Factor XI-deficient mice display reduced inflammation, coagulopathy, and bacterial growth during listeriosis.

In mice infected sublethally with Listeria monocytogenes, fibrin is deposited at low levels within hepatic tissue, where it functions protectively by limiting bacterial growth and suppressing hemorrhagic pathology. Here we demonstrate that mice infected with lethal doses of L. monocytogenes produce higher levels of fibrin and display evidence of systemic coagulopathy (i.e., thrombocytopenia, fibrinogen depletion, and elevated levels of thrombin-antithrombin complexes). When the hepatic bacterial burden exceeds 1×10(6) CFU, levels of hepatic fibrin correlate with the bacterial burden, which als

Fast, simultaneous, and sensitive detection of staphylococci.

AIMS: Bacterial infections are common and are involved in many forms of disease, ranging from arthritis to food poisoning. Of much concern are nosocomial infections, especially the increasing resistance of bacteria to methicillin. A prerequisite for the successful treatment of bacterial infections is a specific and sensitive method of detecting microorganisms. METHODS: Some methods to detect bacteria are time consuming, whereas others are faster but lack specificity and/or sensitivity. This article describes an optimised polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method that enables the simultaneous det

Assessing Urinary Microbiota in Chronic Cystitis Based on Midstream Urine Sample.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare the urinary microbiota of healthy women, women with a predisposition to UTIs, and patients with chronic recurrent cystitis using real-time PCR, as well as identify diagnostic markers for urinary diseases. METHODS: The study enrolled 3 groups of patients: a healthy control group, patients with chronic recurrent cystitis, and patients with a risk of developing UTIs. Urine samples were analyzed by multiplex real-time PCR reagent kits Femoflor®16 and BacScreen OM. RESULTS: Chronic recurrent cystitis is associated with an increase in total bacterial mass

Primary conjunctival tuberculosis in a 14 year old girl.

Tuberculosis is a common disease in India. However, tuberculosis primarily affecting the conjuctiva is a rare entity. We report a 14-year-old girl who presented with unilateral eye discharge, watering, redness and itching for two weeks. Giant papillae were present on the upper tarsal conjunctiva. A provisional diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis was made. Topical therapy with 1% Prednisolone acetate and 2% Sodium cromoglycate was commenced. The patient returned six months later with no improvement in the symptoms. The tarsal conjunctiva had a polypoidal, velvety appearance with giant papillae

Persistent superficial punctate keratitis after resolution of chlamydial follicular conjunctivitis.

Two cases of follicular conjunctivitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis followed by punctate epithelial keratitis are described. Both cases were initially treated with either oral tetracycline or doxycycline with resolution of the follicles. These two patients subsequently had recurrent, bilateral grayish lesions at various levels in the corneal epithelium that stained in a punctate fashion with fluorescein. There was anterior stromal edema associated with some of these lesions in one case. The lesions were confined mostly to the central cornea. These recurrent lesions were unassociated with a con

Absence of progesterone effects on chlamydial genital infection in female guinea pigs.

The effect of progesterone alone and in combination with estradiol was investigated in ovariectomized and gonadally intact female guinea pigs infected with the chlamydial agent of guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis (GPIC). The course of the infection, as determined by the percentage of cells with GPIC (chlamydia) inclusions in Giemsa-stained vaginal scrapings, was not affected in animals receiving 5.0 mg of progesterone daily. Progesterone had no influence on the enhancement of infection by estradiol. In comparison with sesame oil-treated controls, infection was prolonged by four to six days

Tickborne oculoglandular tularemia: case report and review of seasonal and vectorial associations in 106 cases.

A patient acquired tickborne oculoglandular tularemia in early summer in rural Virginia. Tick exposure may be a clue to the diagnosis of tularemia in the eastern as well as the western United States, especially in summer months. A review of the experience with tularemia in Virginia for the last 13 years shows a bimodal seasonal incidence of tularemia with an associated vector exposure in 77.4% of 106 cases. The majority of cases occurring during winter months have been associated with rabbit exposure, while those in summer months are often associated with tick exposure.

[Neonatal conjunctivitis in a hospital at Gran Buenos Aires. Last 5 years up-date].

Neonatal conjunctivitis is one of the most important consultation reasons in the first days of life. Causes may be chemical or infectious. Neonatal conjunctivitis study for common microorganisms and Chlamydia trachomatis is being performed at Posadas Hospital since 1995, in a progressive form. The objective of this study was to know the epidemiological situation in the last five years (1999-2003), and to describe the variations detected between two periods, 1995-1998, and 1999-2003. It was observed no change about C. trachomatis prevalence (8%), during all the time in the population studied. W

Primary meningococcal conjunctivitis in children.

Four cases of primary meningococcal conjunctivitis in children are reported. This represents an incidence of 2% of patients presenting with conjunctivitis to a paediatric A&E department. All were initially treated with topical chloramphenicol, followed by systemic rifampicin once the diagnosis had been established. No ocular or systemic complications developed, nor recolonisation of the conjunctiva or colonisation of the nasopharynx at follow-up (1-2 years).

Endophthalmitis associated with intravenous drug abuse.

Endophthalmitis is an inflammation of the interior of the eye. We describe an IV drug abuser with endophthalmitis who initially was diagnosed as having an acute conjunctivitis. During the next 12 hours fulminant endophthalmitis developed. The patient failed to respond to treatment, and on the second hospital day underwent subtotal exenteration of the right orbit. The only organism obtained from numerous cultures was Staphylococcus epidermidis. We suspect the causative organism was not isolated.
