Capture and analysis of radiation dose reports for radiology.

Radiographic imaging systems can produce records of exposure and dose parameters for each patient. A variety of file formats are in use including plain text, bit map images showing pictures of written text and radiation dose structured reports as text or extended markup language files. Whilst some of this information is available with image data on the hospital picture archive and communication system, access is restricted to individual patient records, thereby making it difficult to locate multiple records for the same scan protocol. This study considers the exposure records and dose reports

CECIL: a database for storing and retrieving clinical and molecular information on patients with Alport syndrome.

CECIL is a database that stores clinical and molecular information on patients with Alport syndrome. The clinical component of CECIL is specific to Alport syndrome; the component that stores and manipulates molecular data can be used for any disease caused by a gene mutation, such as cystic fibrosis. While offering the ability to retrieve patient data through compound Boolean queries, CECIL also offers the ability to manipulate sequence information in various ways. In particular, CECIL can perform an augmented sequence alignment of an abnormal (patient) DNA sequence with a reference sequence.

roadDB: An R package for exploring early human prehistory and environments with the ROCEEH Out of Africa Database.

Macroscale and interdisciplinary approaches are emerging as central paradigms in the study of human evolution, as demonstrated by a growing body of large-scale, data-driven research. This development is paralleled by an expanding ecosystem of R packages that provide access to paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions, as well as advanced tools for spatial and temporal analysis and modeling. However, within this computational framework, direct programmatic access to comprehensive archaeological and anthropological data remains limited. We present roadDB, an R package that enables str

FedGSCA: Medical Federated Learning With Global Sample Selector and Client Adaptive Adjuster Under Label Noise.

Federated Learning (FL) emerged as a solution for collaborative medical image classification while preserving data privacy. However, label noise, which arises from inter-institutional data variability, can cause training instability and degrade model performance. Existing FL methods struggle with noise heterogeneity and the imbalance in medical data. Motivated by these challenges, we propose FedGSCA, a novel framework for enhancing robustness in noisy medical FL. FedGSCA introduces a Global Sample Selector that aggregates noise knowledge from all clients, effectively addressing noise heterogen

A Comprehensive Framework for the Prediction of Intra-Operative Hypotension.

In this paper, the problem of triggering early warning for intra-operative hypotension (IOH) is addressed. Recent studies on the Hypotension Prediction Index have demonstrated a gap between the results presented during model development and clinical evaluation. Thus, there is a need for better collaboration between data scientists and clinicians who need to agree on a common basis to evaluate those models. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework for IOH prediction: to address several issues inherent to the commonly used fixed-time-to-onset approach in the literature, a sliding wind

An integrated individual patient-level database from JCOG trials in esophageal cancer: A research platform (JCOG2512A).

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide robust evidence in esophageal cancer. Nonetheless, many clinically relevant questions cannot be fully addressed within a single trial. Nationwide registries provide complementary real-world insights but are limited by heterogeneity in patient selection, treatment practices, data quality, data completeness, and follow-up, which constrain the detailed evaluation of time-dependent outcomes and disease-specific endpoints. To address these limitations, the Japan Esophageal Oncology Group of the Japan Clinical Oncology Group established JCOG2512A, an integ

Improving crash data quality by identifying misclassified alcohol-involved crashes using NLP on narrative data.

INTRODUCTION: Road traffic crashes remain a leading cause of fatalities worldwide, underscoring the need for accurate data to guide prevention strategies and evidence-based policymaking. However, crash databases often suffer from misclassification, underreporting, and inconsistencies, particularly in alcohol-involved cases, which limits the reliability of safety analyses. METHOD: This study addresses this issue by identifying and quantifying Misclassified Alcohol-Involved Crashes (MAICs) using a Natural Language Processing (NLP) framework based on the BERT model. The framework analyzed 371,06

A multicenter COVID-19 database from four waves in the south metropolitan area of Barcelona, Catalonia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been characterized by a series of epidemiological waves, each defined by distinct viral variants and shifting transmission dynamics. Examining these waves is essential for understanding temporal changes in case incidence, hospitalization rates, mortality patterns, and healthcare system capacity. In this work, we present a database from a multicenter COVID-19 study including data of 5813 patients from four waves of the pandemic in the south metropolitan area of Barcelona. The database contains information collected at hospital admission and during patient follow-up whi

Annular Prior Prompt Learning for Medical Images Segmentation.

