Dengue virus is known to modulate host cell lipid metabolism in order to promote efficient viral replication. Recent studies have focused on circulating lipids as potential biomarkers of dengue severity; however, the results obtained so far lack the consistency to establish a definite relationship between the two. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated serum lipids as potential biomarkers of dengue severity by conducting a meta-analysis of the currently available clinical data. Nine studies that evaluated 1,953 patients were included in the review, many of which were cross-sectional

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) alters systemic hemodynamics and affects several biochemical systems involved in cardiovascular regulation. We investigated the changes in levels of circulating epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) and related them to events during CPB. Twenty-eight patients undergoing various surgical procedures were studied. Plasma E and NE were determined by radioenzymatic assay at eight stages of the operation. A ninefold increase in arterial E (from 75 +/- 13 to 708 +/- 117.3 pg/ml) occurred from prebypass (stage 1) measurements to the end of aortic cross-clamping (stage 4)

INTRODUCTION: Orthoflaviviruses are emerging in Europe and have potential significant impact on animal and public health. Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV) have been first detected in the Netherlands in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) have been suggested as an interesting population to detect the circulation of orthoflaviviruses. We aim to provide epidemiological insights of USUV and WNV infections in wild boars in the Netherlands. We further explore the interpretation of serological results, taking into account cross-reactivity patterns.
METHODS: A total of 15

Xanthohumol (XN), a prenylated chalcone isolated from Humulus lupulus L., exhibits a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and chemopreventive effects. However, its therapeutic application is limited by poor aqueous solubility, low chemical stability, and rapid clearance from the systemic circulation. The present study aimed to develop and characterize a novel nano-sized drug-delivery system for XN that combines favourable colloidal stability, efficient encapsulation, sustained release, and reduced recognition by macrophages ("stealth-like" properties).

INTRODUCTION: Cross-sectional imaging is frequently obtained after sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) to determine the aetiology. Although imaging studies may reveal acute and/or chronic findings that may impact downstream medical management, lack of standardized guidelines results in significant practice variability. We aimed to perform a descriptive analysis and to report on radiographic findings after SCA.
METHODS: This was a retrospective observational descriptive study that included all adult SCA patients who presented to our emergency department (ED) over a 6-year period, achieved sustained re

INTRODUCTION: The investigation of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) and inflammatory response associated with the different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) may reveal biomarkers of disease pathogenesis. Our goal was to identifying differences in the circulating miRNAs expression between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and non-dialytic (ND) patients and determine the regulatory miRNA-target gene networks and pathways potentially involved in disease pathogenesis.
METHODS: This was an exploratory cross-sectional study that included ND and PD patients with CKD stage 5 over 18 years of age. Inflamma

BACKGROUND: Higher prevalence of obesity has been observed among women compared to men, which can be explained partly by the higher consumption of sweets and physical inactivity. Obesity can alter immune cell infiltration, and therefore increase the susceptibility to develop chronic inflammation and metabolic disorders. In this study, we aimed to explore the association between free sugar intake and other unhealthy lifestyle habits in relation to the proportion of circulating iNKT cells among women with healthy weight and women experiencing overweight and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 21 is an important regulator of glycemic control, but the association between circulating FGF21 and diabetic complications is poorly understood. Moreover, basal FGF21 secretion, especially in response to insulin dose, in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), has not been well examined. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association of circulating FGF21 levels with diabetic complications and insulin dosage in middle-aged and elderly patients with T1DM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 127 middle-aged and elderly patients with T1D

Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to be associated with anaemia. Circulating 25(OH)D consists of both epimeric and nonepimeric forms. However, the relative roles of epimeric and nonepimeric vitamin D in regulating anaemia and haemoglobin levels remain unknown. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of vitamin D, including its epimers, on haemoglobin levels, independently of its effect on circulating high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). This was a cross-sectional study of 1655 subjects from a long-term follow-up cohort at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. Ven

OBJECTIVES: Growing evidence argues for a relationship between liver and bone metabolisms. Sclerostin is a secreted glycoprotein and could antagonize osteoblast-mediated bone formation. Previous studies indicated that circulating sclerostin levels may be associated with metabolic parameters with inconsistent results. This study was designed to evaluate serum sclerostin in patients with or without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to analyze its relationship with metabolic parameters in different populations.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was designed and 168 NAFLD subjects and 8

PURPOSE: Insulin-like peptide 5 (INSL5) is a gut peptide hormone that is a member of relaxin/insulin superfamily. Growing evidence implicates the crucial role of the peptide in some metabolisms including food intake, glucose homeostasis and reproductive system. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is involved in both reproductive and metabolic issues. The aim of the study was determination of circulating levels of INSL5 alteration in women with PCOS and evaluation of the relationship between INSL5 and hormonal-metabolic parameters as well as carotid intima media thickness (cIMT).

BACKGROUND: Influenza is a major cause of acute respiratory infections worldwide. In tropical regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, influenza circulates year-round with irregular peaks, yet genomic data guiding prevention strategies remain limited. This study characterized the genetic diversity and seasonal dynamics of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) viruses circulating in Burkina Faso in 2024.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to December 2024, including seven sentinel surveillance sites. Patients presenting with influenza-like illness or severe acute respiratory i

Rising obesity rates pose significant concerns for aging and brain health. Insulin resistance (IR), prevalent in both obesity and Alzheimer's disease (AD), accelerates neurodegeneration. Adequate choline intake may help reduce obesity risk and IR, yet many individuals consume less than recommended-a deficiency associated with increased AD risk. Here, we examined circulating blood choline, metabolic dysfunction markers, inflammatory cytokines, and neurofilament light (NfL), a protein that is used as a prognostic marker for neuronal damage, in young-adult participants (mean age 33.6 years) with

INTRODUCTION: Circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) may play a crucial role during pregnancy by sustaining adequate placentation and fetal growth. Unambiguous demonstration of EPC increase during pregnancy has been hampered so far by lack of standardized methods for EPC quantification. In this study we used the currently most accepted phenotype for EPC detection for investigating whether maternal circulating EPCs might increase during normal pregnancy and whether they may fail to increase in pregnancy complicated by idiopathic intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), a leading cause o

C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is a potent stimulator of endochondral bone growth through a subtype of membranous guanylyl cyclase receptor, GC-B. Although its two cognate natriuretic peptides, ANP and BNP, are cardiac hormones produced from heart, CNP is thought to act as an autocrine/paracrine regulator. To elucidate whether systemic administration of CNP would be a novel medical treatment for chondrodysplasias, for which no drug therapy has yet been developed, we investigated the effect of circulating CNP by using the CNP transgenic mice with an increased circulating CNP under the control

The arthroconidial yeast genera Geotrichum and Magnusiomyces exhibit a striking dual nature, simultaneously acting as destructive postharvest pathogens, essential agents in dairy fermentation, and life-threatening opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised hosts. Despite extensive domain-specific research, the mechanistic basis of this functional divergence remains poorly integrated across taxonomy, plant pathology, food microbiology, and clinical mycology. This review proposes a cross-domain framework that integrates taxonomic uncertainty, conserved molecular mechanisms, ecological plastici

Coronaviruses have caused several human epidemics and pandemics including the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Prophylactic vaccines and therapeutic antibodies have already shown striking effectiveness against COVID-19. Nevertheless, concerns remain about antigenic drift in SARS-CoV-2 as well as threats from other sarbecoviruses. Cross-neutralizing antibodies to SARS-related viruses provide opportunities to address such concerns. Here, we report on crystal structures of a cross-neutralizing antibody, CV38-142, in complex with the receptor-binding domains from SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-Co
