This review deals with diagnostic problems in DSM-III-R hypochondriasis. A first category of problems is directly connected with the definition of hypochondriasis. The following topics are discussed: the distinction between hypochondriasis and hypochondriacal attitude, the personality aspects of hypochondriasis, and the role of medical findings in the diagnosis. This is followed by a discussion of problems as to the distinction between hypochondriasis and related disorders. This concerns the status of hypochondriasis as a primary or secondary disorder in depression and the relationship with an

There is increasing awareness of the importance of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for optimal brain development and function. In recent decades, researchers have confirmed the central role of PUFAs in a variety of patho-physiological processes. These agents modulate the mechanisms of brain cell signalling including the dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways. Therefore, nutritional insufficiencies of PUFAs may have adverse effects on brain development and developmental outcomes. The role of n-3 PUFAs has been studied in several psychiatric disorders in adulthood: schizophrenia, major depre

Trichotillomania is a relatively frequent cause of alopecia in children. An area of the scalp, of irregular shape, partially devoided of hair or eventually a geometrically designed alopecic area should suggest the diagnosis. The histologic alterationes are characteristic. Most children with trichotillomania have mild alterationes of personality, some require psychiatric evaluation.

Conjoint therapy of marital partners is a technique that lends itself to the counseling efforts of health professionals. Its growing use has, however, brought with it seemingly inevitable pitfalls, such as inadequate assessment of individual needs and psychopathology, overzealous application and disregard of certain contraindications, management problems and goal definition that may be unclear to patients or more related to the therapist's personality than to an objective view of the marriage dynamics. Despite the difficulties and pitfalls of this relatively new field, conjoint therapy can be

Although previous reports have documented mean-level declines in personality disorder (PD) symptoms over time, little is known about whether personality pathology sometimes emerges among nonsymptomatic adults, or whether rates of change differ qualitatively among symptomatic persons. Our study sought to characterize heterogeneity in the longitudinal course of PD symptoms with the goal of testing for and describing latent trajectories. Participants were 250 young adults selected into two groups using a PD screening measure: those who met diagnostic criteria for a DSM-III-R PD (PPD, n = 129), an

Frontotemporal dementia is a rare form of progressive intellectual deterioration. Its most prominent clinical features are alterations in personality, motivation, and social conduct whereas memory and orientation remain largely unimpaired. Several underlying neurodegenerative processes may be distinguished which are confined to the cerebral cortex in most cases but occasionally involve the basal ganglia and rarely the anterior horn cells. Most frequently, histopathological examination reveals a non-specific loss of neurons accompanied by reactive gliosis. In a minority of cases, globose intran

INTRODUCTION: The ketogenic diet is being explored as a therapeutic intervention for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Emerging research suggests that these conditions share common pathophysiologies, with the ketogenic diet showing promise in addressing these. This study reports three individuals who reduced their symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) after adopting a ketogenic diet.
METHODS: Participants were recruited through personal and professional networks among the authors. Each patient was interviewed, and evidence of their mental health history was collected. The

PURPOSE: PCOS is associated with increased risk for depression and anxiety but its association with other psychiatric disorders is less clear, especially in community drawn populations. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in women with PCOS and examine the factors associated with psychiatric disorders in this population.
METHOD: A cross-sectional analysis of survey data was performed in community-recruited women born 1989-95 from the Australian Longitudinal Study of Women's Health (ALSWH). 760 and 7910 women with and without self-reported PCOS were included. The ou

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), such as compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior, and eating, are a serious and increasingly recognized complication of dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Other impulsive-compulsive behaviors have been linked to dopaminergic medications; these include punding (stereotyped, repetitive, purposeless behaviors) and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS; compulsive medication overuse). ICDs have been most closely related to the use of dopamine agonists (DAs), particularly at higher dosages; in contrast, DDS is primarily associated with sho

Literature on temperament, personality, and mood and anxiety disorders is reviewed. The review is organized primarily around L. A. Clark and D. Watson's (1991b) tripartite model for these disorders, but other influential approaches are also examined. Negative affectivity (or neuroticism) appears to be a vulnerability factor for the development of anxiety and depression, indicates poor prognosis, and is itself affected by the experience of disorder. Positive affectivity (or extraversion) is related more specifically to depression, may be a risk factor for its development, suggests poor prognosi

Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a small vessel disease. It is an autosomal dominant inherited disease caused by a mutation in the Notch3 gene. Clinically, it usually presents with recurrent transient ischemic attacks, strokes, vascular dementia, migraine with aura, cognitive impairments and psychiatric symptoms. Cranial MRI is the most useful imaging modality to demonstrate the characteristic radiological findings of CADASIL and gene analysis is the gold standard for diagnosis. Although the clinical manifestations are main

Individuals with comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience more severe OCD symptoms and poorer treatment response. Despite some evidence linking OCD symptom domains to trauma, only one study to date has examined typical OCD and PTSD presentations in individuals with OCD+PTSD, and findings were based on a nonclinical sample. The current study sought to replicate findings in a clinical sample of 1,014 patients diagnosed with OCD (n = 928), PTSD (n = 40), and OCD+PTSD (n = 46) in specialty OCD and anxiety treatment programs. Consistent with p

OBJECTIVE: School-teachers are exposed to high levels of stress and have high rates of premature retirement on psychiatric grounds. This study investigated factors associated with occupational disability due to psychiatric disorders in teachers in South Africa.
METHOD: This retrospective study investigated 81 school-teachers in the Cape Town area who had been declared permanently medically disabled as a consequence of psychiatric disorders.
RESULTS: Patients were relatively young (44+/-6.1 yrs), had experienced symptoms for 5.2+/-3.8 yrs, and had been treated for 4+/-3.5 yrs. Almost half had

OBJECTIVE: This article reports lifetime Axis I and II comorbidity in women with anorexia nervosa (AN), and ascertains specific and nonspecific comorbidity in AN compared to clinical samples of women with bulimia nervosa (BN) or major depression (DEP).
METHOD: Outpatient AN (n = 56), BN (n = 132), and DEP (n = 100) samples were assessed using Structured Clinical Interviews I and II for DSM-III-R. Baseline data were compared using univariate statistics and logistic regression.
RESULTS: In the AN sample as a whole, specific elevations were found for prevalences of obsessive compulsive disorder

In neuroscience, electroencephalography (EEG) data is often used to extract features (biomarkers) to identify neurological or psychiatric dysfunction or to predict treatment response. At the same time neuroscience is becoming more data-driven, made possible by computational advances. In support of biomarker development and methodologies such as training Artificial Intelligent (AI) networks we present the extensive Two Decades-Brainclinics Research Archive for Insights in Neurophysiology (TDBRAIN) EEG database. This clinical lifespan database (5-89 years) contains resting-state, raw EEG-data co

A meta-analysis was conducted to identify the proportion of comorbid personality disorders (PDs) in patients with eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) and binge eating disorder (BED). A search identified 20 articles in the period of 1987 to 2010. For EDNOS and BED, the comorbid proportions for any PD were 0.38 and 0.29, respectively; for cluster C PDs, 0.38 and 0.30, respectively (avoidant PD, 0.18 and 0.12, and obsessive-compulsive PD, 0.11 and 0.10, respectively); and for cluster B PDs, 0.25 and 0.11, respectively (borderline, 0.12 and 0.10). This pattern converged with findings o
