OBJECTIVES: In a multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind trial, we showed that acquired infections in intubated patients were reduced by the combination of topical polymyxin plus tobramycin and nasal mupirocin plus chlorhexidine body wash. BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces (DHPs) are reusable invasive medical devices that must be cleaned, decontaminated, lubricated and steam sterilized after use. DHPs have a complex internal design including narrow channels, contamination of which can compromise sterilization. DHPs are not designed for routine disassembly, making cleaning/decontamination efficacy difficult to monitor. After last year's anthrax attacks, EDs at Capital Health System in Trenton, NJ, had to address decontamination of large numbers of patients. Patients who didn't require decontamination were sent to the hospital's employee health facility so they could bypass the ED.
