One hundred twenty-eight consecutive men, sexual partners (for more than six months) of women treated for genital condylomata acuminata, were evaluated with colposcopy to assess the percentage of infected men among the couples. In order to evaluate the transmissibility and treatment failures of different types of human papillomavirus (HPV), we obtained biopsy specimens from genital lesions related to HPV in 113 women prior to laser therapy. Sixty-eight had condylomata acuminata, 14 had flat condyloma, and 31 had cervical intraepithelial neoplasia with or without condylomata. This is the 14th case report of squamous cell carcinoma in situ developing in perianal condyloma acuminata. BACKGROUND: Penile pearly papules (PPP) are benign angiofibromas of the penis, frequently misdiagnosed as genital warts (condylomata acuminata). The lesions are often the reason for significant distress of the patient and his sexual partner, thus requiring occasional treatment, removing the lesions in a non-aggressive manner.
METHODS: Forty-five patients with PPP were treated with 2940 nm Er:YAG laser (Skinlight, FOTONA, Slovenia) in ablation mode. The treatment parameters were: energy 400-500 mJ, spot diameter 1.5-3 mm, repetition rate 8-10 Hz and energy density 5.8-28.9 J/cm(2).

The majority of condylomata acuminata (anogenital warts) are caused by infection with Human Papilloma Virus type 6 (HPV-6). We have sequenced the HPV-6 early genes, E1-E4, E6 and E7 from wart biopsy DNA samples sourced from the UK and USA and derived a consensus sequence for these genes and the proteins they encode. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Photofrin II was administered over a 7-year period to 17 patients with recurrent carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the vulva, vagina, and perianum. Ten patients were treated two or three times after average intervening periods of 23 and 19 months, respectively. Sera obtained from 612 patients enrolled in 40 different clinical trials with an interferon-alpha-n1 (IFN-alpha-n1) preparation have been tested for neutralizing activity against this IFN in a cytopathic effect inhibition assay.
