No unexpected adverse events and biochemical side effects of olanzapine as adjunct treatment in adolescent girls with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Olanzapine has been recently tried to relieve anxiety and hyperactivity in adolescents with eating disorders (EDs). Presently, the side effects of the drug have been evaluated. METHOD: Forty-seven adolescents with EDs were followed up by repeated blood sampling before, during, and at 3 months after medication with olanzapine. RESULTS: Olanzapine medication was discontinued in three patients because of galactorrhea, seizures, and raised liver enzyme activities, respectively. There was a normalization of glucose, insulin, and lipid profiles during treatment, which was related to wei

Reduced mania and depression in juvenile bipolar disorder associated with long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation.

Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCn-3PUFA) supplementation may improve symptoms of depression in children and bipolar disorder (BD) in adults. No studies have examined the effectiveness of LCn-3PUFA supplementation in the treatment of mania and depression in juvenile BD (JBD) when given as an adjunct to standard pharmacological treatment. Eighteen children and adolescents with JBD received supplements containing 360 mg per day eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 1560 mg per day docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for 6 weeks in an open-label study. Intake and fasting red blood cell (RBC) LCn

Effects of a metabotropic glutamate(2/3) receptor agonist (LY544344/LY354740) on panic anxiety induced by cholecystokinin tetrapeptide in healthy humans: preliminary results.

RATIONALE: Preclinical findings have repeatedly shown an anxiolytic-like action of agonists at metabotropic glutamate receptors type II, such as LY354740. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effect of LY544344, the prodrug of LY354740, upon experimental panic anxiety in humans. METHODS: Twelve healthy human volunteers were treated orally with 80 mg bid LY544344 for 1 week in a randomized placebo-controlled cross-over study before 50 mug cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4) was injected intravenously. We assessed CCK-induced panic and anxiety symptoms and measured stress hormone release.

Treatment of polydipsia and hyponatremia in psychiatric patients. Can clozapine be a new option?

Polydipsia occurs frequently in chronic schizophrenic patients, some of whom develop intermittent hyponatremia. Most therapeutic efforts have tried to control the hyponatremia. Four schizophrenic patients, followed for more than one year, showed improvement on clozapine. Case 1 was an outpatient without history of hyponatremia who improved from polydipsia and psychosis. The last three were inpatients with polydipsia, intermittent hyponatremia, and psychosis who showed minimal improvement of psychosis but significant decrease in polydipsia and water intoxication. Case 2 relapsed to polydipsia w

Resection of the first rib, following deep arm vein thrombolysis in patients with thoracic outlet syndrome.

In order to evaluate, the prophylactic effect of first rib resection in patients with fibrinolytic recanalised deep arm vein thrombosis, we present our experience with 21 patients. After recanalisation 12 had phlebographic signs of venous compression in the costoclavicular space, with the arm in the normal position. This fulfills the requirements for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). In 60 normal persons without symptoms of TOS none had phlebographic signs of venous compression with the arm in normal position. This difference is significant. In the 12 patients TOS was suspected was to be the und

Muscle-Related Effect of Whey Protein and Vitamin D3 Supplementation Provided before or after Bedtime in Males Undergoing Resistance Training.

There is increasing evidence that dietary protein intake with leucine and vitamin D is an important factor in muscle protein synthesis. This study investigated the combined effects of consuming whey protein and vitamin D3 in the evening before bedtime or in the morning after sleeping on muscle mass and strength. Healthy, untrained males (N = 42; Age = 18-24 year) were randomly assigned into three groups: before bedtime, after sleeping, and control. Subjects underwent a 6-week resistance training program in combination with supplements that provided 25 g whey protein and 4000 IU vitamin D3 for

The Impact of Introducing a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Trauma Consultation Service to an Academic Level 1 Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVE: Previous retrospective studies suggest that early physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) consultation for trauma patients improves outcome and reduces acute care length of stay (LOS). There have not been controlled studies to evaluate this impact. This study assesses the impact of PM&R consultations on acute trauma patients. DESIGN: This study compared measured outcomes before and after the introduction of a PM&R consultation service to the trauma program at a large academic hospital. The primary outcome measure was acute care LOS. RESULTS: The 274 historical controls and 76

Local treatment of the inner ear: a study of three different polymers aimed for middle ear administration.

