Adolescent and Young Adult Perceptions of Online Versus In-Person Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study investigated adolescent and young adult (AYA) perceptions of online cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for eating disorders (EDs), examining attitudes toward online versus face-to-face treatment and perceived effectiveness of online CBT interventions. METHOD: Of 258 patients contacted, 75 (29%) completed a survey and 54 (21%) were eligible for inclusion (83.3% female; mean age = 18.33 years), all of whom received telehealth services between March 2020 and December 2022. Measures assessed attitudes toward online and face-to-face counseling, satisfaction with o

Therapeutic Homework and Treatment Outcomes in Youth Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Internalizing Disorders: A Meta-Analysis.

Homework adherence represents a salient, modifiable target for improving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) outcomes for pediatric internalizing disorders. While the adult literature has found a clear connection between CBT homework adherence and treatment outcomes, the evidence among youth have been mixed regarding the extent to which between-session homework adherence predicts CBT outcomes. The present study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis that examines the association between homework adherence and CBT outcomes in clinical trials of internalizing disorders for youth. Fourtee…

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia for individuals with multiple sclerosis (CALM): A randomized control trial protocol.

UNLABELLED: Insomnia is a common problem for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) occurring in at least 40 % of individuals with MS. Sleep disturbances in people with MS have been associated with a reduction in cognitive performance, physical function, psychological well-being, quality of life, and occupational function, as well as increased prevalence of fatigue, pain, depression, and anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), a multicomponent treatment strategy, addresses thoughts and behaviors that can negatively impact sleep and is the recommended treatment for chronic…

Childhood trauma and treatment outcomes in short-term psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy for adult depression.

Childhood trauma (CT) is a known risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD), yet its implications for treatment selection remain unclear. This exploratory randomized controlled trial (N = 100) compared short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in adults with MDD treated in outpatient clinics. CT was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), and depressive symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) at baseline and after 28 weeks of therapy. Line…

Targeting PTSD with ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide: Results from a randomized trial integrating pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition with limited pharmacological options and high rates of partial response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), the current gold standard. Recent evidence implicates the endocannabinoid system and neuroinflammation in PTSD pathophysiology. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an endogenous lipid mediator with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, has emerged as a promising candidate for mitigating PTSD symptoms, in particular when administered in its ultramicronized formulations (PEA-um). METHODS: In …

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Support Services for People With Serious Mental Illness Who Were Experiencing Homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the delivery of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) combined with linkages to supportive services among 508 participants enrolled at multiple homeless service settings in a large urban area. METHODS: Longitudinal residualized change via random-effects models was used to examine changes in trauma symptoms and perceptions of mental health recovery from baseline through the 12th CBT session. Factors associated with treatment retention were examined via machine learning by using elastic net regression. RESULTS: Statistically significant improvements were observed in

Association Between Polygenic Risk and Symptom Severity Change After Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

A large proportion of patients undergoing cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) do not respond sufficiently to treatment. Identifying predictors for change in symptom severity after treatment could inform clinical decision-making, allow for better-tailored interventions, and avoid treatment failure. Prior research on predictors for treatment response has, however, yielded inconsistent findings with limited clinical utility. Here, we investigated the predictive power of nine polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for psychiatric and cognitive traits in 1598 OCD patients

Applying therapist-guided digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in psychiatry: a mixed-methods process evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is prevalent, particularly among individuals with mental health complaints. However, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the first-line treatment, is underutilized in care settings. This study evaluated a therapist-guided digital CBT-I (i-Sleep), gathering insights from participants and therapists to optimize the intervention and inform implementation strategies. METHODS: A mixed-methods process evaluation, guided by the RE-AIM framework, was conducted alongside an effectiveness trial. Data were collected from i-Sleep participants with clinically relevant…

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hypnosis in the Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Control Trial.

We investigated whether adding hypnosis to CBT (CBTH) improved treatment outcomes for MDD with a two-armed, parallel-treated, randomized-controlled trial using anonymous self-report and clinician-blinded assessments. Expectancy, credibility, and attitude to hypnosis were also examined. Participants (n = 66) were randomly allocated to 10-weekly sessions of group-based CBT or CBTH. LMM analyses of ITT and Completer data at post-treatment, six-month and 12-month follow-up showed that both treatments were probably efficacious but we did not find significant differences between them. Analyses of re

Differential effects of hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on the default mode network of depressed patients.

Hypnosis has been applied in healing procedures since the earliest of recorded history and today it is implemented in a wholesome concept Hypnotherapy (HT1). On a neurophysiological level, hypnosis has been associated with parts of the Default Mode Network (DMN2), but its effects on this network when induced in a treatment setting of a widespread disorder, namely depression, have never been investigated. Depression is associated with abnormal functional connectivity (FC3) of the DMN. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT4) has proven itself to be an effective treatment for depression; effects of C…

Treatment credibility as a mechanism of change in cognitive behavioral therapy: Effects on depression and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide evidence for treatment credibility (TC) as a potential mechanism of change in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Therefore, it focused on within-person effects that are free of the influence of stable characteristics and thus allow to exclude certain alternative explanations for the association under study. METHOD: The sample included 1,423 patients receiving outpatient CBT, who presented a wide variety of psychiatric diagnoses (mostly affective and anxiety disorders). TC, depression, and anxiety were measured every fifth session from Session 5 to 25 us…

Functional MRI Neurofeedback Outperforms Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Reducing Tinnitus Distress: A Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the current standard treatment for chronic severe tinnitus; however, preliminary evidence suggests that real-time functional MRI (fMRI) neurofeedback therapy may be more effective. Purpose To compare the efficacy of real-time fMRI neurofeedback against CBT for reducing chronic tinnitus distress. Materials and Methods In this prospective controlled trial, participants with chronic severe tinnitus were randomized from December 2017 to December 2021 to receive either CBT (CBT group) for 10 weekly group sessions or real-time fMRI neurofeedback (fMRI…
