Tears and Eyewear in Forensic Investigation-A Review.

Body fluid analysis has played a crucial role in ascertaining various characteristics and has greatly aided in reconstructing events during crime scene investigation. It is often presumed that crimes that involve violence and mental disturbances such as murder or sexual assault provide good sources of body fluids such as blood, saliva, semen, vaginal secretions, urine and tears. Tears are secreted in response to any emotional or stressful situations and may be found deposited on surfaces such as bedding, tissue paper or cloth. In the absence of the commonly noted body fluids such as blood or s…

Child Abuse and Neglect, and Psychiatric Disorders in Nonviolent and Violent Female Offenders.

Although the percentage of crimes committed by females has increased over the last 20 years in the United States, most research focuses on crimes by males. This article describes an examination of the extent to which childhood maltreatment predicts violent and nonviolent offending in females and the role of psychiatric disorders. Using data from a prospective cohort design study, girls with substantiated cases of physical and sexual abuse and neglect were matched with nonmaltreated girls (controls) on the basis of age, race, and approximate family socioeconomic class, and followed into adultho…

Cognitive insensitivity and cognitive impulsivity as mediators of bullying continuity: Extending the psychological inertia construct to bullying behavior.

Psychological inertia, the process by which social-cognitive variables help maintain behavioral patterns over time, has been found to explain crime continuity. The present study sought to determine whether psychological inertia can also be used to explain continuity in bullying behavior. A group of 1,161 youth (567 male) from the Illinois Study of Bullying and Sexual Violence were surveyed 3 times over a period of 1 year in an effort to determine which of two dimensions of precriminal cognition-cognitive insensitivity (callous, self-serving) or cognitive impulsivity (reckless, emotional)-media…

Substance use predictors of arrest and self-reported criminal behavior in the United States: The role of psychedelics and rarely used drugs.

BACKGROUND: Little research investigates the role of rarely used drugs in criminal offending. Moreover, given research suggesting that psychedelics reduce criminal offending, more research is needed to further document connections between psychedelics and crime. AIM: This study examines the role of rarely used drugs in criminal behavior and extends previous research on psychedelics by incorporating additional substance use measures, including youth respondents, and analyzing self-reported crime as well as arrests. METHODS: Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2014-2023…

Triggering Change: Evaluating the Impact of ATF Actions on Firearm Assault Rates in a Large US City.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal firearm violence claims approximately 15,000 lives annually in the USA. 5% of gun stores-known as 'trace stores'-account for 90% of firearms used in crimes. Oversight of these stores falls to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). However, the efficacy of ATF enforcement on reducing firearm-related violence remains understudied. This study evaluates the relationship between ATF interventions and local firearm crimes and assaults. METHODS: Firearm assault and homicide data (June 2014 to January 2020) were collected from the local Police Department's Open …

Criminal justice measures for economic data harmonization in substance use disorder research.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of substance use disorders (SUDs) are varied and broad, affecting many sectors of society and the economy. Economic evaluation translates these consequences into dollars to examine the net economic impact of interventions for SUD, and associated conditions such as HCV and HIV. The nexus between substance use and crime makes criminal justice outcomes particularly significant for estimating the economic impact of SUD interventions, and important for data harmonization. METHODS: We compared baseline data collected in six NIDA-funded Seek, Test, Treat and Retain (STTR…

FIGG at 5: An update on U.S. public perspectives on forensic investigative genetic genealogy five years after its introduction to criminal investigations.

In 2018, after law enforcement announced it had used a technique called forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) to identify the Golden State Killer, we conducted a U.S. general population survey and found most respondents supported using FIGG to solve violent crimes. Since then, FIGG has helped close hundreds of criminal cases, but it also has weathered controversies. On FIGG's fifth anniversary, we conducted an expanded, follow-up survey with U.S.-based participants to determine if public opinion had changed and found continued support for FIGG across most applications. The same propo…

Forensic toxicology of benzodiazepines: neuropharmacological effects, analytical challenges, and emerging detection strategies.

The increasing misuse of benzodiazepines (BZDs) in drug-facilitated crimes (DFCs) has become a serious concern for forensic experts, healthcare professionals, and legal authorities. These drugs, which are commonly prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders, are also used to commit crimes such as sexual assault and robbery. Their sedative and memory-blocking effects render them particularly dangerous. One of the biggest challenges is that BZDs are rapidly broken down in the body, limiting the time available for detection. This creates major problems in forensic investigations and reduces the ch…
