Arachnoid cysts are lined by arachnoid membranes and filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Etiologically, they are thought to be due to maldevelopment of the arachnoid or secondary to trauma or infection. Postnatally, many are asymptomatic and remain quiescent for years, although others expand and cause symptoms by compressing adjacent brain and/or expanding the overlying skull. Being congenital, it should be possible to identify them in the fetus, and this has proved to be so. But are they anatomically similar and do they behave the same as those detected postnatally? Fifteen fetuses with fluid-fi

A 46-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of progressive left-arm numbness. A cyst below the left hemidiaphragm was discovered incidentally when a CT scan was performed to examine the thymus for a suspected tumor. A thymic mass was found. MRI indicated that the cyst contained proteinaceous fluid. The thymoma was approached through a median sternotomy and resected, but the cyst was found to be infradiaphragmatic. A separate, left paraspinal incision was made to access the retroperitoneum, and the cyst was resected. Histologic examination showed that the cyst was bronchogenic in origin

A 67-year-old man was referred to our surgical clinic for evaluation of an abnormal shadow on the chest X-ray examination. CT scan and MRI revealed a tumor in the posterior mediastinum and destruction of the pedicle and intraspinal invagination by the tumor. The tumor in a paravertebral area are linked with a vertebral canal through a destructed intervertebral foramen. MRI showed that the tumor was a cyst which contained fluid. On thoracotomy a hen's egg sized cyst was found in the posterior mediastinum, the cyst was excised. Pathological diagnosis was a perineurial cyst. This case was clearly

Magnetic resonance imaging features of three benign cystic lumbosacral schwannomas, which showed multiple fluid-fluid levels, are described. One of the tumours showed bone destruction with fluid-fluid levels that closely mimicked an aneurysmal bone cyst. Pathological examination confirmed haemorrhage as the cause of fluid-fluid levels in the tumours. Though a rare finding, fluid-fluid levels with bone destruction can also be caused by nerve sheath tumours and hence must be included in the list of differential diagnoses of spinal tumours.

Simple bone cysts (SBC) are pseudocysts occurring less commonly in the maxillofacial region. The uncertain and unclear etiopathogenesis led to numerous synonyms to refer this particular cyst. These cysts are devoid of an epithelial lining and are usually empty or contain blood or straw-colored fluid. In jaws initially it mimics a periapical cyst and later can lead to cortical bone expansion warranting for radical approach, which is seldom required. SBC is predominantly diagnosed in first two decades of life. Here we report a case of solitary bone cyst mimicking a periapical cyst of a mandibula

A 5-year old boy presented with an arachnoid cyst in the middle cranial fossa with mild midline shift manifesting as headache and loss of activity. Computed tomography (CT) showed subdural hygroma. Burr-hole drainage was carried out and symptoms were improved postoperatively. However, recollection of subdural hygroma was found on follow-up CT 3 weeks after subdural drainage. He underwent craniotomy, and tearing of the outer wall of the arachnoid cyst was observed. The ruptured cyst wall was tightly closed by arachnoidplasty to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Arachnoidplasty was effective

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomographic imaging (CT) characteristics of intracranial intra-arachnoid cysts in six dogs are described. Of the six dogs, three were less than one year of age and 4 were males. Five of the six dogs weighed less than 11 kg. Five cysts were located in the quadrigeminal cistern. On CT images, the intracranial intra-arachnoid cysts had sharply defined margins, contained fluid isodense to CSF and did not enhance following i.v. administration of contrast. On MRI images, the intracranial intra-arachnoid cysts were extra-axial, contained fluid isointense

Parathyroid cysts are uncommon: about 200 cases have been reported. They can be functional (i.e., accompanied by signs of primary hyperparathyroidism), or nonfunctional. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult, although it has become increasingly frequent with the use of ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Fluid of parathyroid cysts is almost invariably watery, colorless, and crystal clear, which should cause clinical suspicion. However, definitive diagnosis relies on the demonstration of high parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in the fluid. Puncture may cure nonfunctioning cysts, but surg

A 74-year-old woman presented with dyspnoea and fever on a background of a large hepatic cyst thought to be stable in size. During her admission, she developed worsening shortness of breath. An echocardiogram revealed severely impaired cardiac output due to external compression by the hepatic cyst, which had grown rapidly. This was drained under ultrasound guidance and cultures of this fluid grew Pseudomonas aeruginosa: the organism responsible for the persistence of this giant hepatic cyst.

