Acute convulsive seizures are overwhelming events that require immediate attention from clinicians and practitioners, especially when witnessed in a hospital setting. Adequate management of inpatient-witnessed seizures lies in understanding the time-related pathophysiologic stages of the seizure. The anatomical location of the seizure origin is as important as seizure stage but might not be easy to determine in the acute setting, especially if the seizure is nonfocal. Although investigating and treating the cause of a seizure has high priority, understanding the interplay between the pathophys

Syncope is a condition often misdiagnosed as epilepsy. Syncope caused by cardiac disturbance is a life-threatening condition and accurate diagnosis is crucial for patient outcome. We present a case study of a 71-year-old woman who was referred to our epilepsy centre with a diagnosis of refractory epilepsy. We diagnosed convulsive syncope caused by malignant cardiac arrhythmia based on the presence of cardiac asystole lasting for 20-30 seconds, which was caused by sick sinus syndrome combined with third-degree atrioventricular block. The most prominent feature of this syncope was atypical trunk

Benign familial infantile convulsions (BFIC) is an autosomal dominantly inherited epilepsy syndrome with onset between 3 and 12 months of age. It is characterized by brief seizures with motor arrest, cyanosis, hypertonia, and limb jerks. Seizures respond well to antiepileptic drugs and remission occurs before the age of 3 years.(1) Several recent publications described heterozygous mutations in the proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 (PRRT2) gene on chromosome 16p11.2, one of the known BFIC loci,(2,3) in an increasingly large number of families with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) and

OBJECTIVE: To recognize abdominal epilepsy in adults.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: Case 1: A 21-year-old woman with DM type I presented with a 2-month history involving four episodes of severe abdominal pain and vomiting, each of which lasted four to five days. She had a recurrence every two weeks. The EEG revealed 'spike and wave ' and she was started an intravenous phenytoin that resolved the symptoms. Case 2: A 20-year-old woman with DM type I was admitted with a 2-month history of recurring severe left upper quadrant pain associated with occasional nausea but no vomiting. S

AIM: Rotavirus and norovirus gastro-enteritis (GE) are common in children. Complications, except severe dehydration, are rare. Rotavirus was known to cause seizures and even GE encephalopathy, but these complications are less described in norovirus infection. The objective of this study is to compare the demographic features, clinical manifestations including the incidence of afebrile seizure, and the outcomes in children with rotavirus and norovirus infections.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of children between age 1 month and 6 years admitted to the paediatric department of a regio

Afebrile seizures in children usually necessitate investigations in order to determine the etiology and estimate the prognosis. Recently, convulsions that are described as benign but afebrile have been documented in children, in association with diarrhea, and are now recognized as a distinct entity. Benign afebrile seizures with mild gastroenteritis are defined as convulsions accompanying symptoms of mild diarrhea without dehydration or electrolyte derangement and without fever before and after the seizures in healthy children without meningitis, encephalitis or encephalopathy. The convulsions

Ivermectin is one of the most commonly used drugs in pharmacotherapy of parasitic diseases in domestic and wild animals caused by parasitic nematodes and arthropods. However, ivermectin and other avermectins very often produce side-effects in hosts. The most dominant clinical symptom of ivermectin toxicity in domestic and wild animals is CNS depression. In nematodes, the target site of ivermectin's action is glutamate-gated chloride-channel receptor and GABA receptor. The depressive effect of ivermectin in mammals might include more than one mechanism; therefore, the anticonvulsive effect of i

Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) in childhood is a medical emergency and its aetiology and outcome mean that it should be studied separately from adult CSE. The incidence in developed countries is between 17 and 23/100,000 with a higher incidence in younger children. Febrile CSE is the commonest single group with a good prognosis in sharp distinction to CSE related to central nervous system infections which have a high mortality. The aim of treatment is to intervene at 5 min and studies indicate that intravenous (i.v.) lorazepam may be a better first-line treatment than rectal diazepam and

Benign familial infantile convulsion is an autosomal dominant epilepsy syndrome characterized by seizures starting from 3 to 12 months and a favorable outcome. We present a Turkish family with benign familial infantile convulsions and report the clinical variability associated with this syndrome in three generations. All 11 affected members had benign infantile seizures, which were primarily generalized in all but one patient, who had partial seizures with secondary generalization. The seizures started within the first year and were accompanied by normal neurologic development and a good respo

Dyskinesias and seizures are both medically refractory disorders for which cannabinoid-based treatments have shown early promise as primary or adjunctive therapy. Using the Borna disease (BD) virus rat, an animal model of viral encephalopathy with spontaneous hyperkinetic movements and seizure susceptibility, we identified a key role for endocannabinoids in the maintenance of a balanced tone of activity in extrapyramidal and limbic circuits. BD rats showed significant elevations of the endocannabinoid anandamide in subthalamic nucleus, a relay nucleus compromised in hyperkinetic disorders. Whi

Febrile convulsions are common among preschool children and are studied experimentally with hyperthermia in rat pups. Although heat-induced convulsions (HC+) can affect behaviors in adulthood, to date no one has examined the effects on behavior in the neonatal period. We examined the effects of HC+ on ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and mother-pup interactions in P10- and P12-aged rat pups. On P7, 34 pups were subjected to HC+ (32 controls, HC-) and behaviors were observed on P10 and P12. For mother-pup interactions, a trend for a sex x treatment interaction was found, with HC- females and HC+

Ropivacaine is a local anesthetic frequently used to provide regional blocks because its toxicity threshold is favorable and it is highly selective for sensory nerve fibers. Few reports of adverse events and complications related to use of ropivacaine have been published. We report 2 cases of central nervous system toxicity. Each occurred after a brachial plexus block with 0.75% ropivacaine, one performed by an axillary approach and one by an infraclavicular approach with nerve stimulation.
