We have examined the control of serum sodium concentration (S-Na) in 60 male infants with acute diarrheal disease, moderate dehydration, but without the presence of fever, vomiting or other conditions. The infants were studied on admission and during oral rehydration therapy (ORT). We examined the effect of rapid reduction of the purging rate on the control of S-Na by adding pulverized rice and pulses (dal moong) to the rehydration solution. Hypernatremic dehydration is described in a case of a breast-fed infant with glucose-galactose malabsorption. Hypernatremic dehydration in general is uncommon in normal breast-fed infants. The finding of hypernatremic dehydration in breast-fed infants with watery diarrhea and sugar in the stool should lead to the consideration of monosaccharide intolerance such as glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Developmental assessment of neonatal hypernatremic dehydration cohort was done at 18-30 mo of age using Developmental Assessment Scale for Indian Infants (DASII) score in relation to brain lesions detected on brain imaging. The air-stable copper(II) catalyst [Cu(mesoFOX-L1)(MeCN)][OTf]2 (2a) is prepared from a fused meso-dipyridylbisoxazolidine (mesoFOX-L1) and CuBr2, followed by treatment with AgOTf. The compound is a catalyst for the dehydration of 1-phenylethanol to styrene (+H2O) in over 95% yield at 1 mol % catalyst loading. Other alcohols (benzylic, tertiary, or allylic) are also efficiently dehydrated by this catalyst. Water separation in toluene solvent is found to play an important role in the reaction. Related compounds with Zn(II) have been prepared and display reduced dehydration activity.
