Intra-uterine transmission of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis in subclinically affected red deer (Cervus elaphus).

AIM: To determine the rate of transmission of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis (M. ptb) from hind to fetus in utero, and the risk of transmission from dam to fawn via infected colostrum and milk in subclinically affected red deer hinds. METHODS: Hinds were sourced from farms in Otago or Southland and selected for the study if they were positive to the immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) modified enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (Paralisa) and exhibited no clinical signs of Johne's disease. The hinds (n=35) were sent to a deer slaughter premises (DSP; n=31) or were killed on-farm (n=4)…

PrP(CWD) lymphoid cell targets in early and advanced chronic wasting disease of mule deer.

Up to 15% of free-ranging mule deer in northeastern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, USA, are afflicted with a prion disease, or transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), known as chronic wasting disease (CWD). CWD is similar to a subset of TSEs including scrapie and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in which the abnormal prion protein isoform, PrP(CWD), accumulates in lymphoid tissue. Experimental scrapie studies have indicated that this early lymphoid phase is an important constituent of prion replication interposed between mucosal entry and central nervous system accumulation. To ide…

Synthesis of early pregnancy factor using red deer (Cervus elaphus) as a delayed implantation model.

PURPOSE: This study measured serum early pregnancy factor (EPF) in pregnant red deer (Cervus elaphus) and ascertained whether EPF synthesis is associated with implantation. METHODS: Serial serum samples were taken from mated hinds up to 42 days postconception and analyzed for EPF activity using the rosette inhibition test. EPF activity was then correlated with calving records and stages of preimplantation development. RESULTS: EPF was detected in all pregnant animals, with a twin pregnancy giving increased EPF activity. Three animals gave an EPF response following fertilization but failed to…

Population differences in benzodiazepine sensitive male scent-induced analgesia in the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus.

We compared opioid and nonopioid involvement in the mediation of scent-induced analgesia in two populations of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus; P. m. artemisiae from a mainland region and P. m. angustus from a small marine island. Exposure to bedding taken from the soiled home cage of an isolated (dominant aggressive) male resident elicited a significant increase in the nociceptive responses of male deer mice from mixed sex pairs, with the island population of mice displaying significantly greater analgesic responses than the mainland animals. In the mainland population of mice, the large am…

Pathogenesis of Trypanosoma brucei infection in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). V. Macrophage ultrastructure and function.

Macrophage numbers increased in the spleen, liver, testes, heart, and kidney of deer mice infected for seven to ten weeks with Trypanosoma brucei EATRO 110. The macrophages were activated as indicated by their increased size and significant increases in numbers of cell organelles including profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum (which also increased in length), mitochondria, primary and secondary lysosomes, bundles of Golgi's apparatus, and free lysosomes compared to macrophages from control mice. Some macrophages representing epithelioid cells have even greater numbers of organelles than the…

Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) as an intermediate host of Taenia lynciscapreoli in Kazakhstan: molecular evidence.

Taenia lynciscapreoli was recently reported from Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in northern Kazakhstan, but its intermediate host in the country remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate, using molecular methods, whether Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) serve as intermediate hosts of T. lynciscapreoli in Kazakhstan. Fifteen Siberian roe deer were legally harvested in three hunting grounds in north-central and eastern Kazakhstan between September 2024 and December 2025. Taenia metacestodes were detected exclusively in the lungs of four animals, all from a single hunting ground.…

Species-origin identification of the deer in the Purtier Placenta Live Stem Cell Therapy by DNA typing.

Purtier Placenta Live Stem Cell Therapy is a food supplement by Riway Singapore Pte. Ltd., claimed to contain living deer placenta stem cells together with 11 other active ingredients. It is also promoted as maintaining health and youthfulness and as being supported by numerous patents and research trials. Individual ingredients are accompanied by many other statements implying that Purtier Placenta can alleviate or cure diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, none of these claims is traceable in clinical trial registries, and the mechanism allowing stem cel…

Epidemiology of Brucellosis Among Deer in China From 1978 to 2025: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Brucellosis is a major zoonosis affecting livestock production and public health. With the rapid expansion of sika and red deer farming in China, reports of deer brucellosis have increased. We searched CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, PubMed, and ScienceDirect and conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, including 47 studies published from January 1978 to September 2025 (54,699 samples). The pooled seroprevalence was 16.3% (95% CI: 10.9-22.4), with substantial heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses suggested an overall increase after 2000 and higher estimates in major deer-farming areas of northern …

Exposure to toxic trace metals is negatively associated with testis mass in wild male roe deer.

Although trace metal toxicity has been extensively studied in laboratory settings, its long-term effects on wildlife are poorly understood. Most wild animals are likely to be exposed to low doses of trace metals throughout their lives; however, whether such chronic exposure affects fitness-related traits in natural populations remains to be investigated. In this study, we tested the relationships between trace metal burden and sex hormones, primary and secondary sexual traits in wild male roe deer. Using samples collected from 71 hunted males, we measured the hair and liver concentrations of v…

Rigid and stable nitroxide spin label for high-resolution distance measurements on proteins by DEER experiments.

The distance distributions between two site-specifically anchored spin labels in a protein, measured by pulsed electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR or DEER), provide rich sources of structural and conformational restraints on the proteins or their complexes. The rigid connection of the nitroxide spin label to the protein improves the accuracy and precision of distance measurement. We report a new spin labelling approach by formation of thioester bond between nitroxide (NO) spin label, NOAI (NO spin labels activated by acetylimidazole), and a protein thiol, and this spin labeling method h…

Catecholamine synthesis and secretion by adrenal chromaffin cells are reduced in deer mice native to high altitude.

Hypoxia at high altitude can constrain aerobic metabolism and elicit physiological responses that are detrimental to health and fitness. Responses of the sympathoadrenal system are vital for coping with acute hypoxia but can become maladaptive with prolonged activation in chronic hypoxia. We examined how adrenal function is altered in high-altitude populations of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), which have evolved to overcome chronic hypoxia in their native environment. High- and low-altitude populations were each born and raised in common laboratory conditions and then acclimated to normox…

Microbiota and Metabolite Profiles in the Feces of Juvenile Sika Deer (Cervus nippon) from Birth to Weaning.

The gut microbiota establishment in young ruminants has a profound impact on their adult production performance. However, the critical phase for the succession of the gut microbial composition and metabolic profiles of juvenile sika deer still needs to be further investigated. Here, we analyzed the fecal microbiota and metabolites of juvenile sika deer during the birth (D1), transition (D42), and rumination (D70) periods based on 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS). The results showed that the fecal bacteria and metabolites composition were s…
