Gait control is a complex movement, relying on spinal, subcortical, and cortical structures. The presence of deficits in one or more of thes … y tasks for challenging gait in prodromal AD and PD, respectively. Investigating how inhibition and cognitive flexibility interfere with gait control is a promising avenue for future research aimed at enhancing early detection of AD and PD, respectively.

The Unified Protocol (UP) for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders is a cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to treat … nt phase followed by four sessions of one of four UP modules (psychoeducation, emotional awareness, cognitive flexibility, and countering emotional behaviors). Essential tremor (ET) is the most common type of movement disorder, although its etiology and neurophysiological substrates remain unclear. While thought to be a benign condition, it has yet to be studied from a neuropsychological perspective. We examined the neurocognitive functioning of 13 nondemented subjects with severe ET, including aspects of memory, cognitive flexibility, and attention. Results revealed that 12/13 subjects demonstrated impairment on 1 or more cognitive measures in comparison with published normative data. The pattern of findings was suggestive of relative dysfunction of…

Impulse Control Disorders (ICD) are associated with impairment in cognitive flexibility and cortical inhibition. In Parkinson's Disease (PD) the relationship between ICD and cognitive dysfunctions is still unclear: some studies found different cognitive profiles between Parkinsonians with and without ICD, whereas others did not. Moreover, findings from studies on ICD in PD are conflicting on which cognitive function is altered. A meta-analysis of 34 studies was performed to shed light on relationship between ICD and cognitive dysfunctions and to reveal the cognitive function compromised in Par…

PURPOSE: This study examined the associations of adiposity indices and physical fitness components with domain-specific cognitive function in postmenopausal women, focusing on hippocampus-dependent mnemonic discrimination.
METHODS: The study involved 68 postmenopausal women aged ≥ 40 years who were at least one year postmenopausal. Body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and adiposity indices comprised body fat mass, body fat percentage, fat mass index, fat-to-lean mass ratio, and android-to-gynoid fat ratio. Cognitive function was assessed using the color-word S

UNLABELLED: Methamphetamine (MA) abuse is increasing worldwide, and evidence indicates that MA causes degraded cognitive functions such as executive function, attention, and flexibility. Recent studies have shown that regular physical exercise can ameliorate the disturbed functions. However, the potential functional network alterations resulting from physical exercise have not been extensively studied in female MA users. We collaborated with a drug rehabilitation center for this study to investigate changes in brain activity and network dynamics after two types of acute and long-term exercise

This article discusses how loving-kindness can be used to treat traumatized refugees and minority groups, focusing on examples from our treatment, culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral therapy (CA-CBT). To show how we integrate loving-kindness with other mindfulness interventions and why loving-kindness should be an effective therapeutic technique, we present a typology of mindfulness states and the Nodal Network Model (NNM) of Affect and Affect Regulation. We argue that mindfulness techniques such as loving-kindness are therapeutic for refugees and minority populations because of their pote

Studies on gene-environment interactions suggest that some individuals may be more susceptible to life adversities than others due to their genetic profile. This study assesses whether or not children with an extra X chromosome are more vulnerable to the negative impact of early life stress on cognitive functioning than typically-developing children. A total of 50 children with an extra X chromosome and 103 non-clinical controls aged 9 to 18 years participated in the study. Cognitive functioning in domains of language, social cognition and executive functioning were assessed. Early life stress

Metabolic considerations are argued to drive cognitive models. I explore the related high-level hypothesis that the brain favours the most anatomically specialised system that still meets demands for computational flexibility in a given task. The hypothesis points to specific claims across a hierarchy of specialisation, from inter-neuronal connection structure to neuronal cell structure, through to non-neuronal cells and analogue mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anxiety disorders is high in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), an under-recognized multisystem condition. Prominent features include an array of somatic, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric disorders. This case study reports for the first time on the application of individual cognitive behavioral therapy in 22q11.2DS.
METHOD: Two young adults with 22q11.2DS and an anxiety disorder received cognitive behavioral therapy based on standard protocols. Feasibility and efficacy were assessed through clinical interviews, clinical observations by the therapist, and quest

Several recent studies in non-human primates have provided new insights into the role of the medial thalamus in different aspects of cognitive function. The mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD), by virtue of its connectivity with the frontal cortex, has been implicated in an array of cognitive functions. Rather than serving as an engine or relay for the prefrontal cortex, this area seems to be more specifically involved in regulating plasticity and flexibility of prefrontal-dependent cognitive functions. Focal damage to MD may also exacerbate the effects of damage to other subcortical rela

A recent study exploring the mediating relationship of cognitive fusion between pain interference and depressive/anxiety symptoms in individuals with SCI found that focusing on cognitive fusion intervention in psychotherapy can help to alleviate the psychological impact of pain interference (Cognitive Fusion as a Mediator Between Pain Interference and Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms Among Adults with spinal cord injury). We discuss the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive fusion and defusion as well as psychological flexibility which are points of focus in acceptance and commitment therapy.

Cognitive control refers to a set of mental processes that enable individuals to flexibly and adaptively engage in goal-directed behavior. Adolescence is characterized by the emergence and subsequent rapid development of adult-like cognitive control abilities, and as such, there is great interest in understanding the neural basis of this maturational process. The goal of the present study was to investigate how the resting-state and task-based functional connectivity (FC) patterns of two brain networks implicated in control processes, the fronto-parietal network (FPN) and the cingulo-opercular