CONCLUSION: A formulation based on sodium hyaluronate (NaHYA) was the most promising candidate vehicle for intra-tympanic drug administration regarding conductive hearing loss, inflammatory reactions, and elimination. OBJECTIVES: Recent advances in inner ear research support the idea of using the middle ear cavity for drug administration to target the inner ear. This paper presents rheological and safety assessments of three candidate polymer formulations for intra-tympanic drug administration. METHOD: The formulations were based on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), sodium hyaluronate

Penile block timing for postoperative analgesia of hypospadias repair in children.

PURPOSE: It has been well established that a dorsal penile nerve block immediately after surgery decreases postoperative pain in children undergoing hypospadias repair. However, to our knowledge the efficacy of a penile block immediately before versus immediately after surgery for postoperative pain control has not been previously studied in such children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 98 healthy boys 6 months to 12 years old undergoing hypospadias repair. General anesthesia was induced and maintained in a standard fashion. Patients were randomly assigned to receive a penile block with

Transvaginal Photobiomodulation for the Treatment of Chronic Pelvic Pain: A Pilot Study.

Background: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a common and debilitating condition that affects millions of U.S. women. Most treatments are ineffective and innovative new therapies are desperately needed. Large, controlled studies show that photobiomodulation (PBM) can reduce pain in patients with other chronic pain conditions, such as low back pain, neck pain, and fibromyalgia. The objective of this pilot study was to determine if transvaginal PBM (TV-PBM) can reduce pain in women with CPP. Methods: We conducted a before and after, observational, pilot study. Patients completed the Short Form-McGil

Jumper's knee. Review of the literature.

Jumper's knee is an overuse disease. The initial subjective complaints are well-localized pain, usually occurring after physical activities and often at the lower pole of the patella. The diagnosis of jumper's knee is usually easily established after acquiring a detailed history and a carefully performed physical examination, but the lesion can be mistaken for other disorders or injuries, such as bursitis, meniscal injuries or chondromalacia (1) or other causes of the patellofemoral pain syndrome. Today ultrasonography is the method of choice for the evaluation of jumper's knee as it is both t

Efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in patients with lateral epicondylitis: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Lateral epicondylitis is a common elbow problem. Although extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is widely used in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis, its efficacy is still controversial. Moreover, the number of prospective, randomized, controlled studies in the literature is not sufficient. Here, we intend to investigate the efficacy of ESWT. METHODS: The study was randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, and prospectively planned. Forty patients who met the inclusion criteria were divided into two groups, real ESWT (Group 1, n=20) and placebo ESWT (Group 2, n=20), in a

Can Growth Hormone Lead to a Faster Recovery from Guillain-Barré Syndrome? Case Report of the First Therapeutic Use in One Patient.

Although the prognosis in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is generally good, protracted and incomplete courses of recovery can be a heavy burden. Animal studies suggest growth hormone (GH) treatment could stimulate myelin repair and thus accelerate functional recovery in acute polyneuropathy. We report on the first use of GH in GBS. Our objective was to monitor safety and tolerability as well as to evaluate the effect of an off-label GH therapy during recovery from GBS in 1 patient. A 28-year-old male with flaccid tetraparesis caused by pure motor GBS was treated off-label with GH (1 mg/day) for

A Novel Minimally Invasive Salvage Technique for One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass Leaks: A Preliminary Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leak after one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) remains a serious postoperative complication with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite multiple available strategies, no standardized approach exists for managing gastrojejunostomy leaks. This study presents a simple, minimally invasive technique designed to control leakage and promote tract closure. METHODS: This single-centre case series included five consecutive patients who developed gastrojejunostomy leaks following OAGB between 2020 and 2025. All patients were managed using a novel minimally invasive techni