Excellent performance has been achieved on medical image segmentation. Still, existing algorithms perform relatively poorly for annular objects with high intra-class variability and inter-class similarity, which easily leads to regional confusion, especially in medical images with annular regions. In this paper, we first propose an annular prior prompt learning method based on MedSAM, coined APPL, which not only can strengthen the learning for annular region features, but also effectively handles the regional confusion caused by high intra-class variability and inter-class similarity. Specific

Trends in Medicines Discontinuation and Implications for Access in Brazil (2014-2024).

PURPOSE: The World Health Organization (WHO) began recognizing drug shortages as a global issue in 2014, impacting health systems and patient care. Shortages arise from supply chain disruptions, production issues, and mismatches between supply and demand, aggravated by insufficient mechanisms for forecasting and communication. METHODS: The study analyzed medicine discontinuation notifications in Brazil from 2014 to 2024 from a public secondary database. Data was downloaded, organized, and cleaned using Excel, incorporating ATC classification and verification of medicines listed on the Nationa

Self-tuned healthy homogeneous core: Addressing heterogeneities in biomedical datasets.

Heterogeneity within healthy biomedical populations can degrade disease-classification performance by distorting the decision boundary between healthy and diseased cohorts. In this study, the healthy cohort is decomposed into two subtypes: borderline healthy samples, defined operationally as healthy-labeled subjects that lie closer to the diseased distribution in the learned feature space, and a representative subset termed the self-tuned Homogeneous Healthy Core (H2C), characterized by high intra-class homogeneity. Using an information-theoretic framework, it is shown that training on H2C yie

Reliability-aware transfer learning with BEATs for variable-length respiratory sound classification: a patient-disjoint evaluation in two public databases.

Random or central placement of respiratory sounds within padded windows can cause length-based masks to exclude recorded audio. We developed an exact support-propagation interface for the pretrained bidirectional encoder representation from audio transformers (BEATs), mapping sample support through filterbank frames and patch tokens to attention and pooling masks. We evaluated this interface alongside adaptation strategies, computational costs, probability calibration and class-conditional coverage. The study included 15 987 events from the International Conference on Biomedical and Health Inf

Building a National Interoperable Rare Eye Disease Data Warehouse: Methodological Framework and Implementation Report From the French Rare Eye Disease Database (FREDD) Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Rare eye diseases are characterized by low prevalence, clinical heterogeneity, and fragmented data collection, which limit the reliability of analysis results and multicenter research. In France, the development of health data warehouses is strictly regulated by national data protection authorities. While international initiatives aim to harmonize rare disease registries, capturing hyperspecialized, multimodal clinical records and ophthalmology-specific imaging within a fully compliant and sustainable infrastructure remains a major operational challenge. OBJECTIVE: This study aims

C-UQ: Conflict-based uncertainty quantification-A case study in lung cancer classification.

Uncertainty quantification is crucial in deep learning, especially in medical diagnostics, to measure model prediction confidence and ensure reliable clinical decisions. This study introduces a novel conflict-based uncertainty quantification approach, applied as a case study in lung cancer classification, leveraging Dempster-Shafer Theory in conjunction with Deep Ensemble methods. The proposed method aggregates predictions from multiple neural network models using conflict as an uncertainty measure. By converting softmax outputs into Basic Belief Assignments and applying the rule of combinatio

Modality Imbalance? Dynamic Multi-Modal Knowledge Distillation in Automatic Alzheimer's Disease Recognition.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), as the most prevalent form of dementia, necessitates early identification and treatment for the critical enhancement of patients' quality of life. Recent studies strive to explore advanced machine learning approaches with multiple information cues, such as speech and text, to automatically and precisely detect this disease from conversations. However, these multi-modality-based approaches often suffer from a modality-imbalance challenge that leads to performance degradation. That is, the multi-modal model performs worse than the best mono-modal model, although the for

Developing machine-learning-based amyloidogenicity predictors with Cross-Beta DB.

INTRODUCTION: The importance of protein amyloidogenesis, associated with various diseases and functional roles, has driven the creation of computational predictors of amyloidogenicity. The accuracy of these predictors, particularly those utilizing artificial intelligence technologies, heavily depends on the quality of the data. METHODS: We built Cross-Beta DB, a database containing high-quality data on known cross-β amyloids formed under natural conditions. We used it to train and benchmark several machine-learning (ML) algorithms to predict amyloid-forming potential of proteins. RESULTS: We
