We herein report a rare case of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing adenosquamous carcinoma of the ascending colon. An 80-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of constipation and hypophagia. His medical history over the past nine years included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arteriosclerosis obliterans, and acute limb ischemia. He had no history of inflammatory bowel disease or other gastrointestinal conditions. Colonoscopy and contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumor in the ascending colon. Biopsies were obtained from five different a

INTRODUCTION: The frequency of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-related aortitis is low. We report a case of successful corticosteroid treatment in a patient with prostate cancer who developed aortitis following pegfilgrastim administration.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old male with castration-resistant prostate cancer initiated docetaxel therapy. During the second cycle, pegfilgrastim was administered for neutropenia prophylaxis. On Day 10, the patient developed a persistent fever and elevated inflammatory markers. Evaluation led to a diagnosis of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-

The colony formation assay (CFA) is a widely used method to assess the self-renewal capacity of cancer cells and evaluate how this property is affected by drug treatment. This protocol presents a streamlined, high-throughput CFA workflow optimized for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), making it suitable for large-scale drug screening projects. Colonies are grown in a methylcellulose-based 3D matrix and quantified using an automated analysis pipeline, allowing robust estimation of colony number and size. This cost-effective approach provides a scalable platform for identifying compou

Classifying newly formed colonies is instrumental in uncovering sources of infection and enabling precision medicine, holding significant clinical value. However, due to the ambiguous features of early-stage colony images in culture dishes, conventional computer vision (CV) classification algorithms are often ineffective. To achieve accurate and efficient colony classification, this paper proposes a high-precision method based on Persistent Homology (PH) and an improved EfficientNet. Specifically, (1) a PH feature extraction algorithm is applied to Candida albicans (CA) and Staphylococcus epid

Honey bees create complex societies of self-organized individuals in intricate colonies. Studies of honey bees are carried out in both the field and the laboratory. However, field research is encumbered by the difficulties of making reliable observations and environmental confounders. Meanwhile, laboratory trials produce data that are not field realistic as they lack key characteristics of a natural colony. Additionally, advances in honey bee research have been hindered without reliable methodology to rear queens in the laboratory. Here we provide a new system to reliably produce queens and wo

INTRODUCTION: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-associated aortitis remains poorly understood among clinicians.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of G-CSF-associated aortitis in a 70-year-old male with stage IVb castration-resistant prostate cancer (cT3bN0M1b) receiving docetaxel chemotherapy. Neutropenia (280/μL) developed on day 8 of the first chemotherapy cycle, prompting subcutaneous administration of filgrastim, a short-acting G-CSF, on days 8-10. On day 14, the patient presented to the outpatient clinic with fever but no other significant symptoms. Computed tomography revealed fi

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of G-CSF on the endometrial receptivity of implantation failure mice. Sixty female mice were treated mifepristone to establish an implant failure model. The treatment groups received different doses of G-CSF. Endometrial tissue and serum were collected on day 5 after mating. The abundance of pinopodes on the endometrium was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The expressions of LPAR3, COX2, and HOXA10 were detected by RT-qPCR and Western blotting. Serum levels of E2, P, VEGF, LIF, TNF-α and IL-10 were measured by ELISA. The expressi

PURPOSE: Choroidal inflammation, complement deposition, and accumulation of C-reactive protein (CRP) are involved in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) pathology. The pro-inflammatory signals that regulate immune cell recruitment in the choroid of patients with AMD remain to be determined. We performed cytokine profiling of human AMD and age-matched control donor tissue to identify inflammatory molecules upregulated in AMD tissue.
METHODS: Protein was isolated from 25 AMD and 21 control donor RPE/choroid macular punches. Total protein was quantified, and 50 µg assayed for expression of 40

Hematopoietic hormones such as granulocyte-colony stimulating factors are commonly used prevent neutropenia in patients undergoing chemotherapy and to prepare patients for bone marrow donations. In rare cases, splenic injury can result from exposure to this medication. We present the case of a 30-year-old man who presented to the emergency department the day after a bone marrow donation procedure complaining of severe, acute onset left upper quadrant abdominal pain, radiating to the shoulder. Neither the patient nor his family reported any abdominal trauma prior to or following the marrow dona

In the 1970s, the India Office Archive within the British Library began inviting the last generation of the Indian Civil Service and Indian Political Service to commit their experiences to written record. Running until the mid-1980s and eventually producing 135 manuscript memoirs, this archive offers a unique insight into the end of the British Empire, as seen a generation hence. This article argues that these memoirs, generated in a time of crisis and fracture within British national identity, are not only vital historical sources but are a significant body of creative work within the context

