Efficient nitrogen removal in real aquaculture wastewater by immobilized Pseudomonas fluorescens JSRD-3.

Efficient nitrogen removal from aquaculture wastewater is critical for sustaining aquatic ecosystem sustainability. In this study, a highly efficient heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacterium was isolated from aquaculture sediment. The strain was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens JSRD-3 and evaluated for its nitrogen removal performance. Sodium citrate was determined as the optimal carbon source. Strain JSRD-3 exhibited excellent nitrogen removal across wide ranges of C/N ratio, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, and salinity. With single nitrogen sources, …

Bacterial community succession and functional gene dynamics of nitrogen and phosphorus cycling in recirculating aquaculture systems of shrimp.

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) rely heavily on microbial processes to remove harmful nitrogenous compounds such as ammonia and nitr … ross operational phases. Our results revealed clear temporal patterns in functional gene abundance. Denitrification-related genes (nosZ, napA, nirK/S) became more prominent toward the later stages of operation, while nitrification genes (amoA/B) were most abundant early in the cycle and declined thereafter. Genes involved in ammonification (ureC) and several P-cy …

Mechanistic insights and performance of Mn redox cycling in a dual-bacteria bioreactor for ammonium and Cr(VI) removal.

The co-contamination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and ammonium (NH4+-N) in industrial wastewater has attracted considerable attention due to its serious threats to both ecological systems and public health. Manganese(IV) (Mn(IV))-driven NH4+-N oxidation (Mnammox) coupled with Mn(II)-mediated denitrification (MnOD), built on the Mn redox cycle, is a promising nitrogen removal process, where Mn(II) and NOx--N generated during Mnammox were effectively controlled by MnOD. Herein, a bioreactor integrating Mnammox and MnOD for NH4+-N and Cr(VI) removal was constructed utilizing core-shell gel bea…

Driving mechanism of different nutrient conditions on microbial mediated nitrate reduction in magnetite-present river infiltration zone.

Significant research is focused on the ability of riparian zones to reduce groundwater nitrate contamination. Owing to the extremely high redox activity of nitrate, naturally existing electron donors, such as organic matter and iron minerals, are crucial in facilitating nitrate reduction in the riparian zone. Here, we examined the coexistence of magnetite, an iron mineral, and nitrate, a frequently observed coexisting system in sediments, to investigate nitrate reduction features at various C/N ratios and evaluate the response of microbial communities to these settings. Additionally, we aimed

Integration of ammonium assimilation with denitrifying phosphorus removal for efficient nutrient management in wastewater treatment.

Nutrient removal from sewage is transitioning to nutrient recovery. However, biological treatment technologies to remove and recover nutrients from domestic sewage are still under investigation. This study delved into the integration of ammonium assimilation with denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR) as a method for efficient nutrient management in sewage treatment. Results indicated this approach eliminated over 80 % of the nitrogen in the influent, simultaneously recovering over 60 % of the nitrogen as the activated sludge through ammonia assimilation, and glycerol facilitated this process.

Probing Denitrifying Anaerobic Methane Oxidation via Antimicrobial Intervention: Implications for Innovative Wastewater Management.

Methane emissions present a significant environmental challenge in both natural and engineered aquatic environments. Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (N-DAMO) has the potential for application in wastewater treatment plants. However, our understanding of the N-DAMO process is primarily based on studies conducted on environmental samples or enrichment cultures using metagenomic approaches. To gain deeper insights into N-DAMO, we used antimicrobial compounds to study the function and physiology of 'Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens' and 'Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera' in N-D

Synthesis of acidified magnetic sludge-biochar and its role in ammonium nitrogen removal: Perception on effect and mechanism.

An acidified magnetic sludge-biochar (MSB) was prepared to enhance ammonium nitrogen (AN) removal efficiency in eutrophic water, and MSB was obtained by secondary pyrolysis of sludge biochar powder. A series of MSB were prepared under 300, 400, 500, 600 °C and different valence states of iron ions by impregnation pyrolysis, which is based on the deposition of unstable iron minerals on biochar matrix. Physicochemical properties of pristine biochar and MSB were revealed through characterization analysis, suggesting that MSB prepared by ferric chloride at 400 °C presented the largest adsorption c

The improvement on total nitrogen removal in nitrate reduction by using a prepared CuO-Co3O4/Ti cathode.

