESBL-producers were identified, based on the combination-disk synergy test using cefotaxime and ceftazidime +/- clavulanic acid. Annually 50,000 to 100,000 animal bites are seen by physicians in the Netherlands. Infections of these bite wounds frequently occur. Pasteurella multocida is one of the main causes of these infections and many serious complications may occur. We present 3 patients with disturbances in wound healing after animal bites or scratches due to infection with P. multocida. This paper reports the results of a pilot study which examined factors associated with chest infection following head and neck surgery. The overall rate of chest infection was 11%, but was 20% in those patients having a tracheotomy. No infection developed in patients with an intact airway. Other factors which emerged as possibly important were the duration of surgery and heavy regular alcohol intake. Our study was initiated by previous isolation of 30 imipenem-resistant, gram-negative rods from 7 of 16 U.S. rivers sampled from 1999 to 2001. Imipenem hydrolysis was detected in 22 of those isolates identified as Enterobacter asburiae.
