Cognitive Complaints and Their Impact on Daily Life in Patients with Degenerative Cerebellar Disorders.

Cognitive and affective sequelae of cerebellar disease are receiving increased attention, but their actual rate of occurrence remains unclear. Complaints may have a significant impact on patients, affecting social behavior and psychological well-being. This study aims to explore the extent of subjective cognitive and affective symptoms in patients with degenerative ataxias in the Netherlands. An explorative study was set up in a heterogeneous group of degenerative ataxia patients. Self-reported cognition was evaluated in terms of executive functioning and affect (Dysexecutive Questionnaire/DEX

Cognitive clinical intervention in a patient with schizoid personality disorder: Case report.

The present case report describes a 19-year-old male patient whose main symptoms were emotional coldness, absence of close relationships, difficulty experiencing pleasure with other people, and lack of motivation to work or to continue his studies. A schizoid personality disorder was diagnosed as a product of early maladaptive patterns such as inhibition, emotional deprivation, social isolation, and inadequacy. Likewise, a rigid and fragmented family context was evidenced, with an affective absence of parents and a focus on strict behavioral rules. The study aimed to intervene, from a cognitiv

Personality factors and cognitive functioning in patients with somatic symptom and related disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRD) are often complicated by cognitive symptoms, including reduced information processing speed, memory, and planning. Depression has been related to poor cognitive functioning in SSRD, but the role of underlying personality factors is poorly understood. This study investigates the association between personality factors (neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) with cognitive functioning in patients with SSRD. METHODS: Data from 366 patients with SSRD from a tertiary care expert center (mean age = 42.1 year

Social cognition and empathy in adults with obsessive compulsive disorder: A meta-analysis.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsions and has been associated with psychosocial impairment. Indeed, a number of studies have highlighted impairments in both social cognitive functions and empathic skills in OCD, despite several inconsistencies. This study aimed to investigate social cognitive dysfunction and empathy deficits in patients with OCD using a meta-analytic approach. A literature search was conducted using the databases Pubmed, PsycINFO, ProQuest and Scopus to identify the relevant studies (January 1980 to March 2020).

The Role of Cognitive Coping Mechanisms in the Psychotherapeutic Approach of the Major Depressive Disorder.

The depressive disorder represents nowadays an important global health problem, with severe effects for the affected person and for the society as a whole. The psycho-social factors are a major risk element in the onset of depression, overlapping both on the individual vulnerabilities of the affected person, and on the coping mechanisms, especially the disadaptive one. Our study aims were the comparative evaluation of the cognitive coping mechanisms in the evolution of depression and in determining the quality of the therapeutic response in two samples of depressive patients benefiting from ph

Cognition and driving ability in isolated and symptomatic REM sleep behavior disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To analyze cognitive deficits leading to unsafe driving in patients with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), strongly associated with cognitive impairment and synucleinopathy-related neurodegeneration. METHODS: Twenty isolated RBD (iRBD), 10 symptomatic RBD (sRBD), and 20 age- and education-matched controls participated in a prospective case-control driving simulation study. Group mean differences were compared with correlations between cognitive and driving safety measures. RESULTS: iRBD and sRBD patients were more cognitively impaired than controls in global neurocognitive

Cognitive dysfunction and neurometabolic alternations in major depressive disorder with gastrointestinal symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Brain biochemical abnormalities have been associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and cognitive impairments. However, the cognitive performance and neurometabolic alterations of MDD patients accompanied by gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms remain to be elucidated. We aimed to reveal the features and correlation between cognitive impairments and brain biochemical abnormalities of depressed patients with GI symptoms. METHODS: Fifty MDD patients with GI symptoms (GI group), 46 patients without GI symptoms (NGI group) and 50 demographically matched healthy controls (HCs) underwen

Disordered Decision Making: A Cognitive Framework for Apathy and Impulsivity in Huntington's Disease.

A caregiver's all-too-familiar narrative - "He doesn't think through what he does, but mostly he does nothing." Apathy and impulsivity, debilitating and poorly understood, commonly co-occur in Huntington's disease (HD). HD is a neurodegenerative disease with manifestations bridging clinical neurology and psychiatry. In addition to movement and cognitive symptoms, neurobehavioral disturbances, particularly apathy and impulsivity, are prevalent features of HD, occurring early in the disease course, often worsening with disease progression, and substantially reducing quality of life. Treatments r

Prevalence and clinical correlates of cognitive impairment in adults with plasma cell disorders.

