Chemical dependence. Health and Public Policy Committee, American College of Physicians.

The American College of Physicians believes that chemical dependence should receive increased recognition as a medical illness that requires medical diagnosis and treatment and greater educational attention. The College encourages physicians to help prevent, diagnose, and treat chemical dependence. Referral of patients to community resources, with appropriate support and patient counseling as well as patient and public education, are important components of this treatment.

Understanding community receptivity to water re-use: Ku-ring-gai Council case study.

This social research project investigated community receptivity to using rainwater and greywater as alternative domestic water sources. It was focused in the Ku-ring-gai local government area in northern Sydney, and involved a household questionnaire followed by community leader interviews and resident focus groups. Trends, such as a prolonged drought and increasing population, compound the current crisis and concern facing Sydney's available water supply. Substitution of domestic potable water has been promoted as part of the solution. The research results revealed that community receptivity

Supporting the education of healthcare professionals is essential to improving patient satisfaction and the overall experience of care for both healthcare professionals and people living with pain. AIMS: To address this gap in pain care communication, this paper aims to describe the CARING in Action project, a patient-oriented approach to c

Oral care in people with dementia living in the community.

Oral health is recognised as an essential component of a person's overall wellbeing, increasingly so in people with dementia. As dementia progresses, a person diagnosed with the condition may become more dependent on the support of the family carer to meet their personal care needs. Similarly, community nurses may be one of the first health professionals that a family carer may call on when difficulties in maintaining good oral care become a concern. An understanding of some of the main concerns and resources available can be helpful for community nurses in helping their patients and their car

The clinical diagnosis and treatment of important childhood diseases in rural Papua New Guinea.

This study used multiple standardized instruments to evaluate the quality of the clinical management of the common childhood diseases in rural Papua New Guinea. The findings indicate major inadequacies in the quality of history taking, examination, record keeping, diagnosis and treatment of the common causes of childhood morbidity and mortality. To improve case management by health workers in rural clinical situations everything possible must be done to make good clinical management easy and practical. This should involve provision of practical reinforcing tools, training and supervision which

Identification of children at risk at the police station and the prevention of delinquency.

In 1978 the World Health Organization suggested that the efficient use of health resources in a global context means paying special attention to those in greatest need. The aim of community health services should be, among other activities, to identify those "at risk" as early as possible in their lives and to intervene directly to reduce that risk (Skuse 1987). In the area of behavioral development, problems are frequently reported: In the Netherlands about 26% of all children appear to have some difficulties with behavioral development (Verhulst 1985). Set in the context of the WHO recommend

Challenges in responding to the ebola epidemic - four rural counties, Liberia, August-November 2014.

The first cases of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in West Africa were identified in Guinea on March 22, 2014. On March 30, the first Liberian case was identified in Foya Town, Lofa County, near the Guinean border. Because the majority of early cases occurred in Lofa and Montserrado counties, resources were concentrated in these counties during the first several months of the response, and these counties have seen signs of successful disease control. By October 2014, the epidemic had reached all 15 counties of Liberia. During August 27-September 10, 2014, CDC in collaboration with the Liberian Min

The benefits of 'One Health' for pastoralists in Africa.

'One health' is particularly suited to serve mobile pastoralists. Dinka pastoralists in Sudan inspired Calvin Schwabe to coin the term 'one medicine', indicating that there is no difference in paradigm between human and veterinary medicine. Our contemporary definition of 'one health' is any added value in terms of improved health of humans and animals or financial savings or environmental services resulting from a closer cooperation of human and animal health sectors. Here we present a summary of 'one health' studies with mobile pastoralists in Africa which were done in research partnership, d

Life cycle assessment of automobile/fuel options.

We examine the possibilities for a "greener" car that would use less material and fuel, be less polluting, and would have a well-managed end-of-life. Light-duty vehicles are fundamental to our economy and will continue to be for the indefinite future. Any redesign to make these vehicles greener requires consumer acceptance. Consumer desires for large, powerful vehicles have been the major stumbling block in achieving a "green car". The other major barrier is inherent contradictions among social goals such as fuel economy, safety, low emissions of pollutants, and low emissions of greenhouse gas

Language use and identity in an ethnically heterogeneous deaf community.

Within the Hungarian Deaf minority in Romania, a combination of two distinct types of culturally rooted minority identity occurs, which generates a minority situation at several levels. Our research conducted in a multicultural city of western Romania (Oradea) aimed to find out what are the prevailing means of linguistic communication within the local Deaf Association community; what are the linguistic communication opportunities available for ethnic Hungarian Deaf community members; and what resources the ethnic Hungarian Deaf employ to maintain and nurture their ethno-linguistic and national

Conceptualizing restorative justice for people with mental illnesses leaving prison or jail.

Individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are involved in the criminal justice system face a number of challenges to community integration upon release. There is a critical need to develop and evaluate interventions for these individuals that connect them to the community by enhancing naturalistic social connections and helping them to participate meaningfully in valued roles. The purposes of this article are to describe, provide a theoretical rationale, and propose a conceptual model for the use of a particular restorative justice model, circles of support and accountability, to meet this

Patterns of Protective Factors Following Childhood Maltreatment and Youth Developmental Outcomes.

This study examines heterogeneity of protective factors (PFs) following experiences of childhood maltreatment and their associations with youths' key developmental outcomes-social skills, positive functioning, and depressive symptoms. Using data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 1,804), we employed latent class analysis to identify distinct PF profiles across family, school, and neighborhood contexts. Three classes emerged: (1) Overall high PFs (63.5%), (2) High family-level, low community-level PFs (32.7%), and (3) Low family-level, high community-level PFs (3.8%). Yo

An experimental evaluation of in-home child abuse prevention services.

Perinatal child abuse prevention projects are rarely rigorously evaluated. Women were referred to the Child Parent Enrichment Project (CPEP) project during or just after pregnancy if identified as at-risk of engaging in child abuse by community professionals. Clients were randomly assigned to CPEP services (n = 97) or traditional community services (n = 94). CPEP services are based on ecological theory and involve six months of home visiting by paraprofessional women and linkage to other formal and informal community resources. No advantages on self-report measures for the CPEP group were meas…
