Magic bullets need accurate guns--syphilis eradication, elimination, and control.

When cases of early syphilis are treated promptly, the spread of the bacteria within a population is interrupted. However, if complacency is induced by successful control, then upsurges in syphilis incidence can occur. The methods and aims of syphilis control in industrialised countries are reviewed in the light of the potential for regional elimination and global eradication programmes. While the medical means to eliminate syphilis are at hand, acceptable means for finding and treating cases that transmit infection need to be developed, particularly in the marginalized communities with limite

Integration of disease control programmes.

In Equatorial Guinea the structures of the Trypanosomiasis Control Programme and the primary health care network are being used by the country's campaign against schistosomiasis. The benefits--and considerable difficulties--of this endeavour are discussed in the present article.

[Strategies for the certification of the eradication of wild poliovirus transmission in the Americas].

Because it appears that the last case of poliomyelitis caused by transmission of indigenous wild poliovirus occurred 2 years ago on 23 August 1991 in Peru, the challenge for PAHO is to develop a methodology of certification that will convince the rest of the world that the eradication of poliomyelitis in the Americas has been achieved. To that end, the guidelines set forth here allow for a rigorous and standardized evaluation of the certification process by objective experts. As it was during the campaign to eradicate smallpox, epidemiologic surveillance (of acute flaccid paralysis [AFP] in th

[Public health requirements in physical therapy].

Physiotherapy involves manifold measures that are partly not clearly separated from other methods of therapy. In most cases the skin or mucosa are not injured so that the danger of infectious complications is relatively low. On the other hand, patients with severe underlying diseases which are problematic from the aspect of hygiene in connection with infections, may have to be treated (for example, intensive-care patients, patients with decubital ulcers etc.) In such patients physiotherapy must comply with hygienic precautions that are employed with other diseases and treatments to prevent the

[Vaccination schedule, present and future].

The french calendar of vaccinations is devised by the General Directorate of Health (Technical Committee of Vaccinations, High Council of Hygiene) and is regularly updated. The 1990 calendar has recently been published. Primary combined immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis has been brought forward from 3 to 2 months for better prevention of pertussis in young infants. BCG remains mandatory and can be administered in the first days of life without any risk of failure. Immunization against measles, mumps and rubella is performed between the ages of 12 and 15 mont

Travel restrictions and lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic-impact on notified infectious diseases in Switzerland.

Based on notification data the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown in Switzerland was assessed. While the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis almost doubled as compared to 2016-2019, a reduction in all other infectious diseases was recorded. The lowest reduction rates (<25%) were noted for legionellosis, hepatitis A, chlamydia infection and gonorrhoea.

Antibiotics in ingested human blood affect the mosquito microbiota and capacity to transmit malaria.

Malaria reduction is most efficiently achieved by vector control whereby human populations at high risk of contracting and transmitting the disease are protected from mosquito bites. Here, we identify the presence of antibiotics in the blood of malaria-infected people as a new risk of increasing disease transmission. We show that antibiotics in ingested blood enhance the susceptibility of Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes to malaria infection by disturbing their gut microbiota. This effect is confirmed in a semi-natural setting by feeding mosquitoes with blood of children naturally infected with Pl

[Strategies, practices and challenges of integrated prevention and control of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases].

HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and other infectious diseases are concurrently prevalent among some key populations and in certain service settings. Their routes of transmission and risk behaviors also overlap to some extent, exposing affected populations to multiple infection risks. Disease-specific prevention and control strategies have played an important role in controlling major infectious diseases. However, in the context of coexisting infections and highly overlapping target populations, limitations remain in service integration and coordinated implementation. After years of development, Chi

Funding and geographical distribution of clinical trials in infectious diseases.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to map the funding flows in infectious disease randomized clinical trials (RCTs) by examining the relationships between funding sources and trial locations in high-impact journals. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a previously published systematic review of 1343 infectious disease RCTs published (2014-2023) in ten selected high-impact English-language general medicine and infectious disease journals. Funding source, study site, and disease focus were extracted using a standardized data extraction form and analysed by country income leve

[Tips for schistosomiasis prevention and control during the flood season].

Flood disasters frequently occur in schistosomiasis-endemic regions of China during the flood season, which causes a high risk of schistosomiasis transmission. Therefore, it is particularly crucial to control schistosomiasis transmission during the flood season. Based on field schistosomiasis control needs, this article proposes scientifical and operational countermeasures during three phases of pre-flood preparation, response to flood disasters, and post-flood management, and emphasizes multi-faceted interventions as responses to the risk of Oncomelania hupensis spread and schistosomiasis tra