IntroductionOlder adults with plasma cell disorders (PCDs) experience cognitive dysfunction that may be attributable to the disease and associated therapies. Yet, this has seldom been reported in the literature. Our objectives were to describe cognitive function (objective and patient-reported) in adults with PCDs and to explore clinical correlates of cognitive impairment.Materials and methodsParticipants completed a geriatric assessment between March 2018 and February 2020. Cognitive function was evaluated using two objective measures - Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA, cutpoint 4) - and t

Cognitive and Experienced Flexibility in Patients With Anorexia Nervosa and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) share a neuropsychological profile characterized by cognitive inflexibility as evident in set-shifting problems, and by strong detail focus. Clinically, both patient groups display a strong rigidity which may be explained by these neurocognitive difficulties. Cognitive inflexibility may hinder treatment uptake and help explain suboptimal treatment outcomes in both AN and OCD. This is the first study to compare clinical AN and OCD groups andto examine similarities and differences in cognitive flexibility. Specifically, thi

Reconciliation of Two Cognitive Models in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: An fMRI Study.

OBJECTIVE: Although cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) fall into two categories: cognitive deficit models and dysfunctional belief models, these approaches have their own ways and have hardly been reconciled. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential relationships between cognitive deficit (using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task, WCST) and dysfunctional belief (measured by scales of dysfunctional beliefs) mediated by neural activity in OCD patients. METHODS: Thirty OCD patients and 30 healthy participants performed the WCST condition and a baseline MATCH con

Cognitive processes associated with emotional disorders: implications for efficient psychological treatments.

BACKGROUND: Emotional disorders (EDs) are the most prevalent worldwide. Despite psychotherapies are their treatment of choice, there are difficulties to apply them properly in mental health services. Since literature shows that cognitive processes are associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms, more information is needed in order to improve psychological treatments. AIMS: To determine the relation between cognitive factors with specific and non-specific ED symptoms in order to promote the development of accurate psychological treatments. METHODS: We analyzed the relation between ruminat

Physical, cognitive, and social status of patients with urea cycle disorders in Japan.

Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) are inherited metabolic diseases that lead to hyperammonemia. Severe hyperammonemia adversely affects the brain. Therefore, we conducted a nationwide study between January 2000 and March 2018 to understand the present status of UCD patients in Japan regarding diagnosis, treatments, and outcomes. A total of 229 patients with UCDs (126 patients: ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency [OTCD]; 33: carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 deficiency [CPS1D]; 48: argininosuccinate synthetase deficiency [ASSD]; 14: argininosuccinate lyase deficiency [ASLD]; and 8: arginase 1 defici

Cognitive Dysfunction in White Matter Disorders: New Perspectives in Treatment and Recovery.

White matter disorders are increasingly appreciated as capable of disrupting cognitive function, and this impairment may be sufficiently severe to produce the syndrome of white matter dementia. Although recognizing this problem is important for diagnostic accuracy, the treatment of cognitive dysfunction and dementia in the white matter disorders has received relatively little attention. Similarly, few data are available regarding the potential for cognitive recovery in these disorders. Recent clinical and laboratory advances, however, indicate that effective treatment and meaningful recovery m

Development of a cognitive bias modification intervention for anxiety disorders in primary care.

OBJECTIVES: There is a great need for low-intensity, scalable treatments in primary care, where most anxious patients first present for treatment. We describe Stage IA treatment development and a Stage IB feasibility trial of cognitive bias modification (CBM) for transdiagnostic anxiety in primary care. METHODS: The online intervention, Mental Habits, comprised eight sessions of a personalized CBM targeting attention and interpretation biases. Coaches assisted patients in using the website, monitored progress via a dashboard, and shared information with primary care providers. We evaluated Me

Perceived cognitive failures and quality of life for older adults with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with bipolar disorder (BD) commonly present with cognitive deficits (e.g., attention, memory, verbal fluency). Concomitantly, older adults with BD commonly report subjective or perceived cognitive failures. For this study, we confirmed a 3-factor model of cognitive failures first validated with older adults free of mental illness (i.e., forgetfulness, distractibility, false triggering). We then computed a structural equation model (SEM) demonstrating the construct validity of perceived cognitive errors in relation to quality of life with BD. Use of SEM enabled us to me
