Barriers and facilitators to community pharmacist-provided injectable naltrexone for formerly incarcerated individuals during community reentry.

INTRODUCTION: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including injectable naltrexone, are a key component in the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). These medications are especially important for individuals transitioning out of correctional facilities and back into their communities. Unfortunately, few formerly incarcerated individuals have access to MOUD upon reentry, incurring a 40-fold greater likelihood of overdose following release compared to the general population. In Wisconsin, community pharmacists have the authority to administer naltrexone injections. However, they have no

Healthcare and Social Needs of Older Adults in Underserved Urban Communities: Insights from Community Health Workers.

As populations age globally, ensuring equitable healthcare access and social support for older adults in underserved urban areas has become increasingly critical. Elderly residents in low-income districts face challenges, including poor living conditions, social isolation, and healthcare access barriers. Community health workers (CHWs) are vital in bridging these gaps, yet their effectiveness is often Limited by resources and training. This qualitative study explores the healthcare and social needs of elderly residents receiving community services, identifies gaps in support systems, and exami

Understanding Myeloma-Related Information Needs and Communication Preferences Within Black American Communities: An Exploratory Study.

Myeloma is the third most common blood cancer and one of the most complex and expensive cancers to treat. Black Americans face health disparities related to myeloma incidence, age at diagnosis, access to novel treatments, and mortality. To help reduce health disparities among Black Americans through education and outreach, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has implemented its Myeloma Link initiative. In 2022, a formative, qualitative evaluation was conducted across the 15 U.S. cities that implemented Myeloma Link to better understand the information and communication needs and preferences of thr

Promoting risk communication and community engagement during Mpox outbreak in fragile conflict zones of Eastern DRC.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared a national outbreak of monkeypox (Mpox) in December 2022, and in February 2023, an incident management system was implemented. As of May 26, 2024, the DRC had recorded 7851 cases of Mpox, with 384 fatalities. The number of confirmed cases in the province has been increasing. Of all cases, 117 (36 %) were individuals living in camps for Internally Displaced People (IDP) in North and South Kivu provinces. These provinces are currently considered as foci of the outbreak. The challenges of this outbreak in Eastern DRC, where there exist high leve

Community-based strategies for tuberculosis control in migrant communities: how to integrate determinants of vulnerability into decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge, particularly among migrant populations, who face increased vulnerability due to social and structural determinants of health. In Catalonia, Spain, the Model of Community and Public Action (MACIP) programme was launched in 2023 to improve TB prevention and care through culturally adapted, community-based interventions delivered by community health workers (CHWs). This study aims to describe the vulnerability determinants among migrants diagnosed with TB and enrolled in the MACIP programme, and to present the community-based

Improving dissemination products and practices for community-based organisations serving LGBTQ+ communities in the USA: a thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the USA, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people report higher rates of tobacco use than non-LGBTQ+ people due to diverse factors, from anti-LGBTQ stigma to targeted marketing by the tobacco industry. There is an opportunity to support behavioural changes by delivering evidence-based health communication campaigns through community-based organisations (CBOs), but an insufficient evidence base and organisational resource restrictions limit this potential. Our previous research with CBO staff and leaders serving LGBTQ+ communities identified gaps in evidence-

The INSAR Community Collaborator Request: Using community-academic partnerships to enhance outcomes of participatory autism research.

Participatory approaches, in which researchers work together with members of the autism community (e.g., autistic people, family members, caregivers, or other stakeholders) to design, conduct, and disseminate research, have become increasingly prominent within the field of autism research over the past decade. Despite growing academic and community interest in conducting participatory studies, stakeholder collaboration remains infrequent in autism research, at least partially due to systemic barriers. To help reduce barriers to engaging in participatory autism research, the International Socie

Community-Led Data Collection: Enhancing Local-Level Scabies Surveillance in Remote Aboriginal Communities in Australia.

Novel approaches to geohealth data analysis offer major benefits to neglected tropical disease control by identifying how social, economic and environmental elements of place interact to influence disease outcomes. However, a lack of timely and accurate geohealth data poses substantial risks to the accuracy of risk identification and challenges to the development of suitably targeted disease control programs. Scabies is one of many skin-related NTDs that is nominated as a priority for global disease control by the World Health Organization, but for which there remains a lack of baseline geospa

Macro-parasites and micro-parasites co-exist in rodent communities but are associated with different community-level parameters.

Wildlife species are often heavily parasitized by multiple infections simultaneously. Yet research on sylvatic transmission cycles, tend to focus on host interactions with a single parasite and neglects the influence of co-infections by other pathogens and parasites. Co-infections between macro-parasites and micro-parasites can alter mechanisms that regulate pathogenesis and are important for understanding disease emergence and dynamics. Wildlife rodent hosts in the Lyme disease system are infected with macro-parasites (i.e., ticks and helminths) and micro-parasites (i.e., Borrelia spp.), howe

Social communication in fragile X syndrome: pilot examination of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC).

BACKGROUND: Social communication is a key area of difficulty in fragile X syndrome (FXS) and there are not yet adequate outcome measurement tools. Appropriate outcome measures for FXS have been identified as a key area of research interest in order to evaluate future therapeutic trials. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change-Minimally Verbal (BOSCC-MV), an outcome measure with strong psychometrics developed for autism spectrum disorder, has promise as an outcome measure to assess social communication change with FXS participants. METHODS: We examined the BOSCC-MV via central cod

Community health worker case-detection of asthma or reactive airways disease in a resource-poor community in Nicaragua.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide, but many cases may remain undiagnosed. Community health worker (CHW) programs have improved detection of other diseases such as childhood pneumonia, but none have been validated for detection of asthma in resource-poor settings. We hypothesized that a CHW administered questionnaire would be effective in case-detection of asthma in a poor Nicaraguan community. METHODS: We enrolled children aged 2-17 from a small semiurban Nicaraguan community. A trained CHW administered a questionnaire based on a previously
