Characters in movies have the potential to influence perceptions of how people see themselves. Deaf adolescents who have little opportunity to interact with Deaf peers or family members may be particularly drawn to Deaf people they see in the media. How the media portrays Deaf people may impact Deaf adolescents' self-perceptions of and language preferences. Yet little is known about the ways Deaf people are portrayed in movies, particularly films developed outside of the United States and not in English. In this study, we utilized content analysis to explore the portrayal of Deaf characters in

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous otomastoiditis is a rare and serious infection that most often occurs in association with pulmonary involvement. I … ient underwent for pulmonary and osseous tuberculosis. While the clinical course was favourable but deafness occurred subsequently.
CONCLUSION: An association of P. aeruginosa NOE and tuberculous otomastoiditis is a highly exceptional event.

This study investigated writing achievement in a Canadian cohort of school-aged deaf learners (N = 64). In the current context, in which most students are educated in inclusive settings and use hearing technologies, the goal was to establish whether outcomes approach those of hearing-age peers and identify demographic factors (e.g., gender, grade, additional disability, home language, hearing loss, hearing technology, auditory perception) influencing performance. Results indicated that a high percentage of participants performed in the average range or higher on a standardized, norm-referenced

In recent years there has been a growing interest in research about the different ways of processing and consolidating cognition in deaf people. It is known that hearing loss can lead to differences in some executive functions like control inhibitory or working memory. This literature review describes executive functions in deaf people and how they could be evaluated through technological devices complementing traditional assessments, like neuropsychological batteries. We identified biometric devices, digital and physical interfaces, and software from the literature, whose goal is to design or

OBJECTIVES: Numerous health disparities are documented in deaf population research, but few empirical sleep assessments exist for this under-served population, despite knowledge that sleep contributes to physical and mental health disparities. We sought to document subjective and objective sleep in deaf adults with cross-sectional and prospective measures.
METHODS: Twenty deaf participants completed validated sleep and mental health questionnaires, 2-weeks of nightly sleep diaries and continuous wrist-worn actigraphy monitoring, and 1-week of nightly, reduced-montage EEG recordings.
RESULTS:

Navigating the world relies on understanding progressive sequences of multisensory events across time. Early deaf (ED) individuals are more precise in visual detection of space and motion than their normal hearing (NH) counterparts. However, whether ED individuals show altered multisensory temporal processing abilities is less clear. According to the connectome model, brain development depends on experience, and therefore the lack of audition may affect how the brain responds to remaining senses and how they are functionally connected. We used a temporal order judgment (TOJ) task to examine mu

We have previously shown that deaf signers recruit partially different brain regions during simple arithmetic compared to a group of hearing non-signers, despite similar performance. Specifically, hearing individuals show more widespread activation in brain areas that have been related to the verbal system of numerical processing, i.e., the left angular and inferior frontal gyrus, whereas deaf individuals engaged brain areas that have been related to the quantity system of numerical processing, i.e., the right horizontal intraparietal sulcus. This indicates that compared to hearing non-signers

A 31-year-old man presented with a history of extensive thickened skin of the palms and soles since the age of 7. The patient reported difficulty in ambulating and in using his hands secondary to his skin condition and associated pain. He also reported being seen by numerous specialists in the past for his hands, feet, and fingernails. He tried various topical medications, none of which were successful in minimizing the lesions on the hands and feet. Pertinent review of systems was positive for complete deafness diagnosed at 9 months of age. The patient did not speak and used sign language to …

This is a case study of a deaf child with Tourette's Disorder (TD). Hearing parents and mental health clinicians unfamiliar with typical behaviors of deaf children may have difficulties differentiating the clinical presentation of symptoms of TD from the effects of deafness, as well as in implementing appropriate interventions. This case study reports the history, symptoms, diagnostic process, and treatment interventions. This is relevant for furthering the clinical knowledge of mental health professionals working with Deaf, deaf, and hard-of-hearing children and adolescents.

We examined acquisition of grapheme-phoneme correspondences by 4 deaf and hard-of-hearing preschoolers using instruction from a curriculum designed specifically for this population supplemented by Visual Phonics. Learning was documented through a multiple baseline across content design as well as descriptive analyses. Preschoolers who used sign language and had average to low-average receptive vocabulary skills and varied speech perception skills acquired all correspondences after instruction. They were also able to use that knowledge while reading words. On a posttest, the children were able

Pupillary dilation in response to sound stimuli is well established and is generally considered to represent a startle reflex to sound. We believe that the auditory-pupillary response represents not only a simple startle reflex to sound stimuli but also represents a reaction to stimulation of other sense organs, such as otolith organs. Eight young healthy volunteers without a history of hearing and equilibrium problems and 12 subjects with bilateral deafness participated in this study. Computer pupillography was used to analyze the auditory-pupillary responses of both eyes in all subjects. We …

Before the development of cochlear implants, the acquisition of oral and written language and consequently good school levels were barely expected from profoundly deaf children. Since then it has been largely demonstrated that with cochlear implants these objectives are realistic provided these children are implanted early, before the age of 4 years old and receive appropriated speech therapy. We present here the rehabilitation program proposed at our center to the very young users of cochlear implants. This program results from analysis and observations developed during 12 years of speech the
