Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease that results in renal failure. CNS manifestations are rare. We report a 29-year man who presented with a cervical myelopathy due to cystinosis. The complete amino acid sequence of versutoxin, a lethal neurotoxic polypeptide isolated from the venom of male and female funnel-web spiders of the species Atrax versutus, was determined. Sequencing was performed in a gas-phase protein sequencer by automated Edman degradation of the S-carboxymethylated toxin and fragments of it produced by reaction with CNBr. We present here two girls with cystinosis initially diagnosed as Bartter syndrome. Both cases were admitted with hypokalemic, hypochloremic alkalosis. Their proximal tubular functions, ophthalmologic and bone marrow examinations were normal. They were started on therapies with the diagnosis of Bartter syndrome. The aminoacid contents of native chestnut and its powdered form were studied. It was found that it has low cystine and methionine contents but if it is supplemented accordingly, the chestnut pulp can well be used for infant feeding.
