The authors present a case of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in 5 years old boy. Despite intensive topical pharmacological therapy (mast-cell stabilizers, antihistamines, steroids in acute exacerbations) unsatisfied reduction of the symptoms was observed and cornea became involved in the left eye (LE). Repeated surgical abrasion of the papillary hypertrophy was performed with temporaly relief. We decided to provide a cryocoagulation of the papillary hypertrophy in the LE. A modified tandem scanning confocal microscope was used for real-time in vivo examination of the rabbit cornea following a cryogenic injury. Cryotherapy of the peripheral avascular retina in selected cases of retinopathy of prematurity has been shown to reduce the incidence of posterior retinal detachment, retinal fold involving the macula, and retrolental tissue. Although exudative retinal detachments have been described after cryotherapy during scleral buckling procedures, to our knowledge, this observation has not been reported after cryotherapy in retinopathy of prematurity. Cryotherapy of the cervix was made in 40 patients for chronic cervicitis, and the thickness of the ice zone around the probe was measured in function of treatment time, under standard cooling conditions. A rare case of rhinosporidiosis found in a 12-year old girl is described. A comprehensive clinical picture is presented and a histological verification of the diagnosis is given. The treatment protocol included surgery, cryotherapy and antimycotic drugs which led to complete recovery.

Using the labeled microsphere impaction technique, we studied the effect of peripheral panretinal transscleral cryocoagulation in pigmented rabbits. One eye of each animal received peripheral cryocoagulation, and the fellow eye of the same animal was used as the control. Seventeen patients with symmetrical stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and plus disease as described in the International Classification of ROP had one eye randomized to cryotherapy and the other to control. A 55-year-old black woman with an eight-year history of prurigo nodularis was treated successfully with blistering cryotherapy. Cryotherapy resulted in smooth macule formation and afforded extended relief of pruritus. Several standard modalities of treatment had been used previously and had resulted in only partial relief of symptoms and minimal reduction of nodule size. This case demonstrates that cryotherapy can be a useful therapeutic alternative for prurigo nodularis.
