A spatial analysis of power-dependent medical equipment and extreme weather risk in the southeastern United States.

Extreme weather events endanger critical health infrastructure, and many individuals rely on infrastructure to meet their basic needs, such as heat, water, and medical devices. The purpose of this study is to identify spatially explicit at-risk populations for power outages due to these extreme weather events. To accomplish this, we used the HHS emPOWER Emergency Planning Dataset, which was created to help public health authorities plan for and address the needs of communities. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), we overlay emPOWER data with the frequency of extreme weather events, inc

A Data-Driven Response to the Addiction Crisis in Hamilton County, Ohio.

CONTEXT: For more than a decade, the state of Ohio has been an epicenter of the opioid crisis. Multiple interventions have been deployed to address this crisis and reduce opioid overdoses and overdose deaths in the state. The Hamilton County Addiction Response Coalition (HC ARC) and its strategic, countywide prearrest diversion (LEAD) and deflection (QRT) programs have been at the forefront of this effort in Cincinnati, Ohio. Operating since April 2018, these programs have continued to grow and improve and have been successful in connecting hundreds of citizens to needed treatment and other so

Review of Aboriginal child health services in remote Western Australia identifies challenges and informs solutions.

BACKGROUND: Despite a national focus on closing the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal child health outcomes in Australia, there remain significant challenges, including provision of health services in very remote communities. We aimed to identify and map child health services in the very remote Fitzroy Valley, West Kimberley, and document barriers to effective service delivery. METHODS: Identification and review of all regional child health services and staffing in 2013. Verification of data by interview with senior managers and staff of key providers in the Western Australian Country

Eating and drinking abilities and nutritional status in children with cerebral palsy: A population-based study.

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of eating and drinking difficulties as classified with the Eating and Drinking Ability Classification System (EDACS) in a large population-based cohort of children with cerebral palsy (CP) at all levels of motor function, and how EDACS classifications relate to undernutrition. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study based on data from the Swedish CP follow-up programme of children aged 19 years and younger. EDACS ratings were compared to z-scores for weight for age and height for age, calculated using standard references. Regression models were used to esti

Drowning in epilepsy: A population-based case series.

OBJECTIVES: The risk of drowning is reported to be 15-19 times greater in people with epilepsy compared to the general population. Despite this disproportionate burden, there is limited data about the circumstances surrounding drowning deaths in people with epilepsy. This population-based case series characterizes drowning deaths in people with epilepsy. METHODS: Postmortem data from coroner-ordered autopsies conducted in Ontario between 2014 and 2016 were screened for cases of drowning in people with a history of seizures. Demographic information, epilepsy characteristics, and circumstances

Evolutionary drift in systems of care development.

While we agree that it is necessary to articulate a "clearly specified population" for the definition of systems of care, we believe that limiting systems of care to "children and youth with serious emotional disturbance and their families" is not in the best interest of most communities. Using this narrow population definition excludes the other 80-90% of the youth who have mental health challenges but have not risen to the highest level of need. If all children and their families receive the right amount of support from the system of care at the right time, they will avoid the need for more

The Healthy Native Youth Implementation Toolbox: Using Implementation Mapping to adapt an online decision support system to promote culturally-relevant sexual health education for American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth experience serious disparities in sexual and reproductive health, including the highest teen birth rate among racial/ethnic groups, and disproportionate rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV. A growing number of evidence-based programs (EBPs) that integrate the strengths and cultural teachings of Native communities exist. Yet, multiple factors, including lack of trained personnel, limited resources, and geographic isolation, may hinder their adoption and implementation. Innovative implementation strategies that

Enhanced Methodologies to Enumerate Persons Experiencing Homelessness in a Large Urban Area.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness is a public health problem, and persons experiencing homelessness are a vulnerable population. Estimates of the number of persons experiencing homelessness inform funding allocations and services planning and directly determine the ability of a community to intervene effectively in homelessness. The point-in-time (PIT) count presents a logistical problem in large urban areas, particularly those covering a vast geographical area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Working together, academia, local government, and community organizations improved the methodology for the count. Sp

The Communicative-Relational Operating Model of the Italian National Institute of Health for an Effective Telephone Intervention in Public Health, Structured on Basic Counselling Skills.

INTRODUCTION: Communication has a crucial role in public health, because it becomes an essential component of prevention; it is also a proactive tool in health promotion. From a planning perspective, it is appropriate to use communication means that can help the bidirectional communication process, such as face-to-face communication and telephone communication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In relation to this, the Italian National Institute of Health has developed the "Modello Operativo Comunicativo-Relazionale" (the "Communicative-Relational Operating Model"). It is based on the fundamental skills

Shelter From the Health Care Storm.

Homelessness is a well-known social determinant of health, but health status also correlates with housing instability, a broader term that encompasses everything from trouble paying rent to living in overcrowded conditions and to moving frequently. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan-Arizona gives beneficiaries shelter with the hope that health care spending on them will go down.

Engaging adolescents for sexual and reproductive health and rights and family planning advocacy in Pakistan: a qualitative study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young people aged 10-24 years comprise 32% of the total population of Pakistan. Adolescents and young people are a heterogeneous group-in different stages of development, living in different circumstances and with differing and changing needs. Neglect of specific adolescents' sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs can pose serious challenges and affect physical and mental health, future employment, economic well-being and adolescents' ability to reach their full potential. Evidence suggests that adolescents in Pakistan have poor access to SRH services, includi