Coloniality is strongly shaped by aspects of social foraging behaviour. For example, colonies may be important sources of information, while food competition may increase foraging efforts and limit colony size. Understanding foraging ecology considering these apparent trade-offs is required to develop a better understanding of colonial living. We combined animal-borne GPS, cameras and dive recorders to study social foraging in breeding adult northern gannets Morus bassanus-a wide-ranging colonial seabird. We first tested for indirect evidence of prey depletion around the colony by estimating d

AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence of subclinical cardiomyopathy and cardiac mortality in a research colony of non-purebred cats, established as a model of the wider cat population in New Zealand.
METHODS: All apparently healthy, compliant, non-pregnant, non-neonatal cats in the colony at the Centre for Feline Nutrition (Massey University, Palmerston North, NZ) underwent physical examination and echocardiography using a 4.4-6.2-MHz probe by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. Cardiac phenotype was classified following current guidelines. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) phenotype was de

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting disorder that is characterised by respiratory tract inflammation that is mediated by a range of microbial pathogens. Small colony variants (SCVs) of common respiratory pathogens are being increasingly recognised in CF. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the prevalence of SCVs, clinical characteristics and health outcomes for patients with CF, and laboratory diagnostic features of SCVs compared to non-small colony variants (NCVs) for a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative respiratory pathogens.
METHODS: A literature searc

Migratory species with disjunct and localized breeding distributions, including many colonial marine birds, pose challenges for management and conservation as their dynamics are shaped by both broad oceanographic changes and specific factors affecting individual breeding colonies. We compare six colonies of the declining Leach's storm-petrel, Hydrobates leucorhous, across their core range in Atlantic Canada using standard capture-mark-recapture methods to estimate annual survival of individually marked populations of breeding adults. Over the period analysed (5-20 years per colony; 2003-2022),

Tuberculosis (TB), the leading cause of death worldwide by an infectious agent, killed 1.6 million people in 2022, only being surpassed by COVID-19 during the 2019-2021 pandemic. The disease is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb). The Mycobacterium bovis strain Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), the only TB vaccine, is the oldest licensed vaccine in the world, still in use. Currently, there are 12 vaccines in clinical trials and dozens of vaccines under pre-clinical development. The method of choice used to assess the efficacy of TB vaccines in pre-clinical studies is the en

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), also called chronic lung disease of immaturity, afflicts approximately one third of all extremely premature infants, causing lifelong lung damage. There is no effective treatment other than supportive care. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), which impairs vision irreversibly, is common in BPD, suggesting a related pathogenesis. However, specific mechanisms of BPD and ROP are not known. Herein, a neonatal mouse hyperoxic model of coincident BPD and retinopathy was used to screen for candidate mediators, which revealed that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (

BACKGROUND: Eusociality is widely considered to evolve through kin selection, where the reproductive success of an individual's close relative is favored at the expense of its own. High genetic relatedness is thus considered a prerequisite for eusociality. While ants are textbook examples of eusocial animals, not all ants form colonies of closely related individuals. One such example is the ectatommine ant Rhytidoponera metallica, which predominantly forms queen-less colonies that have such a low intra-colony relatedness that they have been proposed to represent a transient, unstable form of e

Obesity is a known risk factor for the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's Esophagus (BE) and the progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma. The mechanisms by which obesity contributes to GERD, BE and its progression are currently not well understood. Recently, changes in lipid metabolism especially in the context of a high fat diet have been linked to GERD and BE leading us to explore whether fatty acid oxidation plays a role in the disease progression from GERD to esophageal adenocarcinoma. To that end, we analyzed the expression of the rate-limiting enzyme, carni

Severe chronic neutropenia (SCN), defined as blood neutrophils <0.5 × 109/L for >3 months, is an uncommon hematological condition associated with recurrent and severe bacterial infections. After short-term clinical trials showed the benefits of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment for SCN, SCNIR (Severe Chronic Neutropenia International Registry) opened to determine the long-term benefits and safety of this treatment. This report summarizes findings from more than 16 000 patient-years of prospective observations for patients with congenital and acquired SCN. We observed that

As a contribution to the existing literature on deliberate or unintended neglect, concealment and ignorance regarding significant and enduring public health problems-produced by economic marginality, lack of political power and institutional failures affecting specific places and groups-this article discusses the history of epidemic sleeping sickness and endemic onchocerciasis in colonial northern Ghana from 1909 to 1957. Despite accumulating evidence of their serious impacts on the health of northern communities, and calls to action on the part of some health officials, both diseases were onl
