Advancing real-time coastal data monitoring: Bio-optical property analysis (chlorophyll-a and TSM) in the Northern Bay of Bengal using Sentinel-3 OLCI, IRS Oceansat-3, and artificial neural networks.

Monitoring bio-optical attributes in estuarine environments is crucial for understanding ecosystem productivity, sediment dynamics, and climate-induced hydrological changes. This research introduces an integrated multi-sensor and machine learning approach to assess the spatiotemporal variability of Chl-a and TSM within the Northern Bay of Bengal. In-situ data gathered during pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons were integrated with satellite observations from Sentinel-3 OLCI and Oceansat-3 OCM to investigate seasonal trends and to train ANN models for enhanced parameter retrieval. Enhancing vulnerability assessment through spatially explicit modeling of mountain social-ecological systems exposed to multiple environmental hazards.

The evaluation of the vulnerability of coupled socio-ecological systems is critical for addressing and preventing the adverse impacts of various environmental hazards and devising strategies for climate change adaptation. The initial step in vulnerability assessment involves exposure assessment, which entails quantifying and mapping the risks posed by multiple environmental hazards, thereby offering valuable insights for the implementation of vulnerability assessment methodologies. Consequently, this study sought to model the exposure of coupled social-ecological systems in mountainous regions

Impact of exposure to extreme heat events during pregnancy on the incidence of congenital heart disease in offspring: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of congenital heart disease (CHD) is multifactorial. Environmental risk factors have emerged as an important modifiable determinant of several congenital cardiac conditions. Previous studies have shown a strong relationship between CHD and air pollution. Much less is known about the influence of ambient temperature on CHD. The primary objective of this meta-analysis was to examine the association between exposure to extreme heat events (EHE) during pregnancy and CHD in the offspring. METHODS: comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases su

Parallel prediction of dengue cases with different risks in Mexico using an artificial neural network model considering meteorological data.

In 2022, Mexico registered an increase in dengue cases compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the amount of precipitation reported annually was slightly less than the previous year. Similarly, the minimum-mean-maximum temperatures recorded annually were below the previous year. In the literature, it is possible to find studies focused on the spread of dengue only for some specific regions of Mexico. However, given the increase in the number of cases during 2022 in regions not considered by previously published works, this study covers cases reported in all states of the country. On

Better sturdy or slender? Eurasian otter skull plasticity in response to feeding ecology.

Otters are semi-aquatic mammals specialized in feeding on aquatic prey. The Eurasian otter Lutra lutra is the most widely distributed otter species. Despite a low degree of genetic variation across its European range, the population from Great Britain exhibits distinct genetic structuring. We examined 43 skulls of adult Eurasian otters belonging to 18 sampling localities and three genetic clusters (Shetlands, Wales and Scotland). For each sample location, information regarding climate was described using bioclimatic variables from WorldClim, and information on otter diet was extracted from the

GEDI canopy cover assessment using airborne LiDAR across eco-climate regions of the United States.

Information about woody plant density and canopy cover is central to our definition of terrestrial ecosystem types and crucial for understanding ecosystem state, dynamics, biogeochemical processes, and biodiversity. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR on the International Space Station (ISS) samples 3-D structural information on woody vegetation structure, including an estimate of canopy cover in each 25 m diameter footprint. This study presents an evaluation of the GEDI fractional canopy cover estimates by comparing GEDI retrievals to high-resolution airborne laser scanni

A field-deployable CRISPR-based biosensing platform for monitoring marine ecosystems.

Ocean ecosystems are undergoing accelerating disruption from human impacts such as climate change. Warming ocean temperatures drive pathogenic outbreaks, increase harmful algal blooms, and cause coral stress. These can have serious consequences for marine ecosystems, human health and the aquaculture industry, representing a critical One Health issue. Monitoring key marine species offers valuable insights, but current methods are resource-intensive, low-resolution, and unsuitable for frequent deployment. Here, we introduce a low-cost, field-deployable CRISPR biosensing platform for detecting ma

The tale of two seas -The Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea regarding clinically important fungi.

Seawater and freshwater of rivers or lakes and their surrounding sand or soil have been shown to harbour bacteria and fungi. Among these microorganisms, the fungi of clinical interest can impact human health in various ways, posing an important risk to public health. In this article, we will present data of a 2-year survey of fungal contamination of seawater and sand on multiple beaches from Romania and Israel, and discuss the possible effects of the various climatic factors with respect to the mycobiota found in the two sites: the Black Sea versus the Mediterranean Sea. The samples were colle

Climate and Edaphic Factors Partly Explain Leaf Litterfall Rates of Species From Tropical Semi-Deciduous Ecosystems.