Craniopharyngiomas are benign cystic para-hypophyseal tumors often associated with hypopituitarism and visual-field abnormalities. Their therapy by surgery and external beam radiotherapy is imperfect. The intracavitary instillation of beta-emitting colloid radiopharmaceuticals into the cysts permits the delivery of far higher radiation doses to the cyst lining than is possible by external beam radiotherapy. This technique permits destruction of the lining epithelium with resultant elimination of cyst fluid formation and cyst shrinkage in up to 80% of cases.

Limitation of morphological diagnostic and possible misinterpretations are shown in a patient with anamnestic ovarian endometriosis. In cases of "chocolate cysts" it is necessary to differentiate between ovarian endometriosis and functional cysts. Hints for the existence of a functional cyst are an atypical past history or perioperative findings. Biochemical analysis of the cyst fluid may lead to a correct diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic pseudocyst is a very common benign cystic lesion of the pancreas. It develops in 5-15% of patients with peri-pancreat … he epigastric region. USG guided aspiration of the cyst revealed mixed purulent brownish fluid. The cyst fluid was negative for mucin stain and contained high amylase level with low CEA level, suggesting infected pancreatic pseudocyst. An open drainage procedure was considered through an upper midline laparotomy. Aspiration of the pus mixed cyst fluid along …

Three patients with congenital cystic eye are described. Clinical manifestations of the condition were absence of the eyeball with massive cystic lesions occupying the orbit and protrusion of eyelids. Contralateral eye may be involved. This abnormality can be associated with systemic developmental abnormalities. Histopathologically there was no ocular structure in the orbit. The cyst wall consisted of two layers. The outer layer consisted of fibrous connective tissue and the inner layer of neuroectodermal tissue with a high level of antibodies to neuronspecific enolase. The cyst contained ligh

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular ependymal cysts (ECs) are rare, histologically benign neuroepithelial cysts. Most of these cysts are clinically silent and discovered incidentally. Rarely, they become symptomatic, leading to obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid circulation. ECs located inside the ventricles may manifest with signs of increased intracranial pressure.

The main characteristic of polycystic kidney disease is the development of multiple fluid-filled renal cysts. The discovery of mislocalized sodium-potassium pump (Na,K-ATPase) in the apical membrane of cyst-lining epithelia alluded to reversal of polarity as a possible explanation for the fluid secretion. The topic of apical Na,K-ATPase in cysts remains controversial. We investigated the localization of the Na,K-ATPase and assessed the apical-basolateral polarization of cyst-lining epithelia by means of immunohistochemistry in kidney tissue from six polycystic kidney disease patients undergoin

The usefulness of echo-guided percutaneous cyst puncture in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts was assessed in a study of 45 patients referred to the Department of Tropical Medicine at Kasr El Aini Hospital in Cairo. All subjects had at least one hepatic cyst detected by ultrasonography (54 cysts in all), and 42 patients had positive results in serological tests for antibodies to Echinococcus granulosus. The majority of cysts were in the right hepatic lobe (40 cysts), were anechoic (51), and were rounded and smooth (49). All 45 active cysts (44 anechoic, rounded, and smooth;

Background: Although tuberculosis (TB) can affect any organ, ruptured Baker's cyst due to TB is an uncommon phenomenon. Case Summary: A young lady presented with unilateral atraumatic knee and calf pain and swelling. Pain characteristics shared both mechanical and inflammatory natures. Constitutional features for TB were evident. Based on history, clinical examination, and initial investigation, a ruptured Baker's cyst with septic knee was suspected. Ultrasound-guided aspiration followed by a synovial fluid study revealed inflammatory fluid with high adenosine deaminase level but without any b

A 14-year-old spayed female Miniature Pinscher presented with tongue curling, dysphagia, hypersalivation, and sublingual gland swelling. Comprehensive evaluation, including neurologic and musculoskeletal examinations, blood work, and urinalysis, revealed no abnormalities other than tongue-related signs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a multilobed cystic structure in the occipito-atlanto-axial joint, compressing the right hypoglossal canal. The lesion appeared cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-like on T1-weighted and T2-weighted images, and hyperintense compared with CSF on fluid-attenuated
