Stomatal opening is crucial for gas exchange, but it unavoidably offers invasion by pathogens. In response, plants close stomata to prevent pathogen entry, while the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pto) produces coronatine (COR), a jasmonate (JA) mimic, to counteract this plant response. Here, we demonstrate that by COR, Pto exploits CYP707A1 activation in Arabidopsis thaliana, encoding an enzyme that degrades abscisic acid, essential for stomatal closure. Notably, COR-induction of CYP707A1 is absent in other Brassicaceae species, such as Capsella rubella and Eutrema

BACKGROUND: First to third instars of Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) feed on the lower surface of leaves, while fourth and fifth instars gregariously consume leaves of Trichosanthes anguina L. After defoliating, the caterpillar also attacks flowers and fruits of the plant and finally, results in loss of crop yield. Therefore, behavioral responses of D. indica adults were investigated to volatiles from undamaged (UD), insect-damaged (ID, plants after feeding by D. indica larvae) and jasmonic acid (JA) treated T. anguina plants.
RESULTS: Females showed attraction to volati

The stearoyl-ACP desaturase (SACPD) is a key enzyme in the regulation of saturated to unsaturated fatty acid ratio, playing a crucial role in regulating membrane stability and fluidity, as well as photosynthesis efficiency, which makes it an important research focus in crop species. This study reports the characterization and molecular cloning of pale dwarf (pad), a new tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) T-DNA recessive mutant, which exhibits a dwarf and chlorotic phenotype. Functional studies of the T-DNA tagged gene were conducted, including phylogenetic analysis, expression and metabolomic an

Fusarium yellows resistant and susceptible lines in Brassica rapa showed different salicylic acid responses; the resistant line showed a similar response to previous reports, but the susceptible line differed. Fusarium yellows caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans (Foc) is an important disease. Previous studies showed that genes related to salicylic acid (SA) response were more highly induced following Foc infection in Brassica rapa Fusarium yellows resistant lines than susceptible lines. However, SA-induced genes have not been identified at the whole genome level and it was unclear

Sucrose non-fermenting-1-related protein kinase-1 (SnRK1) belongs to a family of evolutionary conserved kinases with orthologs in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeasts (SnF1) to mammals (AMP-Activated kinase). These kinases sense energy deficits caused by nutrient limitation or stress and coordinate the required adaptations to maintain energy homeostasis and survival. In plants, SnRK1 is a global regulator of plant metabolism and is also involved in abiotic stress responses. Its role in the response to biotic stress, however, is only starting to be uncovered. Here we studied the effect of altere

It has been reported in several pathosystems that disease resistance can vary in leaves at different stages. However, how general this leaf stage-associated resistance is, and the molecular mechanism(s) underlying it, remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of leaf stage on basal resistance, effector-triggered immunity (ETI) and nonhost resistance, using eight pathosystems involving the hosts Arabidopsis thaliana, Nicotiana tabacum, and N. benthamiana and the pathogens Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000, and Xanthomonas ory

Reference gene evaluation and selection are necessary steps in gene expression analysis, especially in new plant varieties, through reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). Hedera helix L. is an important traditional medicinal plant recorded in European Pharmacopoeia. Research on gene expression in H. helix has not been widely explored, and no RT-qPCR studies have been reported. Thus, it is important and necessary to identify and validate suitable reference genes to for normalizing RT-qPCR results. In our study, 14 candidate protein-coding reference genes were selected. Thei

Signaling networks among multiple phytohormones fine-tune plant defense responses to insect herbivore attack. Previously, it was reported that the synergistic combination of ethylene (ET) and jasmonic acid (JA) was required for accumulation of the maize insect resistance1 (mir1) gene product, a cysteine (Cys) proteinase that is a key defensive protein against chewing insect pests in maize (Zea mays). However, this study suggests that mir1-mediated resistance to corn leaf aphid (CLA; Rhopalosiphum maidis), a phloem sap-sucking insect pest, is independent of JA but regulated by the ET-signaling

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Estrogens are important effectors of reproduction and are critical for upregulating female reproductive behavior or lordosis in females. In addition to the importance of transcriptional regulation of genes by 17β-estradiol-bound estrogen receptors (ER), extranuclear signal transduction cascades such as protein kinase A (PKA) are also important in regulating female sexual receptivity. GPR30 (G-protein coupled receptor 30), also known as GPER1, a putative membrane ER (mER), is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds 17β-estradiol with an affinity that is similar to that possesse

Antimicrobial cationic peptides (AMPs) are ubiquitous small proteins used by living cells to defend against a wide spectrum of pathogens. Their amphipathic property helps their interaction with negatively charged cellular membrane of the pathogen causing cell lysis and death. AMPs also modulate signaling pathway(s) and cellular processes in animal models; however, little is known of cellular processes other than the pathogen-lysis phenomenon modulated by AMPs in plants. An engineered heterologous AMP, msrA3, expressed in potato was previously shown to cause resistance of the transgenic plants