In this work, a CuO-Co3O4/Ti composite was prepared via the coating-calcination method and employed as a cathode for the NO3--N reduction to increase the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN). SEM, EDS, and XRD characterization results indicated that CuO and Co3O4 were successfully introduced to the surface of Ti. The CuO-Co3O4/Ti electrode eventually removed NO3--N with the main products of N2, NH4+-N and NO2--N. In comparison to the Co3O4/Ti electrode, the better hydrogen evolution properties of the CuO-Co3O4/Ti electrode resulted in pH increase and NH3 gas release, so the TN removal for

Nitrate levels modulate the abundance of Paracoccus sp. in a biofilm community.

Conditions required to enhance a particular species efficient in degradative capabilities is very useful in wastewater treatment processes. Paracoccus sp. is known to efficiently reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) due to the branched denitrification pathway. Individual-based simulations showed that the relative fitness of Paracoccus sp. to Pseudomonas sp. increased significantly with nitrate levels above 5 mM. Spatial structure of the biofilm showed substantially less nitrite levels in the areas of Paracoccus sp. dominance. The simulation was validated in a laboratory reactor harboring biofilm commu…

Unexpected Room-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3 over Metal-Free Carbon-Based Catalysts.

Catalysts operating at low temperatures are imperative for the denitrification of flue gases from various non-electric industries. Current catalysts typically exhibit significant activity for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) at temperatures above 100 °C. Here, we observed for the first time remarkable room-temperature NH3-SCR activity on the surface of carbon-based catalysts. The oxidation of NO to NO2 by surface C-O-C groups at room temperature serves as a key initial step, triggering a fast SCR reaction. The C-OH groups, as active sites, directly participate in the…

Simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO using a spray dryer absorption (SDA) method combined with O3 oxidation for sintering/pelleting flue gas.

Based on the demand of sintering/pelleting flue gas ultra-low emission, a semi-dry method using a spray dryer absorber (SDA) combined with O3 oxidation was proposed for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO. Effects of O3 injection site, O3/NO molar ratio, and spray tower temperature on the removal efficiencies were investigated. It was revealed that both desulfurization and denitrification efficiencies could reach to 85% under the conditions of setting O3 injection site inside of tower, O3/NO molar ratio 1.8, spray tower temperature 85°C, Ca/(S + 2 N) molar ratio 2.5 and slurry flow rate 300 mL/…

Simultaneous removal of NO and SO2 from flue gas using vaporized H2O2 catalyzed by nanoscale zero-valent iron.

To remove NO and SO2 from flue gas simultaneously, a heterogeneous catalytic oxidation system was developed with the nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), vaporized H2O2, and sodium humate (HA-Na) acting as the catalyst, oxidant, and absorbent, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the desulfurization was mainly influenced by the absorption, and the denitrification was significantly affected by the catalytic oxidation parameters. Under the optimal conditions, the simultaneous removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were 100 and 88.4%, respectively. The presence of ·OH during the remova…

Recent advances in nutrient removal and recovery in biological and bioelectrochemical systems.

Nitrogen and phosphorous are key pollutants in wastewater to be removed and recovered for sustainable development. Traditionally, nitrogen removal is practiced through energy intensive biological nitrification and denitrification entailing a major cost in wastewater treatment. Recent innovations in nitrogen removal aim at reducing energy requirements and recovering ammonium nitrogen. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are promising for recovering ammonium nitrogen from nitrogen rich waste streams (urine, digester liquor, swine liquor, and landfill leachate) profitably. Phosphorus is removed from…

Combined seawater toilet flushing and urine separation for economic phosphorus recovery and nitrogen removal: a laboratory-scale trial.

Freshwater toilet flushing consumes 20-35% of typical household water demand. Seawater toilet flushing, as practised by Hong Kong since 1958, provides an alternative water source. To maximise the benefits of this unique dual water supply, urine separation could be combined to allow low-cost struvite production and subsequent urine nitrification - in-sewer denitrification. This paper reports on a laboratory-scale study of seawater urine phosphate recovery (SUPR) and seawater-urine nitrification. A laboratory-scale SUPR reactor was run under three phases with hydraulic retention time between 1.5…
