Study protocol of the ASD-Net, the German research consortium for the study of Autism Spectrum Disorder across the lifespan: from a better etiological understanding, through valid diagnosis, to more effective health care.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a severe, lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder with early onset that places a heavy burden on affected individuals and their families. Due to the need for highly specialized health, educational and vocational services, ASD is a cost-intensive disorder, and strain on health care systems increases with increasing age of the affected individual. METHODS: The ASD-Net will study Germany's largest cohort of patients with ASD over the lifespan. By combining methodological expertise from all levels of clinical research, the ASD-Net will follow a translati

Complementarity between medical geneticists and genetic counsellors: its added value in genetic services in Europe.

Clinical genetic services have progressed significantly the last few decades. This has led to the need for non-medical health-care professionals working as genetic counsellors in Europe and worldwide. However, there is no unified approach to genetic counsellors' role in health-care services in Europe, as in most countries the profession is still emerging and the educational backgrounds diverge noticeably, within and between countries. This qualitative study aims to describe the potential added value of genetic counsellors in clinical genetics teams and to explore their tasks and responsibiliti

Implementing business continuity management systems and sharing best practices at a European bank.

This paper provides an overview of the methodology applied by the Alpha Bank Group in order to implement a business continuity management (BCM) programme to its parent company (Alpha Bank SA), as well as to its subsidiaries in Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, UK and Ukraine. It also reviews the problems faced, how they were overcome and the lessons learned. When implementing a BCM programme in a large organisation, it is very important to follow the methodology described by BCM standard ISO 22301, otherwise the business continuity plan

Fostering collaborative research for rare genetic disease: the example of niemann-pick type C disease.

Rare disease represents one of the most significant issues facing the medical community and health care providers worldwide, yet the majority of these disorders never emerge from their obscurity, drawing little attention from the medical community or the pharmaceutical industry. The challenge therefore is how best to mobilize rare disease stakeholders to enhance basic, translational and clinical research to advance understanding of pathogenesis and accelerate therapy development. Here we describe a rare, fatal brain disorder known as Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) and an innovative research collabo

Co-authorship network analysis in health research: method and potential use.

Scientific collaboration networks are a hallmark of contemporary academic research. Researchers are no longer independent players, but members of teams that bring together complementary skills and multidisciplinary approaches around common goals. Social network analysis and co-authorship networks are increasingly used as powerful tools to assess collaboration trends and to identify leading scientists and organizations. The analysis reveals the social structure of the networks by identifying actors and their connections. This article reviews the method and potential applications of co-authorshi

Ataxia telangiectasia, Menkes kinky hair disease and neurocutaneous melanosis.

This article explores three neurocutaneous syndromes (NCSs), i.e. genetic disorders producing developmental abnormalities of the skin and an increased risk of neurological complications. In this review, different aspects of ataxia telangiectasia, Menkes kinky hair disease and neurocutaneous melanosis are examined: clinical features, genetic defect, mutation spectrum, pathogenesis, and neurobiological basis; indications for clinical practice are also provided to the readers. The aim of this review is to stress the importance of cooperation among dermatologists, neurologists and psychiatrists, i

Collaborative Development and Results of a Nigerian Trauma Registry.

BACKGROUND: More than 90% of injury-related deaths and disabilities occur in low- and middle-income countries. The development of the Nigerian Trauma Registry (NTR) and the first descriptive data analysis of the patient characteristics, mechanisms of injury, injury severity, and treatments are reported. METHODS: Existing data collection tools were modified to capture a minimum data set of variables reflective of the trauma experience in Nigeria. Data are collected using the secure, Web-based application, REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture). RESULTS: Two hospitals entered 564 patients i

[Minimally invasive surgery of the anterior skull base: transorbital approaches].

Minimally invasive approaches are becoming increasingly popular to access the anterior skull base. With interdisciplanary cooperation, endonasal endoscopic in particular approaches have seen an impressive expansion of indications over the past decades. The more recently described transorbital approaches represent minimally invasive alternatives with a differing spectrum of access corridors. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss transorbital approaches to the anterior skull base in the light of the current literature. The transorbital approaches allow excellent exposure of difficult to

Punishment does not promote cooperation under exploration dynamics when anti-social punishment is possible.

It has been argued that punishment promotes the evolution of cooperation when mutation rates are high (i.e. when agents engage in 'exploration dynamics'). Mutations maintain a steady supply of agents that punish free-riders, and thus free-riders are at a disadvantage. Recent experiments, however, have demonstrated that free-riders sometimes also pay to punish cooperators. Inspired by these empirical results, theoretical work has explored evolutionary dynamics where mutants are rare, and found that punishment does not promote the evolution of cooperation when this 'anti-social punishment' is al

[Halitosis management by the general dental practitioner- results of an International Consensus Workshop*].

Clinical investigations on patients suffering from halitosis clearly reveal that in the vast majority of cases the source for an offensive breath odor can be found within the oral cavity (90%). Based on these studies, the main sources for intra-oral halitosis where tongue coating, gingivitis/periodontitis and a combination of the two. Thus, it is perfectly logical that general dental practitioners (GDPs) should be able to manage intra-oral halitosis under the conditions found in a normal dental practice. However, GDPs who are interested in diagnosing and treating halitosis are challenged to in

Building a solid foundation for sexual violence research: applying lessons learned to inform research priorities.

The extant research on sexual violence has developed into a substantial body of knowledge, in large part supported by federal funds from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and National Institutes of Health (NIH) components. Overall, NIJ has dedicated over US$20 million in research funds to study sexual violence resulting in more than 60 studies and multiple topic-specific research-to-practice meetings. From an initial study on the criminal justice response to rape in 1973 to present-day initiatives on multidisciplinar

The multi-step process of building TB/HIV collaboration in Cambodia.

Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS have synergistic health impacts in terms of disease development and progression. Therefore, collaborative TB and HIV/AIDS activities are a logical health systems response. However, the establishment of these activities presents a challenge for countries that have strong vertical disease programs that differ in their implementation philosophies. Here, we review the process by which TB/HIV collaboration was established in Cambodia. A cycle of overlapping and mutually reinforcing initiatives - local research; piloted implementation with multiple options; and several roun

ChMP: A collaborative medical history portal.

Family medical histories play an invaluable role in disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Self reported medical histories frequently contain incorrect or incomplete information, severely diminishing the quality of care and clinical outcome of the patient. While tools for obtaining and analyzing medical histories are available to medical professionals, no system exists to allow families to actively participate in the collection and utilization of medical history data. We have developed a free web-based service (http://www.inherithealth.com) that allows a family to collaboratively capture

Violence exposure across multiple contexts: individual and joint effects on adjustment.

This study examined the relationship between violence exposure in three different contexts (home, school, and community) and internalizing and externalizing outcomes in early adolescents. We modeled both context-specific and cumulative effects of exposure to violence. After controlling for a number of risk factors associated with violence exposure, violent incidents encountered at school and at home were consistently related to multiple outcomes. Violence exposure in the community was related only to aggressive fantasies but not to other externalizing or internalizing problems. High levels of
