BACKGROUND: Hair concentrations of cortisol and cortisone are increasingly used as potential biomarkers of chronic stress. However, their validity as indicators of psychosocial stress remains debated, as prior research shows variable associations with stress-related psychological and behavioral factors. CONTEXT: Obesity and cardiometabolic diseases are associated with higher long-term glucocorticoid levels, measured as scalp hair cortisol (HairF) and cortisone (HairE). Cardiometabolic diseases have also been associated with copeptin, a stable surrogate marker for the arginine-vasopressin (AVP) system. The in vitro effects of 13 indole compounds on the synthesis of glucocorticoids and of adrenal androgens in sheep adrenal glands has been studied from 11-deoxycortisol as a precursor. Chitin assay was used to measure Absidia ramosa infection in the brain and kidneys of cortisone-treated mice. Mice dying 3 days after challenge had brain and kidney infection but normal renal function as determined by measurement of blood urea levels. Mice dying 5 or 6 days after challenge had infection in the kidneys but not the brain and were uraemic.

Panhypopituitarism may be associated with spontaneous hypoglycemia and marked insulin sensitivity.