Carbon cycling in semi-deciduous ecosystems is difficult to observe because plant species shed leaves for only a short period (4-6 weeks), and some remain dormant for only a few weeks. These short phenological phases limit ecosystem studies. To our knowledge, no database currently describes spatial and temporal patterns of litterfall in semi-deciduous ecosystems. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors associated with leaf litterfall rates in these ecosystems. We compiled leaf litterfall data from 31 global semi-deciduous sites in the literature and collected climatic data (precipitati

Wildfire-Altered Soil Water-Extractable Organic Matter Drives Divergent Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Anaerobic Subsurface Soils.

Intensifying global climate change has increased wildfire frequency. Wildfire-altered soil water-extractable organic matter (burned-WEOM) is hydrologically transported to unburned areas, profoundly affecting cross-ecosystem carbon-nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Taking soils from unburned subtropical forests as the research object, this study combined anaerobic incubation with high-resolution mass spectrometry and metagenomic sequencing to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of burned-WEOM on soil GHG emissions under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that burned-WEO

Nitrogen Addition Regulates the Temperature Sensitivity of Soil Carbon Release via Microbial Properties.

The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil carbon (C) release is a key parameter for evaluating soil C stability under climate warming, with particular importance in high-latitude regions that are highly vulnerable to rising temperatures. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which nitrogen (N) addition modulates the temperature sensitivity of soil C release remain insufficiently understood. Here, we collected soils from a long-term N addition experiment in a high-latitude boreal forest and conducted controlled incubations to assess how N addition influences soil CO2 release and its temperature sensi

Regulatory Responses of Ectothermic Embryos to Predicted Heat Stresses Under Near-Future Climate Change.

Heat stress can disrupt coordinated regulatory processes underpinning normal development, resulting in embryonic malformation and inviability. Embryonic buffering against thermal challenge may therefore play a crucial role in individual survival and population resilience under heat stress. Yet, the molecular mechanisms underpinning embryonic defence against ecologically-meaningful heat stresses remain poorly understood. We investigated the regulatory responses of brown anole (Anolis sagrei) embryos to three patterns of heat stress we find will increase under near-future climate warming. Across

The potential of syngas as a central mediator for a carbon-agnostic circular economy.

Carbon is the foundation of life and industrial production, but the current use of fossil-based carbon in a linear economy leads to climate breakdown with global ecological consequences. To mitigate the effects of the climate catastrophe, transitioning from a fossil-based linear economy to a circular carbon economy requires scalable strategies that do not compete with arable land resources. Accordingly, processes for the utilization of waste streams from various sources including CO2 must be established to enable circularity. Here, we propose synthesis gas (syngas; CO, H2 and CO2) as a univers

From anxiety to innovation: the effect of perceived involution on digital creativity via the parallel mediation of relative deprivation and constructive deviance.

INTRODUCTION: Against the backdrop of enterprise digital transformation, the increasing displacement of routine roles by technology has intensified workplace competition. This has led to persistently heightened pressure and induced anxiety among employees in a highly competitive environment. Such pressure and anxiety have progressively evolved into a psychological state characterized by diminishing returns cognition and development prospect anxiety, namely, perceived involution, which subsequently affects employees' willingness to apply and innovate in digital technology. METHODS: This study

Molecular mechanisms of WRKY transcription factors integrating environmental signals to regulate flowering time in brassica crops.

Flowering time is a critical developmental process that directly influences reproductive success, environmental adaptation, and agricultural productivity in Brassica crops. Recent climate instability, including drought, temperature fluctuations, salinity, and irregular photoperiods, has intensified the need to understand the molecular mechanisms regulating flowering adaptation. WRKY transcription factors are key integrators of flowering time. They connect environmental cues, hormone networks, and circadian rhythms to floral regulator genes. This review summarizes the structural, evolutionary,

Biological responses to heat stress in livestock: From thermoregulation to cellular and epigenetic adaptation.

Climate change driven increases in ambient temperature have positioned heat stress (HS) as a major biological constraint on livestock productivity and welfare. Excessive thermal load disrupts thermoregulatory balance, reduces feed intake and digestive efficiency, and perturbs immune and endocrine function, culminating in impaired energy metabolism and systemic dysfunction. Reproductive processes show pronounced thermal sensitivity, as HS alters hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis signaling, compromises gametogenesis, reduces embryo viability, and suppresses fertility. Productive traits, includ

Estimation of postmortem submersion interval using total aquatic decomposition scores of human cadavers from Punjab.

Estimation of the postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) using total aquatic decomposition scores (TADS) has shown considerable promise in recent forensic research. Since decomposition is a time- and temperature-dependent process, the Accumulated Degree Day (ADD) of water has been linked with TADS to improve the accuracy of PMSI estimations. Expanding research across diverse geographical areas and aquatic environments (lentic, lotic, freshwater, and saltwater) is essential to enhance the reliability and applicability of scoring methods. This study analyzed 50 cases from different districts of P