G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER), also named GPR30, has been previously identified in the female reproductive system. In this study, GPER expression was found in the female rat myometrium by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunocytochemistry. Using GPER-selective ligands, we assessed the effects of the GPER activation on resting membrane potential and cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) in rat myometrial cells, as well as on contractility of rat uterine strips. G-1, a specific GPER agonist, induced a concentration-dependent depolarization and increase

Addition of ferrocene to solutions of alkali metal hexamethyldisilazides M(HMDS) in arenes (in which M=Na, K, Rb, Cs) allows the subsequent crystallization of the homologous series of compounds [{(Me(3)Si)(2)NM}(2) (Cp(2)Fe)](infinity) (1-4). Similar reactions using LiHMDS led to the recrystallization of the starting materials. The crystal structures of 1-4 reveal the formation of one-dimensional chains composed of dimeric [{M(HMDS)}(2)] aggregates, which are bridged through neutral ferrocene molecules by eta(5)-cation-pi interactions. In addition, compounds 3 and 4 also contain interchain ago

Endogenous signal molecules such as jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) play an important role in induced resistance against pathogen infection and insect herbivory. In rice seedlings, JA is an effective inducer of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) against infection of blast fungus (Pyricularia grisea). To gain further insights into JA-mediated defense signaling pathways, we isolated and characterized a pathogen- and JA-induced rice gene (JAmyb) that encodes a Myb transcription factor. The JAmyb gene was induced within 1 day after fungal infection in resistant and susceptible interacti

The plant hormone jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile) reallocates resources from growth towards induced defenses upon microbial or herbivore attacks or other environmental threats. JA-Ile and its precursor jasmonic acid (JA) undergo complex enzymatic turnover that shape hormonal dynamics for optimal signaling. JA-Ile is inactivated through gradual oxidation by CYP94 monooxygenases, followed by 12-OH-JA-Ile deconjugation towards 12-OH-JA. 12-OH-JA was believed to originate also from direct JA hydroxylation by JAO/JOX dioxygenases. Here we investigate the nature and origins of hydroxy-JAs and their de

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of plant growth, development, and immunity. However, their role in kiwifruit and other perennial fruit trees remains poorly characterized. Here, we demonstrate that Ac-miR156a functions as a negative regulator of kiwifruit resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). In the resistant cultivar "Jinkui," Ac-miR156a expression was significantly suppressed upon Psa infection, whereas it was markedly induced in the susceptible cultivar "Hongyang." Overexpression of miR156a increased kiwifruit susceptibility to Psa, while silencing miR156a via short-

Gamma Secretase Inhibitors (GSIs) effectively block oncogenic Notch homolog-1 (NOTCH1), a characteristic feature of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemias (T-ALL). However, their clinical application has been stalled by the induction of severe gastrointestinal toxicity resulting from the inhibition of NOTCH signaling in the gut, which translates into increased goblet cell differentiation. Genome-wide CRISPR loss-of-function screen in the colon cancer cell line LS174T identified the neddylation pathway as a main regulator of goblet cell differentiation upon NOTCH1 inhibition. Consistently, pharma

The intercropping of tea plants with Chinese chestnut has been recognized as an advanced and eco-friendly cultivation method that enhances the self-resistance of tea plants. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plant hormones and CsAFS1 based on previous findings and to reveal the mechanism by which CsAFS1 enhances the resistance of tea plants intercropped with Chinese chestnut. In this study, an α-farnesene synthase (AFS) was identified in tea plants intercropped with Chinese chestnut through transcriptome sequencing. This gene was actively expressed during cold and under

Grapevine downy mildew, caused by Plasmopara viticola, poses significant threats to viticulture, necessitating sustainable alternatives to chemical fungicides. This study investigates the efficacy of exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), a brassinosteroid, in enhancing disease resistance across two grape cultivars: susceptible Vitis vinifera Cabernet Sauvignon and resistant Ecolly. EBR application reduced P. viticola colonization in both cultivars, suppressing hyphal growth and sporulation. In Cabernet Sauvignon, EBR delayed pathogen establishment by modulating stomatal closure and boosting anti

Peramivir, a Neuraminidase inhibitor used for influenza A or B treatment, is currently marketed in the form of injections globally. However, Peramivir injections result in widespread systemic distribution, with only 3-9 % of the drug reaching the nasal cavity and pharyngeal mucus (key sites of action). In contrast, inhaled formulations can directly reach the site of absorption or action, leading to rapid onset of effect. This approach circumvents the first-pass hepatic metabolism, reduces the dosage required, minimizes systemic exposure, and may mitigate or avoid certain adverse drug reactions
